MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM TEJAS AND JIM!
ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
CBS RADIO MAKES CHANGES IN CHI-TOWN
Here's news of the latest CBS Radio shakeup in Chicago-land. On Friday, December 12, 2008 a tsnumai hits Chicago radio. Rod Zimmerman SVP/Market Manager announces a realignment in management. Dan Richman 17-year GSM leaves WXRT FM (93.1) and WSCR-670 (The Score). Paul Agase moves backwards from GM at Adult Alternative WXRT FM and WSCR-670 to GSM at the The Score. WSCR and WXRT report directly to Zimmerman who already manages all-news WBBM-780. Rod hands over the GM title at WBBM FM (B96) and WJMK FM (Jack 104.3) to Peter Bowen, who still is DOS for the cluster. Still up in the air is if Peter latches onto the GM nomenclature at B96 and Jack. But Rod does say that Dave Robbins continues oversight of WUSN FM (Country US99.5) and Fresh (WWFS FM 105.9) while leading the programming efforts of all seven stations. Got that?

POPULAR ACTOR BIDS FAREWELL
As we mention in JRRR sometime back, actor and sometime singer Patrick Swayze receives a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer in January 2008 but he carries on with his acting career. We remember Patrick from his great roles in Red Dawn,The Ghost and other wonderful movies. Swayze undergoes chemotherapy but doctors cannot rid his body of the cancer and it spreads to his liver. But like a Timex watch the 56-year old Patrick Swayze keeps on ticking with his movie career. In 2008 he shoots his part in the upcoming TV show The Beast. Generally speaking, the prognosis for liver cancer is poor. Primary liver cancer hardly responds to treatment. Doctors do perform therapy for Patrick's cancer at the Stanford Medical Center in California. But in recent weeks Swayze's condition intensifies. Patrick Swayze now bids farewell to his family and friends.
PROSTATE SURGERY
On Friday, December 19, 2008 I go back to the urologist for possible removal of a catheter after almost two weeks. The doctor originally says that surgery is necessary but I do not want that to happen. He adds another medication to see if it helps but the pain only worsens to a horrendous condition. Can barely make it from one day to the next with this tremendous agony of defeat. Plus, the old car remains inoperable for 5 months which leaves me with no transportation. All of this is quite depressing to say the least and makes everything extremely difficult but I must carry on. JRRR goes out as usual but under immense pressure. So if I do go in for surgery, JRRR goes into a holding pattern. How much time in the hospital does it take for prostate surgery? What do I do about my precious Tejas? Please pray that the enormous pain goes away and everything flows freely again. See you on the other side of the river Jordan.

WAYNE GRAHAM (Niles, MI) Hi Jim, I asked you some time ago if you had any info. on Larry Glick an all night Dj I use to listen to out of WBZ Boston and you were kind enough to give me what you had, tonight while going through some old tapes I had taken off the radio 30 years or more ago I found the one and only old cassette tape that I thought had been destroyed and Larry is interviewing a guy who still made and sold "SNAKE OIL" like the old medicine shows and of course crazy people are calling in to the show. Well Just thought I would pass this on because it sure brings back memories of when I was a kid here in Michigan and on a clear night during a Michigan summer while the other kids were asleep I was listening to Larry Glick. God's Best to you, your friend from One on One Syndicated radio Wayne Graham PS Our new web site is (

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#596-31) December 17, 2008 [Wednesday]. RE:your JRRR#596, 12/17; You certainly bring back memories often. Bill Lowery of Atlanta (producer/booker of Classics 1V) was a good friend indeed. He always attended annual DJ Conv in Nashville. He was the youngest A-M radio station MGR in a major market in the nation at age 21 (Atlanta) & later became a music publisher, record producer & head of his own talent booking agency. I personally booked recording artists such as Johnny Tillotson, Kris Jensen, Billy Joe Royal, The Tams & Tommy Roe from his office. Lowery became a legend in Atlanta music circles; sadly Bill Lowery died on June 8, 2004. You were also a fan (as I) of The Drifters & I had the opportunity to bring them on stage on several dates; sadly the last surviving member of original Drifters, Bill Pinkney, died on July 4, 2007 @ 81 in his hotel room at Daytona Beach. Your newsletters alway renew memories of that golden era in broadcasting for me & many others. Col. Robert Hanger
THE DRIFTERS' Classic White Christmas that they record in 1954 becomes a #2 R&B hit. It lands on Billboard's Pop chart during Christmas 1955. Have a copy of that 45 rpm record with its picture sleeve of The Drifters in my Oldies collection. (http://heavens-gates.com/50s/whitechristmas/)
GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX) Hi Jim, I have been enjoying reading about the old gang from San Antoio radio and TV. I'm glad to know so many are still among the living. Maybe one of your readers can help me. In 1966 and 1967 when I worked a KBAT in San Antonio my best friend was a deejay named Tom Kelly (his real name). He did the seven to midnight shift and had a sidekick he called "The Count". He was an in the airforce while he worked for KBAT and when he was discharged he went back to his home state of Ohio. That is where the trail ended for me. After Googling my fingers off I have drawn a blank trying to find his whereabouts. Tom Kelly was a true friend in need and in deed. It would mean a great deal to me if anyone can tell me where he is now. Thanks, George

WOODY ROBERTS (San Antonio, TX) Hi, Jim, Long, long ago a Christmas card from Elvis and the Colonel said it well: "Have a cool Yule and a Friendly 1st!" --Ho, Ho, Ho, and best in '09, Woody
TRIVIA ANSWER: In the 1970s 3 members of Rock band Led Zeppelin have wives - Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham. Out of all four Led Zeppelin muscians Jimmy Page is the only one who is single during the 1970s.
MIKE HARTMAN (Ft. Worth-Joshua, TX) Jim, As you know, from some of my e-mails, I'm a singer. So, this year my gift to my friends is going to be...me...me singing, that is. The song is called "Joseph's Song"...Joseph is asking God, "How Can A Man Be Father To The Son Of God?" I sang this song at the Rodeo City Music Hall, in Mesquite, TX, back in December of 2004. I make it a point to close my shows, during the Christmas season, with this song. The original version was recorded back in the 80's by the man who wrote it...Michael Card. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and Tejas. Jesus is the reason for the season. Mike
ST. LUKE 10-12 And the angel said unto them, Fear not! For, behold, I bring you tidings of great joy, Which shall be to all people. "For unto you is born this day in the city of David A Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you: Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, Lying in a manger.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!
