MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM TEJAS AND JIM!

ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

STERN RETURNS TO LAND?
In January 2006 controversal talk show host Howard Stern makes the jump from CBS terrestrial radio to Sirius Satellite Radio. After Stern leaves CBS they sue him. On Stern's radio show he calls satellite radio the next big thing, On CNNMoney.com he says that commercial radio is no longer a safe haven for shock jocks like him. Howard says The Super Bowl did us in. Remember the infamous half-time show when Janet Jackson exposes her breast in a live performance? Viacom-CBS receives a fine for $550,000. In 2008 Sirius and XM satellite radio merge and become Sirius XM. Recently Howard Stern makes a return engagement to terrestrial radio in a 90 second commercial for Sirius XM that airs on terrestrial radio: Hey. This is Howard Stern. I know you thought you’d never hear me again on regular radio, but I haven’t forgotten about you and I hope you will join me over here at Sirius XM... Entercom's David Field and others say they will never accept radio spots for Sirius or XM. The times they are a changin'. With the present economy advertisers make major cuts in their budgets. So, all of a sudden Howard Stern's radio ads are welcome on terrestrial radio. Howard brags I’m finally uncensored, nobody bleeps me here. He boasts the show has never been better.

CBS DEALS TRIO TO WILKS

On Monday morning, December 22, 2008 CBS Radio announces that it agrees to sell three FM radio stations in Denver, CO to Wilks Broadcasting for $19.5 million in cash. In the deal Jeff Wilks takes control of Country KWLI FM (Wolf 92.5), AC KIMN FM (Mix 100) and Classic Hits KXKL FM (Kool 105.). Jeff says Denver is the market where I started my career, and I’m excited to come back and operate these three leading stations. DAVE LEWIS (Harrisburg, PA) ...(19)69-70 while in the army I was stationed in Ft Hood...I heard what was to me the very best AM rock station of all time, the Big T--KTSA in San Antonio. I remember all the jocks that were there at the time and their air shifts. I have had some correspondence by email with Tim Kelly and a couple of phone chats with Barry Kaye by the way. I wound up getting air checks from some of the guys in that time period, but I remember Ron Houston the morning jock and couldn't find a copy of any of his. Doing an internet search on him and all the sites it takes you to, I got Liz's email and chatted with her about two years ago. I was looking for anything from KTSA and Ron...she sent me a photo from that year (2006) of a DJ reunion and she also told me about your site and that is how I signed up. I enjoy the issues and look forward on receiving them. Hope you have a great day too! Dave

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX)
Noted your mention of birthdate for Dave Matthews in 12/15 issue JRRR. Prior ro his prominence in music-biz, I remember Dave Matthews when he was a bartender in a pub on the downtown mall in Charlottesville, VA. He now sports hit albums on RCA, successful tours, movie soundtracks & is a board member of "Farm-Aid," where his group appeared again this past Sept. Matthews owns a farm near Scottsville, VA & is father of twin girls and a young son. Col. Robert Hanger.

DAN MCCURDY (Sherman, TX) Hey, Jim...in response to Wayne Graham's question about Larry Glick (JRRR #597-46, December 19, 2008)...Larry was doing his overnight 'talk shtick' on Boston's WMEX-AM (1510) in the summer of 1965 while I was pulling the morning drive show 5:30-9:00 a.m. ...a heckuva nice guy, we used to talk radio, politics, the Red Sox and the Boston scene as I was taking over the mic for my 'Emperor Fenway' early morning gig on WMEX...I lasted only 4 months working for the most contemptible radio person I have ever had the displeasure to meet, Maxwell Richmond (who also owned WPGC-AM, a Washington D.C. area station)...look under 'b*st*rd' in the dictionary, and you'll find a framed photo of Max Richmond. He was, arguably, the clear Boston embodiment of The Grinch. But on a much more pleasant note, Larry Glick, in 1969, wisely made the move to WBZ's blowtorch 50,000 watt signal, compared to WMEX's 5,000 watts; he did his nighttime talk show at WBZ (1030) and handed the mic over daily to longtime morning mogul Carl DeSuze (who celebrated his 20th year with WBZ in 1961.) Larry is alive (as of March 18, 2008) 86 years young, and is doing well in Boca Raton, FL. The link below will take 'Glick Shtick' fans to an article published in the Boca Raton News about Larry and his new life and 27-year younger wife in The Sunshine State. My best to you, prayers and healing thoughts for your acute pain and possible surgery, and a Merry Christmas 2008 and Happy New Year 2009 to you, Tejas and all of your many readers. GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX) Hi Jim, Tom Kelly was his real name and that is all he every used to my knowledge. I Googled up his name and there were a lot of them named Tom Kelly but none I found was the one I was looking for. I was hoping one of your readers might know him from his history at KBAT. He was an Airman from Lackland AFB and we played at their golf course many times. I was about an 8 handicapper and he was a scratch player but he tolerated me anyway. He was single so he spent a lot of time at our house visiting. I think he was homesick being so far away from Ohio. I had just returned from Akron and darn glad to be back in Texas so I could relate. He would be in his early sixties I believe. If you run my request I hope someone will know about him. Thanks, George

ARCH & JANET YANCEY (Houston-Alvin, TX) Yes, we live in Alvin. We are hotshot drivers for Bright Delivery Service out of Pasadena, TX. Arch retired from being on-air in 1989. He was in sales until Clear Channel bought out the station he was with and then they let everyone go. Sound familiar? He then worked for Walt Hammock for a few years and suddenly Arch decided he wanted to be a truck driver. I was a teacher's aide in special aide working on teaching certificate. Believe it or not, this pays more than teaching! So I bought a truck and do this too! We are seeing Texas a little at a time! Good luck with your surgery. We shall pray for you tonight and again tomorrow. Arch and Jan

BILLY THORMAN (Ft. Worth, TX) Hello, Jim. Just a note to wish you a Merry Christmas, a great 12 months next Year and that everything goes well with the doctor. Everyone can use a prayer. Let me know what you like prayed for and I will pass it along to strong Prayer group I happen to know. All the best! Billy t

TRIVIA ANSWER: John Peterson originally plays drums for Rock group the Beau Brummels (1965-66), one of my favorite bands, but joins Harpers Bizarre, another especial, for their first Billboard tune on February 18, 1967 Feelin' Groovy which rises to #13.

FRANK HALEY (Albuquerque, NM)
Jim, you must do the "deed" and have the surgery. I tell you the truth, you will be glad you had it done. You will feel so much better. It's just something us "old guys" have to go through. Merry Christmas my friend, Frank (The Old Texan) Haley cjf Isa. 9:6 "When the sunshine of God's love meets the showers of our sorrow, the rainbow of promise appears."

HELEN STEINER RICE (May 19, 1900-1981) Peace on earth will come to stay, When we live Christmas every day.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!
