ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

THE 2009 RADIO BUZZWORD IS CENTRALIZING
We can now forget about the consolidation of the Telcom Act of 1996 and how it changes radio into a conglomerate mess. Let's concerntrate on another new wave to sweep our beloved radio. In 2009, rumors have it that centralizing is the new key-word that affects radio in the good ole USA. Under the consolidation raincoat Clear Channel, the pied piper of Hamlin, transforms 1229 radio stations into one heaping bowl of sameness. Here comes centralizing. Centralizing office duties. Centralizing morning shows. Maybe even centralizing Christmas music. Does the Christmas music come from Santa Claus at the North Pole? Clear Channel Cincinnati, OH is the main server in the soup line. Most of the CC radio stations that switch to all-Christmas music receive their selector databases with pre-programmed logs from CC Cincinnati. Centralizing squeezes all of the ingredients into one small bowl of porridge. How many more talented radio folks end up in the gazpacho line?

NFL IN 3D!

If you live in Boston, Hollywood or NYC in December 2008, NFL action comes your way in 3D for one game. The NFL offers a live feed of the Thursday night match between the San Diego Chargers and the Oakland Raiders in 3D. When we put on our pair of 3D goggles the football players seem to leap right into our faces. According to the NFL, the three-dimensional broadcast experience could create a new home viewing standard for televised sports. The game transmits by 3ality Digital to invited guests at RealD 3D-enabled theaters. Howard Katz, NFL’s SVP of broadcasting and media operations, says The NFL has played an important role in the evolution of media and consumer acceptance of emerging technologies and we’re pleased to work with 3ality Digital and RealD to glimpse into the future. This broadcast will be an exciting test of how 3D could affect fans’ experience in the future. Remember Cinerama in the Sizlin' Sixties? Not too sure if 3D NFL is my cup of tee.

GARY ALLYN (San Diego, CA) Subject: Bill Drake has died. In case you haven't heard: (November 29 - LARadio.com Bulletin) Bill Drake, the architect of the legendary "Boss Radio" format, died this afternoon of lung cancer. He was 71. gare A.

ALAN SHAPIRO (Westlake Village, CA) I knew Frank (Anderson) very well. Frank was an unbelievable guy...he passed away quite a few years ago. I came down to Houston from New York and went to the U of H from 1966-1970. I worked in Houston until 1989 when they transferred me to Dallas and in 1991 was transferred, again, to Burbank. In 1994 I went to work for Giant Records, a division of WB as their GM in Nashville. WEA hired me back in 1998 and moved me back to Ca. I just bought a vacation home on Lake Conroe which I will eventually move to. I remember you at KILT. I was good friends with Bill Young at that time. Alan

FRANK ANDERSON
is the Warner Brothers record promotional person for Dallas-Ft. Worth, TX who becomes a very good friend during my time as Music Director of Top 40 KXOL-1360 from 1975-76. Frank is one of the most knowlegable and professional record promo people that I ever encounter all across Texas. He is a total class act. This news of his death quickly brings tears to my eyes. We just do not encounter people like Frank Anderson anymore.

JOHN HALE (Austin-Cedar Park, TX) Jim, Here's wishes for you to have a happy Thanksgiving. I don't know that this is any reason to be thankful, but I have made note of several things you've run lately on the troubles of corporate radio as it exists today. Several of us over the last couple of years have written about the demise of radio as we knew it, when it was local, and entertaining. I'm not sure that radio can ever really get back to that, and with the hiring of announcers at the local level, but I am sure it won't happen as long as the mega-corporations control most over-the-air radio. I also think an F.C.C. with new, more stringent regulations, is needed. I picked up on an article recently that a lot of teens and twenty-somethings are turning to local radio, such as it is, as an alternative to I-Pods, satellite radio, and M-Tv. Done right, over-the-air radio still offers the huge advantage that it can be local, something that X-M and Sirius can't do. Local radio can entertain and inform between the songs, something I-Pods can't do. As a mobile DJ, I get asked a lot how someone can break into DJ'ing. I don't have a set answer for that, but I'm encouraged that some younger folks still want to get into the business. Perhaps when over-the-air radio is no longer that profitable for the mega-corporations, when it no longer makes economic sense to support satellite broadcasting, when new rules are in place that prohibit the virtual broadcasting monopolies that exist today, local radio will be sold back into the hands that should own it, local ownership. If that does happen, there will be a need for broadcasting professionals that can teach a new generation the ropes. It would be great if some of the true talents that subscribe to this newsletter are among the professionals hired. I'm thankful this year for the newsletter, Jim. You perform a wonderful service in helping to keep alive a time when broadcasting was a primary entertainment in peoples' lives. KASO-1240 in Shreveport-Minden, LA in early 1965 is the first radio station in my long career behind the mic. Ironically, long time radio friend George Lester is behind the mic at the same radio station at a much earlier time when its call letters are KAPK-1240. We radio DJs sometimes receive weird phone calls on the request line. Below is one of George's stories from his time on KAPK.

GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX)
When I first went to work at the Minden radio station i got a call from a women. When I answered she said "Can I speak (to) Lucy May?" I told her she had the wrong number. I waited for her reply but all I heard was muffled voices in the background and breathing. I repeated that she had the wrong number. She repeated, "can I speak to Lucy May?" I could have just hung up but I wanted to see how far it would go. I asked her what number was she trying to dial and she told me. I told her where the mistake was and how she had missdialed. Then the same question came again,"can I speak to Lucy May?" It was getting to be a game with me and I wanted play it out. I asked her to look at the phone dial and she said she was doing it. I then carefully explained to her that when she placed her finger in the dial and twirled it she had accidentally put her finger in the wrong hole and got one of the numbers wrong. "Yessuh, can I speak to Lucy May?" After about ten minutes of this when she asked again to speak to Lucy May I said "Just a minute" and off phone shouted "Lucy May, someone wants to talk to you" I waited a few seconds and said "I'm sorry, she said she doesn't want to talk to you" and hung up.
