ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
CATWOMAN SUCCUMBS
The sultry female vixen that we fans remember as Catwoman in the 1960s Batman TV series dies of colon cancer at 81 on Christmas Day, Wednesday, December 25, 2008. Eartha Kitt is the second Catwoman after Julie Newmar leaves the role. Eartha comes to life on January 17, 1927 as Eartha Mae Keith. Over the years, Kitt earns a strong reputation as a Jazz singer and actress. Eartha makes her film debut in 1950 in Dr. Faustus. Orson Welles personally handpicks her for the role of Helen of Troy. Eartha records the classic Christmas song Santa Baby which Madonna later brings back to the charts. In 1984, Kitt returns to Billboard's Top 40 with her disco hit Where Is My Man. In the 1960s, Kitt marries Bill McDonald that lasts for 5 years. They have one child plus two grandchildren, Jason and Rachel. Visit the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6656 Hollywood Boulevard to see Eartha Kitt's bright shiny star.

ENTERTAINER OF THE YEAR
The annual Associated Press (AP) Entertainer of the Year award goes to actress Tina Fey. We remember Tina not only for her rectangular eyeglasses but also her appearances on the Saturday Night Live news desk and last but not least is her on target impersonation of Alaska's governor and VP candidate Sarah Palin. Newspaper editors and broadcast producers across the good ole USA bestow this annual honor onto worthy performers.
TAYLOR TOPS THE CHART
Music sales for the Christmas holiday period receive a big boost from the new teen senation Taylor Swift. Taylor's album Fearless sells 330,000 copies in the week that leads up to Christmas 2008. This puts her at the #1 spot on Billboard's album chart.

SCOTT HODGES (Shreveport, LA) Good morning Jim, seems you and I had a similar experience at one time. I was anchoring news at WTIX New Orleans for Jim Swiler in 1968 when I first heard from John Rhodes at KTSA. I, along with the late Art Kevin from KHJ were covering the Clay Shaw Conspiracy trial in the Crescent city at the time. John made me an offer. I opted instead for an anchor slot at KTVE-TV 10 where I worked for Mack Ward and co-anchored the 6 and 10 with Chuck Machen and Clay Scott. While at KTVE John made me another offer to join his news staff at KTSA. After a while I accepted, packed the wife and new daughter up and off we went to the Alamo city. Biggest mistake for me too. However, all worked out well after Kahn L. Hammon introduced me to Roy Eaton at WBAP Ft. Worth. Eaton made a slot for me there. Was at WBAP for only 3 months when Art Kevin made an opening for me at KHJ in L.A. This slot ultimately took me to the top news slot at New York's WXLO-FM with Jerry Clifton. I literally hated New York City so I returned to Seattle, then to Dallas at KLIF with Joe Holstead in '71, and in the early '80s in Dallas at KNUS with Larry James. Great ride! Worst move though was to KTSA in San Antonio. Still a great ride! Cheers, Scott (

GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX) Hi Jim, Tom Kelly was his real name and that is all he every used to my knowledge. I Googled up his name and there were a lot of them named Tom Kelly but none I found was the one I was looking for. I was hoping one of your readers might know him from his history at KBAT. He was an Airman from Lackland AFB and we played at their golf course many times. I was about an 8 handicapper and he was a scratch player but he tolerated me anyway. He was single so he spent a lot of time at our house visiting. I think he was homesick being so far away from Ohio. I had just returned from Akron and darn glad to be back in Texas so I could relate. He would be in his early sixties I believe. If you run my request I hope someone will know about him. Thanks, George
DR. BRUCE NELSON (Corpus Christi, TX) An e-mail from Arch Yancey...Was their a star in the east spotted???? Praise the Lord !! Dr. B

BOB CROWLEY (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Happy Christmas night, Jim. I hope this finds you happy and well in your own home. It has been a very good Christmas for the Arlington Crowleys. It will probably be the last before the boys start heading out of town to college. It's been fun to see them enjoying each other. We made a quick trip down to San Antonio to take my mother to Mass. Liz Ruiz was singing in the choir. She sang a solo, and it was excellent. Liz has been with KTSA for at least a quarter- century. I was able to visit with her for a few minutes after mass. She's still doing afternoon news. I asked her to pass along greetings to Johnny Shannon. My mother pointed out another family in courch, and asked if I knew them. She said it was the Mays. Indeed it was Mark Mays, President of Clear Channel with his wife and about half a dozen children. I thought of approaching him, but I'm not sure he would remember me, and besides, I wanted to talk to Liz Ruiz. I came back home with a plate of cookies, a bushel of mesquite wood and some homegrown oranges from my brother's tree. It was a good visit. I'm writing Christmas night from the WBAP Newsroom. Bob Morrison was going to work the holiday for me, but has been hospitalized with some internal issues. I'm hoping he will be back very soon. And you get well, or stay well. Give that big doggie a hug. Hope the new year brings you everything you need. Bob Crowley
