ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
JAY REMAINS ON NBC TV
As we mention in an earlier issue of JRRR, the longtime host of The Tonight Show Jay Leno leaves the show on May 29, 2009. Breaking news! To prevent Jay's departure to another network that rumors suggest are ABC TV in 2010, NBC TV invents a brand new prime time weeknight show at 10 pm for Leno to host. As a sort of insurance policy just in case Jay's Tonight Show replacement Conan O’Brien stumbles in the ratings, NBC TV still has its star Jay Leno on its staff. An industry executive says, If Conan does fail miserably, it opens up Jay to come back (at 11:30). If I was Conan, I’d be furious. But maybe he kicks b*** at 10 and doesn’t want to come back. Don't touch that bat dial.

DALLAS HAS A NEW FAN
On Monday, December 8, 2008 at 3 pm CT CBS Radio Talk KLLI FM (105.3) Dallas, TX transforms into All-Sports 105.3 The Fan. KLLI Morning Host Jagger continues his spot but midday hosts Ben & Skin move to PM Drive at 3 to 7 pm. They replace longtime Dallas radio host Russ Martin who hits the news headlines in early 2008 when cops arrest him on misdemeanor charges because, according to news reports, he has an argument with his girlfriend. A glance at the new Web site (www.1053thefan.com) indicates that Russ is not on the new schedule. The Web site has a beautiful picture of the new Dallas Cowboys stadium that is under construction. It too has an open roof but this one opens and closes.

LEE BABY SIMS (Walnut Creek, CA) Dear Jim...I see that Tom Ellis has retired from the fray. My goodness, My Friend ...Time is taking us on isn`t it? Tom and I worked together, decades ago at KONO in Old San Antonio. Back in 65. I was the Jock, Tom was the Newsman. I remember seeing him through the glass and thinking, What a good looking guy, What a great voice, What a great delivery. What Is he doing here In little ole` San Antone... He should be in the Big Time. Well, I'll be a s*******... I was right... It did not take him long... And he was there for a long time... I don`t know how he put up with those cold cold New England Winters, After Iced Tea and Enchiladas sitting there in the shade along the The River Walk...In Ole` San Antone... Please tell him I said...Tom... Lee...
TOM ELLIS (Boston-Newton, MA) One other bit, Jim. Just in case anyone's interested, you can Google Tom Ellis, Journalist, and there's my life as a broadcaster revealed, along with a lot of other junk which came from out of nowhere near the truth. It has indeed been an interesting life. Tom (

JOAN PATE-DAY (Cedar Creek Lake,TX) Subject: SAM PATE. Thought you would like an update on Sam. Things can't get much worse. He was rushed to the hospital by ambulance Thursday night. He could not move or walk. Janet says it was hard to get him transported. Sam talks like all is well, but he keeps saying things that do not make sense. The strange thing is, he remembers his radio days and you guys. Like it happened yesterday. Janet brought him home from the hospital today but he will have to go back tomorrow for awhile. Not much the staff can do for him. At this time he can not walk. It hurts me to write these things but I promised I would keep you informed. I talked to him shortly and by his voice no one would think he is even ill. His daughter Debra went to see him today and said he looks as if he has aged ten years in the past six months. He weighs 172 pounds.
FR. BOB TOMLINSON (D/FW-Hurst, TX) Say Jim, tell Jay Weaver someone else remembers the old Joey Bishop show and Regis being on it. Not sure how long that show lasted but Regis wasn't hurt too bad by it I guess. Jay you and I are in the same area, how about coffee sometime? Jim I agree with others, you do a great service here and I'm glad to be a small part of it as a reader. Bob Tomlinson FTW, Hurst
GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX) Yes, what is happening to the Opry and country music in general makes me sick. I watched the CMA awards and, once again, 75 percent of it didn't sound vaguely like country to me. I'm not a purist to the extent that I don't want backup singers, strings or drums but I would like to be able to tell it is country without seeing a label on it. Some times I wish all the "real" country singers would revolt and start a movement to bring the country back to country. Like George Jones said in his song, "There Was Murder on Country Row".
DAN MCCURDY (Sherman, TX) Hey, Jim...fair and balanced is where it's at for the really good blogs like JRRR...I just pray the Democrap gummint doesn't require the resurrection of the "UNfair and UNbalanced" UNfairness Doctrine in our beloved broadcast industry...Printing the leftist comments will keep the socialists from accusing you of only printing conservatives' missives...My best to you, my friend...Dan McCurdy, Texas Radio Hall of Fame inductee 2004, KLIF, KBOX-Dallas, WMEX-Boston
TRIVIA ANSWER: Elvis Costello is born Declan Patrick MacManus on August 25, 1954 in St Mary's Hospital, Paddington in London, England. In 1976, Jake Riviera, his manager at independent label Stiff records, suggests a name change. They combine Elvis Presley's first name with his mother's maiden name Costello to come up with Elvis Costello. To coincide with the 1983 UK general election Elvis Costello releases his UK hit Pills And Soap under the name The Imposter to attack changes in British society by Thatcherism. In 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine's 100 Greatest Artists of All Time ranks Elvis Costello at #80. Rolling Stone Magazine ranks the real Elvis that we know and love by the last name of Presley at #3 on its 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. They rank Bob Dylan at #2 and The Beatles at #1. But we all know The King, Elvis Presley is always #1.
BOB GRANT (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) I am fortunate to have met most on your list: I have brought Hank Jr on stage in Charlotteville, Alexandria & Culpeper, VA shows many times. I was fortunate to meet his Dad on the Hadacol Caravan show in Huntington,W VA, Sept, 1950 & his mother in Nashville. When young, Hank was a rounder even more so than his Dad. Others you named I brought on stage as M/C include: Never worked a show with C. Pride, but was present in Nashville when RCA introduced him to the world (and the ahhhhs went forth..& he was always at later conv there. He has had only one wife, Rozene & they still live in Ft. Worth; he was back on the Opry last month. First time I saw J>Cash was in 1956 at Verona Ranch show in northern KY...many times at DJ convention. I even remember his first wife, Vivian, whom he met in San Antonio (1934-2005) I never presented him on stage, but also saw him perform in Tampa, Richmond & Staunton, VA June Carter was a comedian on Opry when I first saw her, but later many times at Conv, plus shows above with Cash All the Carter family is now gone & I have dates for all of them. I have a long list of acts at Univ. VA where I was M/C. BOB
DENNIS MILLER (November 3, 1953-p) Santa is very jolly because he knows where all the bad girls live.
