ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

GOOD WAY TO TELL IF ECONOMY IS BAD
Want to determine just how bad the economy is? The adult industry (porn) experiences a down-turn. The Adult Entertainment Expo, which is the annual get together that runs along side the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, has fewer exhibitors and less fans. An Adult Video News rep, which runs the show, says the exhibitor count drops about 18% from last year. Joy King, VP of special projects at Wicked, estimates that adult entertainment revenue is down more than 20% in 2008. This leads to lower profits and layoffs. Larry Flynt. Hustler mag's head, puts in a semi-satirical request for a federal bailout. Joy explains, Usually we’re recession proof. In my 24 years in the industry, this is the first time I’ve really seen us being affected. King notes, The amount of free porn online is likely hurting the biz as fans look to cut back on spending. In desperation some adult film companies use the show to do what is not normally allowed: sell DVDs. Their solution is to give away T-shirts, calendars and hats with adult DVDs on sale for between $20 and $40.

SWIFT CRIME INVESTIGATION

CBS TV proclaims that Country super singer Taylor Swift appears on an upcoming episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Taylor portrays a teenager by the name of Haley Jones whose parents run a run-down Las Vegas Hotel. CBS says during the show's season her character experiences a series of changes with tragic consequences. To keep us Taylor Swift fans in suspense, CBS TV stores her debut episode's air date in their private folder.

DR. JEFF CUNNINGHAM (Austin-Kyle, TX)
I have to tell you, I went to see Marley and Me as well, and Dunaway isn't the only one that teared up, even though it is hard to imagine Dunaway crying over anything but money (yuk yuk). The movie is a good one, though. In retrospect it was not about the death of a dog, but the life of a family and Marley was a member of the family. He still is. I will never get over losing my beloved Bassett Hound, Angela Bassett and I still tear up at the loss of my Beagle, Snoopy. But the love they gave me outweighs the loss I felt then and now. But, I think back and see all the friends and love that I have had in this world and none of it compares to the unconditional love of a child or a dog. I have had the good fortune to have both. JOHN VANVLECK (Austin, TX)
I got your site from Google website, I live near Austin TX and I was an aquaintence with a DJ named Jay Thomas in 67-68 when he was a late night DJ on KFMK FM based at the Medical Arts Bldg in Houston and wondered if he was still around. You are welcome to keep my address for you records. Thanks for response.

MIKE CANNON (Houston, TX) The stories from George Lester seem to be missing something. Like an intro of some sort. I'd suggest a corn-pone drawn out voice saying something like "Hey, Mister Lester". Tell my old friend hello for me from that youngun he worked with at KENR in another life. And feel free to pass my email address along to him. You're in my prayers regarding your health issues. Mike Cannon, Director of Broadcast Operations, Houston Astros Baseball Club

GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX) Hi Jim! One day 1957, when I worked for KRGV RADI0/TV in Weslaco, Texas, I entered the building anticipating a rush of refrigerated air to bring relief from the scorching heat outside only to discover it was almost as hot inside. The air conditioner had quit working. The kindly station owner came around and informed us that it might take a while to get the air conditioner fixed because all the local repairmen were swamped.. He suggested that we dress comfortably in the meantime. He added that, under the circumstances, bathing suits were not out of the question. The next day that I came to work wearing Bermuda shorts and a T-shirt. Most of the other employees were attired in similar clothing, but one gorgeous young lady took the owner up on his offer. She paraded around all day in a scanty bikini. It was difficult for all us male employees to keep our minds on our work that day. To be perfectly honest, I was in no hurry for the air conditioner to be repaired. George Lester

DAVID PERKINS (D/FW, TX) Hey, Jimbo and Tejas (good girl!) Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Sorry I'm so late. But first, hope your enraged Prostrate is fine. I know you and you're always on the cutting edge of something! Now, my wife and I went up to visit the grandkids in Pennsylvania and swung by my old, old, old radio stomping grounds in New York City. For a year I was the morning man on WTHE (The Sound Of Country Music) with studios and transmitter in Queens. It was too cold for this Cowtown boy and after a year of living in an ice box I came back South. I've forgotten names but I wonder who the PD was there. He was from the NYC area but had worked in Midland and thought Texas radio was the best training ground for jocks in the world. I'll tell at least one story. When I got there, I was rooming with an old high school buddy and called WABC and asked to speak with the PD. I just wanted to say "Howdy" but he thought I wanted to come by for an interview and give him my aircheck. Anyway, he gets another somebody on the phone and together they gently suggest (after laughing with me not at me) that with my Fort Worth accent and all to contact one of the two country stations in the area. I did by the way and this PD, whose name I can't remember made a noon to two pm show for me. Two months later I was doing the mornings. I loved NYC. The fans there were the best of anyplace! But baby, it's cold outside! Jimbo, you take care of yourself. There's only one of you and we'd be lost without you. TRIVIA ANSWER:
Cable TV channel CNBC is short for Consumer News and Business Channel.

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) As I reflect on 2008, I can say we had a great year: Blacks are happy; Obama was elected. Whites are happy; OJ is in jail. Democrats are happy; George Bush is leaving office. Republicans are happy; Democrats will finally quit saying George Bush stole the election. And all of us are so happy; The election is finally over! I think 2009 will be even better: Immediately after his inauguration, Obama will balance the budget, revive the economy, solve the real estate problem, solve the auto industry problem, solve our gas/alternative energy problem, stop the fires and mudslides in California, ban hurricanes and tornadoes, stop identity theft, reverse global warming, find Osama bin Laden, solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, get rid of corruption in government and achieve world peace. Then on the 7th day, He will rest...according to the newscasters.

DAVID LETTERMAN (April 12, 1947-p)
We can all sleep easy at night knowing that somewhere at any given time, the Foo Fighters are out there fighting Foo.
