SEVENTIES ROCK ICON DIES
A singer-songwriter-producer who teams with the likes of Eric Clapton and George Harrison on 1970s Rock classics dies at 69 just before 5 am on Saturday, December 28, 2008 at UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center in Los Angeles from complications of gall-bladder surgery. Delaney Bramlett and his wife Bonnie form Rock duo Delaney & Bonnie. They have a jam session smash with their Never Ending Song of Love which reaches #13 on Billboard's Pop chart in the summer of 1971. The idea is to make a record that sounds like a bunch of musicians who jam in their motel room while on tour. Many other artists cover the great tune. In fall 1971 Dickey Lee's version hits #8 on Billboard's Country chart. The Mississippi native Delaney has a music business career that spans 50 years. In December 1969, Bonnie Bramlett releases a single on Atlantic records, Groupie, that she co-writes with Leon Russell. In September 1971, Karen Carpenter takes the tune to #2 on the Billboard Pop charts but with a different name, Superstar. It sells over a half million copies for the Carpenters. Others who record the tune are Usher, Luther Vandross, Bette Midler. Recently, Sonic Youth's version shows up in the Grammy-nominated soundtrack of the movie Juno. Delaney co-writes Let it Rain with British guitarist Eric Clapton, who also records the song. More than 100 artists record the tune and that includes Ray Charles in an LP. In late 1993, Bonnie Bramlett's daughter, Bekka (The Zoo), replaces Stevie Nicks in Fleetwood Mac.

LEN HART (Geneva, Switzerland) Jim, Sounds like we just missed each other at KULF. I was doing news at KULF. At that time, the jocks included Scotty Brink, Chuck Buell (WLS alumnus) Steve Lundy (afternoons, as I recall) I left to become News Dir at KENR. Lundy moved over to KENR a bit later, if I am remembering correctly. I never heard Lundy say an unkind word. One of the great radio voices of all time. Looks like we kept missing each other LOL...Thanks for your great email...I hope we can stay in touch. A ol' radio guy, Len (

rosekkkj@earthlink.net.BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) Just learned of death yesterday (in L.A.) of singer, songwriter, record producer, Delaney Bramlett @69 from complications of gall-bladder surgery. His southern-blues-rock group with then-wife Bonnie, scored a smash hit in mid-1971:"Never Ending Song of Love," (recorded by 100 artists) & his career spanned 5 decades. He recently released a new album, :"A New Kind of Blues." His daughter Bekka (B.4/19/68) is a solo rec.artist. Delaney co-wrote, "Let It Rain" w/ Eric Clapton & he produced records by Etta James & Elvin Bishop, etc. Know you'll have much more on this story...just a heads-up from BOB.
GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX) Hi Jim, One of my most bazaar experiences happened in 1957 shortly after I assumed my morning duties at KUZN in West Monroe, Louisiana. The program director had supplied me with a key for the front door because I would be the one opening up each morning. I took nothing for granted so I tried the key to make sure it worked. It did. I hopped out of bed the next morning and took my refreshing morning walk to work. I ran briskly up the stairs, placed my key in the lock and turned it. The door wouldn’t budge. I tried several times. No success at all. I sat down on the steps and contemplated what to do next. Then I remembered that the back window to the control room was never locked because we liked to open it for fresh air. I walked around to the back of the building and looked for a way to climb to the second floor. As luck would have it, there was a power pole with spike steps driven into it. I climbed up the pole, stepped onto the shelter covering the sidewalk, walked across it and then opened the control room window and crawled through. I fired up the radio station and got on the air in plenty of time. It seems the door had a second lock toward the bottom and my key didn’t work in it.
