ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

TEXAS RADIO LEGEND PASSES
Former Tichenor Media Systems President McHenry Tichenor Sr., who pioneers Spanish-language media, dies at 76 of natural causes on Saturday, January 3, 2009. McHenry's dad starts it all in the 1940s with a radio signal at 1530 kc on our dial in Harlingen, TX which is now KGBT. The Tichenor radio family views early opportunities and expands into Spanish-language radio which becomes Tichenor Media System. McHenry Sr. is the manager of KGBT and later runs the McAllen-Brownsville CBS-TV affiliate. McHenry Jr., also gets into the family radio business very early. He operates TMS until the merger with rival Heftel in 1997. Mac Jr. continues as the big bossman at Hispanic Broadcasting Corporation. He even sticks around for a while after HBC merges with Univision in 2003. Right up until the end, McHenry Tichenor Sr., toils hard for an NFL franchise for his native Rio Grande Valley. The Brownsville Herald has the rest of the story.

RADIO SUFFERS FIRST CASUALITY FOR 2009

It's time for Don Meridith to sing Willie's Classic tune Turn Out the Lights for Sovereign City Communications syndicated radio format. Sovereign City runs out of gas money - not for their autos but for the entire operation. Sovereign's Green Bay, WI employees catch the winds of change via Mark Follett’s attorney's words on Monday, January 5, 2009. Mark launches Sovereign City Communications in 2007 to produce radio with positive values. Its syndication premieres in 2008 with Wendy Templeton's evening show Wendy in Your Oasis. Later come more dayparts with added staff. Recently Sovereign City's syndication blossoms around the clock 24/7. Sovereign City begins with about 40 employees which is sizable for a small start up company. But Mark Follett’s bankroll only lasts for a little while. Only a limited number of affiliates sign up for the positive values radio format. Certainly not enough to keep the boat afloat. Is this a sign of things to come in 2009? It’s just January 5th. Already we have radio 2009's first casualty.

LEN HART (Geneva, Switzerland) I would be happy to link back to you and have taken the liberty of creating a Jim Rose Remembers Radio 'widget' which, I hope, might drive a few radio afficianados your way. If you like, I can even set you up as a 'contributor' to Class Acts if there is anything that you would like to 'cross post'. Just let me know and I will be happy to do it. 'Class Acts' is sort of my way of doing via the web some of the things the 'consultants' wouldn't let us do on radio. I have original videos, articles, and other embeded videos ---a mult-media experience. As the web gets faster, I hope to stream several 'radio' channels using 'Deltra Trax' or some other automation software. Thanks for your great email...I hope we can stay in touch. A ol' radio guy, Len (http://classicacts.blogspot.com/)

GARY ALLYN (San Diego-Fallbrook,CA)
We lost another great one Jim...and a Texas native too. "Happy Hare"-Harry Martin: We lost a truly unique talent, and a proto-type Morning Air Talent. I was privileged to be Hare’s P.D. at KCBQ in 1968,’69 & 1970. Audiences loved him for his zany enthusiasm. He loved what he did and it showed every day on the air…and off! Radio and all who knew or were touched by Harry will miss this outstanding talent. To paraphrase his oft uttered line: He’ll be "up with angels milking that heavenly public". God Bless you Hap. GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX)
The best GM I ever had was Al Saunders at WHLO in Akron, Ohio. He was a golfer and after my morning shift he would often take me to local courses to play. He loved my show and never complained about anything. However, the PD was on me constantly and the newsman I worked with was a ***** too. He would screw up constantly and then try to blame it on me. About that time Bob Magruder offered me morning drive at KBAT and I took it even though it was for a loss in pay. My wife and I wanted to get back to Texas so bad. Al Saunders begged me to stay and even called in the big brass from York Pennsylvania. The PD and newsman caught **** about the whole thing but I wouldn't budge and went back to Texas. Bob Magruder was fun to work for too and I would have to rate him right up there with Al Saunders. Pat Tallman was the PD and you may know, he was one of the all time great guys in the business. When the station was sold and they brought in new management I left the sinking ship to work for KBER and Harrell Banks and you know how that turned out later.

BUD BUSCHARDT (Dallas, TX) Jim, Since I already knew about the Farrrah Fawcett bit I misread your trivia question answer to mean that Gladys had changed the words from "Midnight Plane To Houston" to "Midnight Train To Georgia" when actually it was Cissy Houston that got the permission to do so. Whitney Houston's mom is the unsung hero for having the foresight to know a hit but Janus Records did not promote it. Therefore nobody really heard it until a CD compilation of her work was released. Cissy's version is very similar to Knight's but does not have the production value that the hit had. Such is the story of many first versions of songs that became hits during the Rock & Roll era. Bud

DAN MCCURDY (Sherman, TX) Jim...Strangely enough, I never had to ad lib spots from a newspaper; the stations I worked for had continuity (copy) writers...guess the sales managers didn't trust us to 'punt from the paper'. Ralph (Ron) Chapman and I used to ad lib lots of spots as Charlie and Harrigan on KLIF...Shakey's Pizza (Andy Stacio, owner), First National Bank (Jay Lawrence, Prez)...the Bronco Bowl...and numbers of others. The trick was never to go into an ad lib spot (or a funny bit) without having a punch line in mind to end the bit...that's the secret that many so-so/small-time DJs never figured out...they let their egos overload their mouths, plowed into the fact sheet or copy points and ended most schticks with a whimper and the local time/temp...then to an up-tempo record. Meanwhile, the listeners are saying, "Whatta doofus...I could do better than that." Gordon used to have a sign in the control room that read: "The 3 B's of Good Broadcasting - B-Funny, B-informative or B-Quiet."

TRIVIA ANSWER: Burt Bacharach who writes Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head first offers the song to Bob Dylan and Ray Stevens. But both turn it down. The next person Burt asks is B.J. Thomas and as the saying goes the rest is history. The tune zooms to #1 for 4 weeks, wins a Grammy and sells over a half million copies. B.J. Thomas has the magic touch. B.J. first opens his eyes in Hugo, OK but grows up in Houston, TX suburb Rosenberg. He sings on local TV and at concerts all around our area. So we claim him as our very own pride and joy. The tune's melody shines brightly as the theme song for the legendary 1969 movie Sundance and Butch Cassidy with stars Paul Newman and Robert Redford.

MARK CARRILLO (San Antonio, TX)
Brother Jim, Two issues ago you start with the death of either DELANEY or BONNIE but you never say which one died. Some clarity please. Also, Only You Know and I Know is one of the best jams of all time. It rocks and has more soul than a bus full of Stax artists. By the way, Never Ending Song of Love was a hit a dozen years ago or so on the Tejano charts by Ram Herrera. It was sung in English, which is unusual for a Tejano song. I have forwarded your wonderful newsletter to John Lackness an old college bud/ex-jock/audio equipment seller. He’s excited to get it.

ROBERT DUVALL (January 5, 1931-p) Listening to critics is like letting Muhammad Ali decide which astronaut goes to the moon.
