FAMED SONGWRITER DIES
Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame member Danny Dill dies at 84 on Thursday, October 23, 2008 at a hospital in Nashville, TN. Danny's birth name is Horace Eldred Dill. A couple of Danny's most memorable tunes are The Long Black Veil and Detroit City. As we remember, The Long Black Veil is a haunting folk medley that tells the sad tale about a murder. Lefty Frizzell takes it to the Top 10 on the Country charts in 1959. We all remember Bobby Bare's Detroit City that rises to #6 on the Country charts in the summer of 1963. It even crosses over to the Pop surveys. A familiar line from the song remains on my mind almost all the time. Songs from Dill's pen feature the voices of legendary recording artists Johnny Cash, Joan Baez, The Band, Kingston Trio, Ray Price, Willie Nelson, Jim Reeves, Eddy Arnold, Carl Smith, Webb Pierce and Faron Young. Danny Dill inducts into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1975.

INTEREP COLLAPSES

As we mention in Monday's JRRR, Interep, one of America's largest radio representation firms sinks and its SOS calls are futile. In recent good times national accounts roll in for its top clients and Interep rides tall in the saddle. But here in 2008 America's economy suddenly falls on tough times. Big national accounts begin to hold back their ad dollars. This of all times is when ads should increase but a potential tsunami rages offshore. Interep begins to lose the firms it represents: Susquehanna, Cumulus, Citadel, Emmis, and Radio One. CBS Radio's 2/3 share of its revenue halts a total cave-in. But several attempts to save Interep fail. Its financier Oaktree Capital with 50% interest tosses $100,000 into the burning fire. Silver Point holds about 40% of Interep. The trio have pow-wows but still no solution arises from the flames. On March 31, 2008 Interep files Chapter 11 protection with no success. Interep goes into Chapter 7 which causes its long list of smaller clients to ponder their future. 300 employees are also at stake. On Monday, October 27th Interep starts its week-long employee lay-offs. The once powerful Interep comes apart at the seams. Rumors suggest that CBS Radio might even form its very own rep company. What this leaves us with is Clear Channel's Katz Media for major radio ad representation. JRRR wants to hear your thoughts about the fall of the Interep empire.

ROCK'N'ROLL TRAIN

One of the late, great British radio legend John Peel’s favorite tunes is Does This Train Stop On Merseyside. John Robert Parker Ravenscroft is born on August 30, 1939. Well, John now has a Rock'n'Roll train with his name on it. The train's official launch is on Thursday, October 23, 2008 at the Liverpool South Parkway station. Liverpool band Amsterdam performs the song in John's honor. Peel’s wife Sheila Ravenscroft is at the ceremony.

MSNBC AND NIELSEN RATINGS SWINGS

Fox News Channel talking head Bill O'Reilly lashes out at Nielsen for what he says are unexplained ratings swings that benefit MSNBC. Bill proclaims, There may be some big time cheating going on in the ratings system. O'Reilly claimes afoul. An examination of Nielsen reveals that their personnel is remarkably liberal. Nielsen Media Research Chairman Susan Whiting and 25 other executives make donations to Democratic campaigns.

DAVE LANE (Atlanta, GA) Your Brother Dave comment reminds me of a Frankie Laine interview I did in '94 or '95 at KQUE when he was visiting at Don's Record Shop and Don had him call me while I was on the air...caught H*** for that and later that year I got a call from Helen Reddy while she was between planes at Bush airport...I didn't put her on the air and she's never spoken to me since! Dave Lane (www.memorylaneoldies.com)

MARCOS RODRIGUEZ (Aspen, CO) howdy! mike was GM of KXOL when i worked there (as i recall, spring 76 to fall 77). he was also employed by KBUY before that and KESS after that. when i worked at kxol chuck brooks and gary stone were in sales. tom was the PD, tony berta was a jock. WHERE DO YOU READ JRRR? Tell us how far away from Houston, TX that you read JRRR. Send your full name, city and state of residence to rosekkkj@earthlink.net.

ROBERT REYES [Bobby] (San Antonio, TX)
Dear Jim...am most appreciative of your getting the info about Fred Weiss in! ...even more sad was the passing of the reporter from Arkansas!! ...will try to get back to you again, but the past few weeks for me have been crazy! ...talk at you again... Bobby R.

BOB CROWLEY (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Subject: My visit to the induction ceremonies. Ya shoulda been there! Dozens of JRRR subscribers were in attendance at Billy-Bob's Texas for the 2008 TRHoF inductions. Both Sammy Allred and Bob Cole made the trip up from Austin. Dave Cooke was decked out, dressed to the nines with a jaunty fedora, and beaming like the Port Isabel lighthouse. Bob Morrison was surrounded by family friends and well-wishers, and looked pretty darn good. Also looking good was the legendary Kent Burkhart. What a charmer! Rowdy Yates pointed out that KIKK (or was it KILT?) had more inductees than any other station. Josh (his real name) was a hoot, and he mentioned many familiar names, including Andy Waldrop. Larry Shannon looked like he was having a good time, but it was his capable assistant, Mike Shannon, who made sure I had a good time. I sat with Mike, John Scott (of WBAP) and Jason Walker, afternoon man on KLIF 570. CC McCartney was sharp as a tack, Michael O'Shea looked to be having the time of his life. All three of the surviving Hicks (Tom, Steve and Bill) accepted the induction for their Dad, John Hicks Jr. Jo Interrante was ravishing. Her daughters and daughter in law were pleasing to the eye as well. Joe Leonard was shown the love and respect a legend should get. All in all, another success. Bob

MIKE SHANNON (Dallas-Mesquite, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#574-34) October 27 2008 [Monday] Hi Jim, Just wanted to let you know that a fixture on the DFW airwaves and in local radio management has passed away. Nancy "Nan" Burns died after a long battle with throat cancer this past week. She was employed by KSKY for many years, and moved to KKGM in 2004, where she's been since. I haven't been able to locate funeral plans or other information, but I'm sure it will be posted on Legacy.com early this week. Thanks, Mike Shannon, Dallas, TX (

TRIVIA ANSWER: Remember Sammy Johns' neat tune Chevy Van in 1975? It hits #5 on Billboard and sells over a half-million copies.

DAVID PERKINS (D/FW, TX) Subject: KBUY reunion. Jimbo and Tejas. I figured Jay Weaver (Joe Fuchs) would email you about this but just in case (he keeps very busy) Jay and his wife Rhonda, my wife Pat and I along with Ron Rice and his wife Jerri from Houston and Bo Powell and his best friend Greta and her 10 year old son Alex got together for a KBUY reunion last Saturday (Oct 18th, 2008) at Riscky's Steak House in the stock yards area in North Fort Worth. Also there was Ron and Jerri's daughter Rhonda who flew over from her husband and family and job in Glasgow, Scotland. We had a great time talking about the past (and the future) of radio and everything else that walked by the restaurant! Ron and I both came to KPRC, Houston to play country music at night. I stayed there 1968-70 before leaving for WBAP, Fort Worth and back to KIKK in Houston and Ron was there 10 years. What's different about today? Well, we talked a lot about our grandchildren. Back then we just talked about how to avoid children! David Perkins (Charlie Brown), The Ecumenical Church for the Followers of Christ, The Jesus Christ Said Ministries (
www.JesusChristSaid.com)

BOB DYLAN (May 24, 1941-p) Well, the future for me is already a thing of the past.
