HAPPY 2009!

ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

TV NETWORKS PULL REPORTERS
NBC TV's Tom Brokaw puts down President George W. Bush's troop surge as a folly. He says the war is a lost cause. But President Bush's troop surge has great success in the war in Iraq. American troop deaths are at their lowest level since the Iraq war begins in March 2003. The Iraqi civilian death toll also drops sharply in 2008. With no more heavy death tolls to proclaim, all three non-cable American TV networks with evening news - ABC, CBS and NBC - decide to pull their full time reporters out of Iraq. Correspondent Brian Stelter says the lack of violence means the networks show less interest in the war in Iraq:. Representatives for the networks emphasized that they would continue to cover the war and said the staff adjustments reflected the evolution of the conflict in Iraq from a story primarily about violence to one about reconstruction and politics.

RADIO TRANSMITTER STOLEN

In the Maldon District of Burnham, Essex, England thieves steal the transmitter of community radio station Saint FM (94.7) at around 8:30pm on Tuesday evening, December 30, 2008 which knocks the station off the air. Saint FM Station Organiser Sandra Amey Martin tells the Maldon and Burnham Standard newspaper that everyone is shocked and dismayed after hearing the news. We’re all extremely upset and disgusted someone would do this. We live in quite a rural area and offer a vital service to a lot of people who don’t all have internet access and have lost complete contact with us. At the moment we’re completely off air and we don’t know how long it will be for. Ms. Martin says We are, though, still broadcasting our full schedule online at www.
saintfm.org.uk and we would love you to join us there! We'll be back as soon as possible on 94.7 fm. Ofcom awards Saint FM their community radio license in May 2006. Programming launches in December 2007.

LEN HART (Geneva, Switzerland) Jim, I never worked Austin, though. After leaving KENR, I got into 'corporate consulting', teaching corporate execs how to be interviewed without looking like the a***s most of them were. The money was very good --but as I did that, I was building up a commercial photography clientele and shot catalogs for some major retailers and shopping malls from New York to Chicago to San Francisco. My last DJ gig was between 'catalog' assignments --a small station in North metro Houston, KTUN. It was the most fun I EVER had on radio. The owners had hired a a Los Angeles PD who told me to forget the format --just play what I liked! Wow!!! I never had so much fun! I was married for twenty years but my English wife died in 1989 and was a bachelor for many years. I met my Swiss wife online, returned to Europe, connected up and did Florence and the lovely villages around Geneva. We decided to marry. I moved here two years ago and Vera and I live just minutes from downtown Geneva. The climate is great, but a bit cold for about two months around Christmas. Summers are great. My American ex-pat friend, Matthew Stevenson, and I were doing a syndicated travel program for a while. We were on Portland, for about six months but couldn't manage to turn that into a springboard for wider syndication. After that, a Christian station in France picked us up but cancelled us when the owner (an American ex-pat) become convinced that we were practicing Satanists. So --please, add my email add to your subscription list. I was using Feedblitz for awhile until I had feed problems. I believe my 'feed' is OK on Class Acts and will probably add Feedblitz to the mix. Thanks for your great email...I hope we can stay in touch. A ol' radio guy, Len (http://classicacts.blogspot.com/)

BUD BUSCHARDT (Dallas, TX)
Subject: Happy New Year! Hope this year is a lot better for you (and almost everyone else) than 2008. Best wishes on your surgery and have a speedy recovery. FYI on recent trivia question: Cissy Houston (Whitney's mother) had the first version of "Midnight Train To Georgia" on Janus Records about a year before Gladys Knight. She was the first to change and use (with approval) the changed lyrics of "Midnight Train To Houston" rather than Gladys. Bud

THE WHOLE IDEA behind the trivia question about the Classic tune Midnight Train to Georgia is to tie the songwriter, Jim Weatherly, and song to Farrah Fawcett that most of us folks do not know about until it surfaces here in JRRR. Who remembers Sissy Houston's version of Midnight Train to Georgia? We never hear it on the radio. Sissy only has one single on Billboard - Be My Baby - but it's what we in radio call a stiff because its highest position is #92. Many other artists also record Midnight Train to Georgia. But, it takes Gladys Knight and the Pips to bring the song to Classic Evergreen status. Gladys Knight's version hits #1 on Billboard in fall 1973 and sells over a half million copies. It is one of my all time favorite tunes.

GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX)
Hi again Jim, Another saga from my radio memories. In 1957 I worked at KMLB in Monroe, Louisiana. We were in a shack in the middle of a cotton patch and I was all alone. A vicious thunder storm hit suddenly. The back door was always kept open to keep the transmitter cool. I heard a strange noise coming from that direction. When I opened the door I saw that the blowing rain was hitting the transmitter and miniature lightning bolts were dancing all around. I ran past the transmitter as fast as I could, jumped through the open door and slammed it shut behind me. By the time I got back to the front door I was soaked to the skin. As soon as the transmitter stopped sparking I took off my clothes and hung them there to dry. As I was sitting at the control board clad only in my underwear and shivering from the cold the manager walked through the door. He turned a deaf ear to my explanation of what had just happened. The next day there was a note on the bulletin board. RADIO PERSONNEL WILL REMAINED FULLY CLOTHED AT ALL TIMES. Not a word was said about how I had single handedly saved the transmitter and possibly the whole building from burning down.

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) An old friend in radio (now RET) wants me to ask you if you recall a "morn-man" KULF, Houston about 1979 name of Bobby Noack. My friend says this man now uses name, Bob McClain as PD of WORD, Spartanburg, SC & sis sta WYRD, Greenville, SC. Know him?? I'll relay your message. best to you both for Christmas. BOB

TRIVIA ANSWER:
Rock group Badfinger writes and originally records the great tune Without You but it does not even reach Billboard's Pop chart. Harry Nilsson's version of the ballad, Without You, becomes a #1 all time Classic hit right after Christmas 1971. In 1994, Mariah Carey revives the tune for a #3 spot on Billboard.
