ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

CITADEL TRIMS STAFF
Citadel's first big name layoff in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2008 is on Monday, March 3, 2008 when Melanie Morgan, Conservative morning show cohost on talk radio powerhouse KSFO-560, vacates her 5-9 am spot on the dial. As part of Citidel’s across-the-board cost-cuts, the big chiefs in the teepee decide not to renew Melanie’s contract even though she is a fixture on KSFO for the past 14 years (1994-2008). As most of us well know, this far exceeds radio standards for longevity. FYI: Morgan is the wife of KGO OM Jack Swanson. Several sources point to lay-offs at Citidel Newstalk KGO-810, too. Among those we find on the exit ramp are long-time employees: Gregg Jarrett (news anchor); Greg Edmonds (East Bay reporter); Harry Hall (producer); David Rich (internet producer) and GM Mickey Luckoff's secretary of 41 years, Sue Ostrom. As Petula Clark says in her summer 1966 #11 hit tune it's A Sign of the Times.

L.A. INDIE DUO FLIPS

Here's yet another sign of the times. In a morning meeting on Thursday, January 15, 2009 Entravision removes the format plus all DJs and programming staff from Alternative duo KDLD FM/KDLE FM Santa Monica/Newport Beach, CA (Indie 103.1) that serves the greater Los Angeles, CA market in favor of a loop rotation of a few tunes. A message says Indie can no longer compete with the corporate radio game. A new format expects to air this weekend but nothing tells us what it is. Rolling Stone once calls Indie the coolest commercial station in America. Indie moves its Alternative format online. For biting edge information on this situation check out Indie's Web site (
www.indie1031.com). Max Tolkoff, former Indie PD, is readily available at skuldor@att.net.

LEN HART (Geneva, Switzerland) Jim, Odessa was a hot bed of musicians in those days. Most of them recorded in New Mexico with Norman Petty. Waylon Jennings and Jerry Lee Lewis were playing all the hony tonks. I went to high school with Larry Gatlin. The "Gatlin Family Singers" did a lot of gospel in those days as well as some Pat Boone covers. I lost contract with Larry briefly --but ran into him in Houston in 1967 on the U of H Campus. I was studying philosophy and history. My degree plan required a foreign language and I chose French in anticipation --even then --of one day living in Europe. Hope this is some help. Sincerely, Len (http://classicacts.blogspot.com/)

DON LOGAN (Shreveport-Benton, LA)
Jim, If you could put this out to your readers. A very good writer in Boston is writing a book on George Carlin. Carlin worked here in Shreveport, so any of your old time jock readers who were in the area (1956-57) can pass their info or Carlin stories along to me and I will get it to him. Carlin also worked KXOL, so you guys that knew him there in Ft. Worth, if you have input, get it to me, quick. One question for everybody: A Shreveport radio man Carlin claimed got him his job in Boston before he went to Fort Worth was named Homer Odom, who worked for McLendon. I worked for McLendon in 59 in Shreveport and he was gone when I got here. Anyone with info on Homer, email

MIKE MARSHALL (Houston, TX) Jim, although I've retired, I'm still doing service calls for former customers. I have an appointment Wednesday 1-14 near, guess where? Memorial and Kirkwood at about 2. I'm not sure how long it will take, but I thought I could pop by your place for a visit after I've finished. Call me tomorrow if that will work for you. If not, we'll get together another time. I don't have time to find it now, but somewhere I have a newspaper ad from the Dallas Morning News showing you and me together at WFAA. I'll dig it out and make a copy for you. Cheers, Mike Marshall

GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX) Hello Jimmy Boy, Please feel free to pass my email address on to Mike Cannon and anyone else who you deem trustworthy. Mike was still in high school when he came to work for KENR. He is the only person I know of who started right out in a major market without ever having to go through the rigors of small town radio. It took me 19 years to get to Houston. I was very happy to see that he had landed on his feet after getting put on the same KENR exit ramp I traveled. I was already in my middle 50s and I never made it back to "big time radio". It is h*** trying to land a job at that age no matter how much talent you have. I later learned that one young PD at another Houston radio station confided that his first order of business was to get rid of DJs old enough to be his father. He was referring to me and he kept his word. He congratulated me on a Tuesday for the best A.M. drive book that the station had ever had then he called me in on Friday and gave me the ax. I sued the station for age discrimination and they settled out of court.

MIKE HARTMAN (Ft. Worth-Joshua, TX) Subject: Judge Roy Moore - something to think about. Jim...Thanks for sending that. Political correctness, moral relativism (Your truth isn't my truth), and the ACLU ultimately have one enemy...Christianity. How dare them believe that Jesus is the only way to Heaven. Remember, we don't want to offend anyone. Even the atheist. And if you notice on certain talk shows where political correctness flourishes, two scriptures are thrown at the "intolerant"..."Judge not, lest you be judged" and "Love one another". And...if the truth be known, moat of the time these scriptures are used out of context. Especially if someone, most notably a Christian, says he or she believes that same sex relationships are sinful. The same argument applies to abortion. Except, of course, that a group of lilly livered Supreme Court judges made that legal. Look at slavery. It was legal in parts of this nation for many many years. But, thank God, it was abolished. I pray the same thing can happen to abortion. Unless the mother's health is at risk. That's my personal opinion. Reason being, that happened to my wife and I...there truly was a life threatening situation facing my wife. Even with an excuse like that, it still hurts. That's why it's heartbreaking to me when women have abortions for reasons of convenience. The saying is so true..."The most dangerous place in America today is the womb". Abortion, by the way, is big business. If someone is against same sex relationships and abortion...under the guidelines of political correctness...they're usually tossed into the category of the extremist. You can't just disagree. It's either one extreme or the other. And those are just two examples. A born again believer, lead by the Holy Spririt can be delivered out of lifestyles and habits that are contrary to God's will. Does God guarantee it will be easy or painless? No. But, He does guarantee that He'll never forsake or leave us. Jim, as I type this, I believe the Lord Jesus Christ is all the Holy Scriptures (Genesis through Revelations) proclaim Him to be. May God, in Jesus' Holy Name, bless you and yours...and may He bless this nation of ours. Take care of yourself and let me know how your surgery came out. Mike

RAY WHITWORTH (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Subject: Judge Roy Moore - something to think about... No can do JIm. Judge Moore is not what his image pretends him to be. He has ruled in favor of political cash contributors, spent gov funds on private things (think Ted Stevens slightly) and he believes that Hitler was right about Jews. <American Spectator, Newsweek, Washington Times> Nope this guy is a self promoting fraud. Ray

BERTRAND RUSSELL (1872-1970) What is wanted is not the will to believe, but the will to find out, which is the exact opposite.
