RADIO LEGEND LEAVES THE BUILDING
Is Arbitron's new PPM listener measurement system in Chicago, IL the blame for a radio legend's ratings to drop or is it all of the latest technology? For a good while legendary radio talent Steve Dahl is PM Drive host on CBS Radio Talk WCKG FM
(105.9) Chicago-Elmwood Park, IL. But in November 2007 CBS Radio flips the Talk format over to Hot AC with new call letters WCFS FM and Holiday (Christmas) music. So Steve moves to AM Drive on CBS Adult Hits WJMK FM (Jack FM - Playing What We Want 104.3). When the Chicago radio market switches to Arbitron's new PPM measurement system Dahl's ratings suffer a huge loss in audience share points. Todd Cavanah WJMK PD tells R&R that it's sad that it doesn't work out with Steve. Todd says that Dahl is a real pleasure to work with and one of, if not the, hardest working radio hosts with whom he ever works. Steve moved around a lot over the years. Some people probably had a hard time finding him. People are busy. They don't live radio the way we do. Cavanah also mentions new technology as a possible factor. A lot of Steve's fans are high-tech. We got a lot of notes from people who listened to his podcast, at their convenience, rather than he was on air in the morning. Todd does say that he might bring Steve back in an Internet-based format. The Chicago Tribune estimates that Steve Dahl's salary is over $1 million per year.

THERE'S FAITH IN A NEW FRAGRANCE

Coty and Country Superstar Faith Hill get together to develop and debut her own fragrance for 2009. This is Faith’s first time to have a perfume fragrance all her own. Coty tells us that it will capture Hill’s natural beauty, warmth and strength. Hill remarks I had no idea of how exciting and creative it would be to work not only with a great company like Coty, but with some of the leading perfumers in the world. In one respect, putting out a fragrance is like releasing a new album you just hope that everyone will enjoy it. Faith Hill's new fragrance goes on sale just in time for Christmas 2009. Does this qualify for a new category in the already full 110 Grammy Awards categories?

TOM ELLIS (Boston-Newton, MA) Hi, Jim, After almost 15 years here at NEW ENGLAND CABLE NEWS I'm leaving the building. Sad to say that due to the "economic circumstances" of my employer, my weekend anchor gig here will be over on 12/27/08. After having begun in television in Fort Worth, Texas as an 18 year old in 1951, I've had a remarkable run in some fantastic markets. So, I can certainly say without regret that I've had my turn, and I'll have to find a new horse to ride. I'll be signing off on this email site on that late December date, and I'll let you know soon where you can continue to reach me with JRRR. Meanwhile, give em H***, JR. Here's to health, wealth and happiness, Tom Ellis (www.necn.com/

BRUCE ELROD [President, Cash Box] (Ridgeway, SC) Jim, Beach music dj Fessa John Hook is now in charge of all Cashbox Radio Countdown shows. Check it out. Bruce Elrod (www.Cashboxradio.com/) / (www.cashboxmagazine.com/)

GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX)
Hello Jim, I emailed Jim Travis and thanked him for his kind words. So far I haven't received a reply. The email address must have been correct because it didn't bounce. If he contacts you again please pass my thanks along to him. I think I told you that I have recording equipment at my home here in Elkhart. I do most of my music tracks with computer software programs and even do my own backup singers. I have produced several CDs for myself and others. I also record radio spots and send them in MP3 format by email to the stations. From what I read in your website that's about as close to radio as I want to get anymore. By the way, I appreciate your posting my little bits in your column. It gave this octogenarian a thrill. Thanks, George Lester

DAVID PERKINS (D/FW, TX) Jimbo and Tejas. I figured Jay Weaver (Joe Fuchs) would email you about this but just in case (he keeps very busy) Jay and his wife Rhonda, my wife Pat and I along with Ron Rice and his wife Jerri from Houston and Bo Powell and his best friend Greta and her 10 year old son Alex got together for a KBUY reunion last Saturday (Oct 18th, 2008) at Riscky's Steak House in the stock yards area in North Fort Worth. Also there was Ron and Jerri's daughter Rhonda who flew over from her husband and family and job in Glasgow, Scotland. We had a great time talking about the past (and the future) of radio and everything else that walked by the restaurant! Ron and I both came to KPRC, Houston to play country music at night. I stayed there 1968-70 before leaving for WBAP, Fort Worth and back to KIKK in Houston and Ron was there 10 years. What's different about today? Well, we talked a lot about our grandchildren. Back then we just talked about how to avoid children! David Perkins, The Ecumenical Church for the Followers of Christ, The Jesus Christ Said Ministries (www.jesuschristsaid.com/)

JAY WEAVER (D/FW-Hurst, TX) Jim - I have had this sign hanging in my garage for close to 20 years. I found it at a Goodwill store in Fort Worth on East Belknap Street. I cleaned it up and added the "Jay Weaver - Weekends on KPCN". Thought you might enjoy seeing it. Do you remember it hanging anywhere at KPCN when you were there? Jay
