WE MOVE OUR CLOCKS BACK ONE HOUR ON HALLOWEEN WEEKEND 2008
ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
ELVIS PRESLEY TOPS LIST AGAIN
Among the list of the highest paid celebrities who are no longer with us The King tops the list again. As we well know Elvis Presley passes away at 42 on August 16, 1977 in his Graceland home in Memphis, TN. For me that day lives on in infamy because Elvis is always my favorite singer and entertainer, plus that's the same day I'm on I-10 on my way to Houston as a new DJ on KIKK FM. In 2007 alone he makes $52 million. The visitor flow increases to Elvis' Graceland mansion to mark the 30th anniversary of his death, plus he still sells lots of records, and there's his Sirius Satellite Radio show. He makes more money after his death than some of the world’s biggest living popstars and that even includes Madonna who earns a mere $40 million in 2007. Second on Forbes.com's annual list is Peanuts creator Charles Schultz. He dies in 2000 but earns $33 million between October 2007 and October 2008. Third on the list is actor Heath Ledger who plays The Dark Knight Joker in Batman but dies at only 28 from an accidental prescription drug overdose in January 2008. His earnings estimate is $20 million. All of this just goes to show that even in death Elvis is still The King.

AIN'T THAT THE DICKENS?
Legendary Country music singer and comedian Little Jimmy Dickens celebrates his 60th anniversary with the Grand Ole Opry, When he receives his first invitation to appear on the Opry, the 28 year old Dickens lives in Saginaw, MI: I remember now that when I was going to walk out on that stage, I felt like I was in my first talent show. I looked around and saw all these great people like Mr. Acuff standing around to watch what I was going to do. I really got upset and nervous. I guess what I did was accepted because in a month or two they called me back for another appearance. Jimmy says, I never dreamed I'd be there this long, really. It's hard for me to tell you what's going through my mind, I am so excited about it. During his 60 years on the Opry the 87 year old star performer witnesses a lot of Country music history. He talks of the historic Ryman Auditorium, We were limited on space down there and there were no dressing rooms. Everybody came to work in costumes. It was a wonderful time. We can watch Little Jimmy Dickens' 60th anniversary celebration on the Great American Country cable TV channel's Opry Live at 8 pm on Saturday, November 1, 2008.
PARTRIDGE FAMILY HITS PHILLY
Former child actor on TV's Partridge Family, Danny Bonaduce, finds new success behind radio headphones as a sometimes controversial but highly entertaining morning radio DJ. It all begins over 20 years ago as a sidekick on John Lander’s Nut Hut morning show on WEGX FM (Eagle 106) in Fayetteville-Dillon, SC. Later, Danny soars like an eagle with his very own morning show on some of America's top radio stations. Currently we hear Bonaduce on his one-hour daily radio show on CBS Radio KLSX FM (97.1) in the City of Angels that also is in syndication to other cities. But his latest adventure brings him back to the city of his birth Philadelphia, PA for a celebrity boxing appearance. Michael Klein of the Inquirer reports a quote that Danny makes on October 1, 2008 that if he receives an offer to do the morning show on WYSP he's on the next plane to Philly. We better watch what we wish for because on Wednesday, October 29th a mention in Klein's online column suggests that Bonaduce signs a contract for his new CBS Radio Rock WYSP FM (94.1) morning show to begin on November 10th. And his very anxious and able comrade Shila comes along as his co-host.

DERRILL E. HOLLY (Arlington, VA) Hey Jim, are you aware that Cumulus Radio is hemorrhaging people? The last week or so has been really bloody in markets like Columbia, S.C., Topeka, KS, and Macon GA. Those are just places I've heard from longtime staffers who've been put on the beach because of budget cuts. For many of us who've stayed connected to the business long after we decided to bail on budget watchers who've carried the industry down the syndicated programming, "good-better-best" group ownership route, this is no surprise. But while Cumulus has refused to discuss the reasons why entrenched, involved and engaged voices with at least a decade on the air in some markets are being pushed out the door with no advanced warning and without a chance to even say "See ya" to their listeners, the company is at least offering the general public a chance to listen in on their discussion with shareholders about their budget woes. Of course, even if you can't ask questions, it might be interesting to your observations. Perhaps e-mails to the right business news cites could stimulate good discussion about the dangers of dumbing down the business to a few national voices and local cut-ins for traffic and weather in multiple day parts. The syndicators started with morning drive two decades ago, they've got afternoon drive in some big markets now...can middays really be that far behind. Sad to say, but board operators don't need good pipes, and some of the rising syndicated talent I've heard recently can't even pass the listenability standards many of our friends here had to meet to have a crack at anything besides overnight shifts. Success at stand-up comedy does not necessarily make for good radio...but that's just my opinion. Derrill E. Holly
JIM TRAVIS (Hot Springs, AR) I know you will be overjoyed to know that my PC is now acting like it should. I only wish that I had something important to say but I don't. Be forewarned...Jo can now forward e-mails. (

SHOTGUN COOK [Dwight] (Houston, TX) My wife Karen and I got a chance to go to the Texas Radio Hall of Fame and see my buddy CC McCartney inducted. CC and I used to work together at KRBE back when we were good lookin’. It was my first TRHOF event and required Billy Bob’s Texas in Ft. Worth to fit all the egos under one roof – Larry Shannon and many others pulled off a great event. CC is alive and well – trying to stay out of trouble with CC McCartney Voice imaging. He thinks the deer are bigger in Tennessee but he still has a hankering for Texas. Shotgun Cook

JOHN MCMURRAY (Austin, TX) Subject: unsubscribe me! Y’all are not fair and balanced in your trashing liberals. This is America in case you have not noticed. Our founding fathers set it up so all voices would be heard. The right wing-nuts are trying to kill that idea. I will not be a party to reading or listening to that kind of treasonous talk!
