HAPPY BIRTHDAY ELVIS PRESLEY!
On Thursday, January 8, 2009 we celebrate Elvis Presley's 74th birthday. Can we even imagine The King of Rock'n'Roll in his seventies? During the kick off of the 70th Anniversary of Graceland, CNN's Larry King Live and Entertainment Tonight both cover the event live in Memphis, TN with Priscilla Presley plus a tour of Graceland, the cutting of Elvis' birthday cake and a proclamation of Elvis Presley Day. Can you dig it, baby? Priscilla also introduces us to the newest addition to Graceland - a 10 month old colt. We can see the coverage plus other neat Elvis Presley happenings online at http://Elvis.com

MORNING SHOW LEAVES
Twentieth Television cancels The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet for the 2009-2010 season. Bob Cook, 20th's P/CEO. says Unfortunately, the current serious economic conditions made it challenging to continue producing the type of unique program that we wanted to deliver. The Morning Show with hosts Mike Jerrick and Juliet Huddy broadcasts live from the Fox studios in NYC, Monday through Friday. The new Morning Show with Mike and Juliet premieres here in Houston on January 22, 2009 at 9 am on Fox KRIV TV CH26 right after the FOX 26 Morning News. Original programs continue in production through June 2009. The show broadcasts daily until September 2009.
OHIO TV ANCHOR AND REPORTER VANISH
The Dayton, Ohio Business Journal reports on Tuesday, January 6, 2009 that a WDTN TV CH2 news anchor plus one reporter's contracts expire in December 2008 which do not renew for 2009. News Anchor/Reporter Mike Schell and Reporter Mandy Sheridan's contracts run out at the end of December 2008 and neither one returns in 2009. Lisa Barhorst, WDTN TV VP/GM, says they will not fill those two positions or Chief Photographer Bob Phillips' spot who recently retires. Barhorst admits those are economic decisions. What we’re doing is the same as any other business. We’re continuously looking at our structure for positive results in this tough economic climate. The NBC affiliate also says that it offers voluntary buyouts to other newsroom employees. Currently, WDTN TV has about 50 people in its newsroom staff. It's a sign of the times.

LEN HART (Geneva, Switzerland) Jim, It (KTUN) was 1180 AM... and 1982-83. I started in TV very young...10 or 12. I was doing a ventriloquist act on the local CBS affiliate [KOSA-TV] in Odessa, TX. I made appearances on Funzapoppin (entirely locally produced) and, later, Capn' Mac and his Magic Train'. It was at about the same time Roy Orbison's 'Teen Kings' were doing a regular Sat afternoon show on the same station. I don't think Roy got paid either. A couple of years ago, I found a CD of recordings made of Roy and his 'Teen Kings' while doing their TV show. The audio quality was surprisingly good. Hope this is some help. Sincerely, Len (

DAN MCCURDY (Sherman, TX) Jim...I haven't seen notation of the passing of Jack Auldridge in any radio blogs (obit below)...he passed away December 18, 2008 at age 76. He owned Regency Broadcasting in San Angelo and was a part of the 'Charlie and Harrigan' team that replaced Ron Chapman and me on KLIF in 1965. I've known Jack for many years, and have dealt with his daughter, JoAnna Alexander, general manager of KDCD, and KMDX in San Angelo. Regency was recently sold to 4 R Broadcasting, a California company with additional radio holdings in Clovis, NM and Portales, NM. Dan McCurdy - Charlie Brown/Dan Patrick, KLIF, KBOX - Dallas; WMEX- Boston; Inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame 2004. (http://obituaries.sanangelostandardtimes.com/obit.cfm?ID=10431)
GARY ALLYN (San Diego-Fallbrook,CA) From what I hear Jim, Harry (Happy Hare Martin) had liver cancer, and went rather quickly. We're all shocked to say the least. A super talent stilled. gary a. (www.garyallyn.com) (http://garyallynsradiopinion.blogspot.com/)
WENDEL HULSE (D/FW-Grand Prairie, TX) Subject: JRRR (#602 - 2008 IN REVIEW) Jim, your explanation of the events of 2008 was a CLASSIC! You very accurately identified events and gave a reasonable explanation of each one using our favorite personalities of the past. I loved it and I will save it for reference in future years. And my most favorite comment was, "James Garner is the only real Maverick." Thanks for giving me something to smile about on this new year's day. Wendel Hulse
BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) Just a couple of notes in my files for this week: (1) Austin City Limits premiered on PBS 1/2/76 with 42 yr. old Willie Nelson as first guest; (2) Elvis birthday 1/8; Priscilla appears on Entertainment Tonight & Larry King Live on same evening TV shows. Noted your quote-for-day JRRR, 1/7 from Robert Duvall. FYI, the actor turned 78 on 1/5 & I believe he still resides on his farm in Loudon County, VA (about 5 miles from my only son in Leesburg, VA.) This is also near the former estate of the late Arthur Godfrey, which sported it's own runway for the radio-tv-pilot to commute to his NYC shows. (Godfrey 8/31/03-3/16/83 @ 79). Godfrey started his career in nearby Washington, D.C. BOB & Sonny Lee
EVELYN PATE-ALLEN (Kemp-Tool, TX) Subject: Thanks. Jim, several of the men that worked with Sam Pate at KBOX and KLIF called him day before yesterday to wish him Happy Birthday. Will you convey all of them on your web page of Joan and my appreciation. When I called him yesterday, he was very excited when telling me about.
JERRY MILLER [Mueller] (Houston, TX) Gosh, Jim, I've known George Lester for years, but...how many stations has he worked for!?? Seems he has more mileage than a Mayflower Van! Jerry
GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX) A man wanted to speak to his dearly departed aunt. Someone told him about a woman who could contact the dead. He made an appointment and soon he sat across a table in a dimly lit room and watched as she went through her procedure to reach the other side. After awhile she started to contort her face and make strange noises. Suddenly she smiled and spoke with a voice that was weird and unearthly. She called the man by his name and told him she was his now deceased aunt. She said that she never liked him and that he was only interested in her money. She laughed and laughed and said he would never get a penny of her wealth because she had given it all to charity. As she continued to laugh and tease him he jumped up and punched her right in the face. Then he was arrested. The charges were...STRIKING A HAPPY MEDIUM! Ha ha ha...
