MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM TEJAS AND JIM!

ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

CLASSICS IV DEPARTS

On Sunday, December 7, 2008 Dennis Yost, lead singer of Soft Rock group the Classics IV, dies at 65 of respiratory failure at Fort Hamilton Hospital in Hamilton, OH which is about 30 miles northwest of Cincinnati. We fondly remember these Classics IV hits: Spooky (#3-1968), Stormy (#5-1968) and Traces of Love (#2-1969). Many Memory Makers too numerous to mention. Bill Lowery, founder of Lowery Music Inc., and Buddy Buie in Atlanta, GA are the producers of The Classics IV hit recordings. Buie, who along with Classics IV guitarist, J.R. Cobb co-writes their songs, remembers: Dennis had an incredible voice — just a great voice for love songs. The 67-year-old Buie who retires to Eufaula, AL adds: I am deeply saddened by his passing. 65 year-old Cobb says he and Yost grow up in Jacksonville, FL and ride motorcycles together before they form the Classics IV. J.R., who later plays guitar with the Atlanta Rhythm Section and the Highwaymen (Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson & Willie Nelson), lives in retirement in Monticello, GA. Dennis continues to perform with the Classics IV until 2005 when he falls down a flight of stairs at his home and suffers serious brain trauma. Jon Bowzer Bauman, singer with Rock group Sha Na Na, holds a benefit concert in 2008 to help with Dennis Yost’s increasing medical costs. Yost undergoes much rehabilitation in nursing homes but never is able to perform again. Dennis Yost leaves behind his wife, Linda Yost, of suburban Hamilton and five children. JRRR sends out our prayers to the Yost family.

CLEAR CHANNEL AND CBS EXCHANGE FREQUENCIES

The rumors they are a flyin' about what Clear Channel Radio does to solve its problem with the DOJ. On Monday morning, December 15, 2008 CBS Radio announces an agreement with Clear Channel Radio to swap 5 mid-size market stations for 2 large market stations. This swap meet involves 7 radio stations in five-markets. The tight economy forces a no-cash swap. CBS trades 5 FMs in 4 markets to CCR: CHR KBKS FM (106.1) Seattle, WA; Classic Hits WQSR FM (Jack 102.7) Baltimore, MD; Rhythmic KXJM FM (107.5) and Classic Hits KLTH FM (106.7) Portland, OR and KQJK FM (Jack 93.7) Sacramento, CA. CCR retains ownership of their 6 Houston radio stations: Talk KTRH-740, Sports KBME-790, Talk KPRC-950, KKRW FM (93.7), KTBZ FM (94.5) and KODA FM (99.1). In return CBS receives from CCR: Hot AC KHMX FM (Mix 96.5) and KLOL FM (Mega 101.1) both here in Houston, TX. These 2 FMs add to what CBS Radio already has here in Houston: Country KILT FM (100.3), Sports KILT-610, Talk KIKK-650 and Hot Hits KKHH FM (95.7). This now clears CCR with the DOJ for Clear Channel Radio to go private. Dan Mason, CBS Radio President/CEO, says We are thrilled to be adding them to our portfolio and believe they will nicely complement our four existing stations.

And he told me that he manages a singer, Max Reedes (or Reeds), son of Jack Reeds (or Reedes). You might know of them. Merry Christmas. Wayne Warner

TRIVIA ANSWER: Irving Berlin writes White Christmas in early 1940 as he sits poolside at the Arizona Biltmore Resort and Spa in Phoenix, AZ. Bing Crosby introduces White Christmas in the 1942 musical Holiday Inn. 1950s Doo-Wop group The Drifters record White Christmas in November 1953. It zooms to #2 on the R&B chart in 1954. The great doo-Wop tune finally makes it over to the Billboard Pop chart during Christmas 1955. As a 12 year old teeny-bopper I fall in love with the Drifters' version of White Christmas the very first time that I ever hear it that Christmas in 1955 on The Mighty KLIF-1190 in my hometown Dallas, TX. Over the years the Drifters have many members who drift away but we remember Clyde McPhatter as the tenor voice on White Christmas and the marvelous deep bass man is Bill Pinkney. Let's go back to the Fabulous Fifties for that great tune:

JAY WEAVER (D/FW, TX)
Hi Jim - This version of "White Christmas" is no doubt one of the greatest versions of the song ever recorded, although not many folks have ever heard it. It always brings to mind my old friend, Ken "Hubcap" Carter, may his soul rest in peace. I was listing to him one Saturday night on KAAM, here in D/FW, several years back on a warm August night and he played this version of "White Christmas". He was ask by his broadcast partner why he played it afterwards, and he said, "I was just in the mood to hear some great 'doo-wap!'" Enough said! Jay Weaver (D/FW) MERRY CHRISTMAS, JIM, TO YOU AND ALL YOUR LOYAL READERS!!

WILLIAM E. (Bill) VAUGHAN aka Burton Hillis (October 8, 1915–February 25, 1977) The best of all gifts around any Christmas tree: the presence of a happy family all wrapped up in each other.
