ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
U.S. GOVERNMENT ADMITS WE HAVE A RECESSION
Some tell-tale signs of a recession include things like Viacom with 3rd Q revenue down 37% freezes salaries, sends 850 (7%) employees on their way home to save $200 million to $250 million in 2009. NBCU makes major cuts with up to 500 jobs (3%) gone. TV Newser. L.A. correspondent John Larso says this affects NBC News bureaus in Dallas, TX and Los Angeles, CA. Chicago Tribune gives 12 Newsroom employees the rest of the week to clean out their desks, more cuts on the way. Cox Television president retires. Cox Target Media's CEO resigns. Atlanta, GA-based media company Cox Newspapers shutter Washington, D.C. news bureau on April 1, 2009. After the Cox national bureau shutters, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and Dayton Daily News manage their own Washington, D.C. and international news bureaus independently with dedicated correspondents. In August 2009, Cox plans to sell several of its newspapers in TX, NC and CO. The Virginia Symphony Orchestra with a $1.5 million debt load cuts the 27 full- and part-time administrative and artistic staff members' salaries by 20% effective January 1, 2009 and cancels some of its spring concerts. The Virginia Symphony gives its 5,000 subscribers other options. It is the region’s top orchestra that performs in halls throughout the area. Good news! They do not reduce the symphony’s 79 musicians' pay.

LET'S HAVE A PARTY!
Legendary 1960s Rock group The Doors throw a party at West Hollywood biker bar Barney’s Beanery on Monday, December 8, 2008 to celebrate its lead singer/songwriter Jim Morrison's 65th birthday. Since it moves from Berkeley, CA in 1927 to its current location on Santa Monica Boulevard the historic saloon hosts a wide variety of counter cultural events from avant-garde art, movies, literature to Rock and Roll. Surviving Doors members Ray Manzarek and Robbie Kreiger appear that evening for a special live broadcast on L.A.'s Classic Rock KLOS FM (95.5) with its famous host Last D.J. Jim Ladd's night show. They talk about and sign copies of their CD Live at The Matrix 1967 on The Doors’ Bright Midnight Archives and Rhino Records. The two-CD set is from two nights in San Francisco in March ’67. This is the 4th album in the Bright Midnight archives. In the 1960s Rock icon Jim Morrison hangs out with Janis Joplin at Barney’s Beanery. David Houston, who buys Barney’s in 1999 from Erwin Held, says We decided to celebrate this occasion because Barney’s is a place where Jim Morrison hung out often. Whatever point in time you go back to, whoever was making history in pop culture, they seemed to have a foot in the Beanery.

LEN HART (Geneva, Switzerland) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio Issue #538 Your mention of Chris Collier of KIKK brings back lots of memories. I must confess --I played a roll in getting Chris into radio. I was trying to stay in college back in the late sixties by working three FM stations in Odessa-Midland --a small FM station in Odessa, the more powerful KNFM in Midland, and 'student station manager' for KOCV-FM, a 5000 watt educational station at Odessa College. I met Chris at KOCV and recommend he interview for KNFM. The rest is history. I was working in the Houston market (KILT) when Chris came to Houston. I recall that he arrived in Houston with a case of Coors beer. In those days, Coors was unavailable in Houston. Does anyone know how to get a message to Chris?

JOE PESCE (Ventura, CA) Mr. Rose- I discovered your web site via Google. I have been given a Trans-oceanic by my aunt that is in wonderful condition—a 3000-1—probably late 1960s vintage? These radios have always fascinated me and I am thrilled to have it. She lives in Palm Desert, so the radio has no rust or corrosion of any sort, though the black vinyl sides are "curled" up and pulled away from the metal case. I cleaned it up last night and used a little metal polish to shine it up, then I put in some new batteries. Fortunately, there were no old batteries in it, so no corrosive issues that I’m aware of. Now for the puzzling news. I turned it on and all’s good except the volume is VERY low. Even with it turned all the way up, I can barely hear it. I also notice that there’s quite a bit of noise—at a higher volume—when I switch between bands. I live in the Ventura area and wonder if you can refer me to someone that might not be too far from me for some repair/restoration advice? I noticed in the info shown on the Google search results the name Carl Warren as someone who repaired a Trans-oceanic for you? Perhaps he’s located in the LA or valley area? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. -- Joe Pesce
DAN MCCURDY (Sherman, TX) Jim...believe me, I'm aware of the challenges facing a writer/editor of newsletters and printed ilk...I've been there, done that, and certainly empathize with the daily/weekly rigors of your efforts. I just appreciate the dedication and work you undertake to keep all of us on top of 'what's happening' broadcast-wise and in touch with our fellow 'radio-heads,' plus, allowing us to share our memories, ideas and comments... My very best to you, Jim... Dan McCurdy, Sherman, TX, Texas Radio Hall of Fame inductee 2004, KLIF, KBOX-Dallas, WMEX-Boston
JAY WEAVER (D/FW-Hurst, TX) Jim, not trying to make you look bad, but I remember Regis Philbin as the announcer/sidekick on the old Joey Bishop late night show on ABC back when ABC was trying to get something together to compete with The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and his announcer/sidekick Ed McMahon. Actually that probably makes me look bad because I remember that show very well and ... gulp, that probably means I'm older than you! I remember that Regis had a resume at that time that consisted of radio work on a couple of New York City radio stations. Jay
BOB CROWLEY (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Jim; I picked up a copy of "An Epic Life: Willie Nelson", the latest from Joe Nick Patoski. I highly reccomend it. I ready Susie's book and Willie's book, and thought I knew everything about the man, but Joe Nick goes way beyond, with many names and places. I am getting a real thrill from the description of Willie's radio career, in Fort Worth, Pleasanton, Houston and Vancouver Washington. I see familiar names, such as Groovy Joe Poovey, Biff Collie, Arlie Duff and many more. I'm also impressed with the struggle involved in getting his music published, recorded and performed. I highly reccomend it. Bob
WILLIE NELSON arrives in Nashville, TN in the 1960s and finds a job as a songwriter at a music publishing firm. Hear a story one time that they place him in an empty room and tell him to write a song. Out comes the classic tune, Hello Walls.
BOB GRANT [Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) Thought you would like to know the U.S. Postal Service will commemorate entertainer Bob Hope with a First Class stamp next spring in recognition of his work with the U.S. Armed Forces. Although Hope never officially served in the military, he was heavily involved throughout his life entertaining US service personnel from 1941 through Operation Desert Storm. Hope died at his home on 7/27/03 just two months after his 100th birthday. (I was fortunate to have met him 4 or 5 times & once interviewed him on radio & TV live from Tampa airport, along with singer Molly Bee and the late Jerry Colonna (1904-1986) all at the same time! I still treasure Hope's personal autograph. Col. Robert Hanger
