ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

MR. ROARKE DIES
Movie and TV actor Ricardo Montalban whose most famous role is star of the TV hit series Fantasy Island dies at 88 on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at his home in Los Angeles, CA. Ricardo's role on the ABC TV hit series from 1978 to 1984 brings him fame and fortune. We also remember Montalban as the spokesman for the new 1975 Chrysler Cordoba when he brags about its Corinthian leather seats and interior. David Brokaw, longtime publicist and friend, reflects, The person you sensed he was from his work - someone elegant, gentlemanly, kind, dignified, friendly, accessible - that's exactly who he was when the camera was off. He felt there should be some mystique around a star. When someone knocked on his door for an interview, he would clear his throat, fix his tie and then bring them in. It was authentic, but it was a performance. Afterward he'd always make us a couple stiff drinks. He also portrays villains. Remember Montalban as the tyrant Khan in the 1982 movie Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan? Ricardo is a devoted Catholic and family man. He has four children with his wife of 63 years, Georgiana Young, who is actress Loretta Young's sister. Georgiana dies in late 2007.

INAUGURATION DAY CHANGES

On Tuesday, January 20, 2009 Clear Channel Radio introduces a massive restructuring plan by its new owners Bain Capital and Thomas H. Lee Partners to cut out up to $400 million in costs. This involves layoffs throughout Clear Channel Radio, its outdoor advertising and international divisions plus cuts to programming budgets and consolidation of back-office operations. The new owners move toward a national programming model with less local staff at stations. The New York Post says that it's not a coincidence that the cutbacks happen on the same day that Barack Obama swears in as the United States President. CCR's new management team under Bain Capital and Thomas H. Lee Partners believes this: They can slip in the layoffs while the press is preoccupied with Inauguration Day festivities. Nothing about our plans have changed except for the speed and timing of them. There's no doubt we are in a horrible advertising environment, and we can't just sit there and take it.

JO TRAVIS (Hot Springs, AR) 'Ed Freeman... A True Hero' You're an 18 or 19 year old kid. You're critically wounded, and dying in the jungle in the Ia Drang Valley, 11-14-1965. LZ Xray, Vietnam. Your infantry unit is outnumbered 8-1, and the enemy fire is so intense, from 100 or 200 yards away, that your own Infantry Commander has ordered the MediVac helicopters to stop coming in. You're lying there, listening to the enemy machine guns, and you know you're not getting out. Your family is 1/2 way around the world, 12,000 miles away, and you'll never see them again. As the world starts to fade in and out, you know this is the day. Then, over the machine gun noise, you faintly hear that sound of a helicopter, and you look up to see an un-armed Huey, but it doesn't seem real, because no Medi-Vac markings are on it. Ed Freeman is coming for you. He's not Medi-Vac, so it's not his job, but he's flying his Huey down into the machine gun fire, after the Medi-Vacs were ordered not to come. He's coming anyway. And he drops it in, and sits there in the machine gun fire, as they load 2 or 3 of you on board. Then he flies you up and out through the gunfire, to the Doctors and Nurses. And, he kept coming back... 13 more times...and took about 30 of you and your buddies out, who would never have gotten out. Medal of Honor Recipient Ed Freeman died last Wednesday at the age of 80, in Boise, ID ... May God rest his soul... (Oh yeah, Paul Newman died that day too.) I guess you knew that. He got a lot more press than Ed Freeman. This makes three times today that an e-mail has made me cry. Jo (www.JimWWTravis.com)

Yes sir...I have heard you on the radio many times, just not sure if it was KIKK, KENR, or KILT, I am sure I have heard you on KENR before though. I sure would love to sit with you over lunch one day and get more educated on radio and the inner workings un-known to the common artist. If you ever want to go get some bar-b-que and don't mind the company, just give me a shout. Feel free to call anytime. Gary Helms

JIM LAWRENCE (Dallas, TX) Subject: Greetings from Dallas. Jim, Hope this finds you feeling well. Wanted to let you know that STATION BREAK, my short 1990s novel featuring a handful of aging, former rock jocks, is now available electronically for the Kindle reader from Amazon.com My hope has always been that the story's far-out plot and broadcast-related humor might draw a chuckle or two from my fellow "ol' radio guys." If you're interested in a paperback copy, just e-mail me with a snail-mail address or PO Box, and I'll be sure you get one. (p.s. - My broadcast b/g from many years ago included KWFR, KTEO AND KGKL San Angelo, TX, and KRLD, WRR-AM, and KXOL-AM in DFW.) Thanks for all your hard work with JRRR, and continued best wishes. Jim Lawrence

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) Hi, It is marvelous that any of us survive as long as we do. I don't buy as many CDs now since I tend to try and create the tune by playing it on my guitar. I heard a song I like but not sure of the group/singer. It was on WSM 650, Saturday. It had the words Roll On Big River Roll On. I think I would like having that in my collection to play. I do enjoy seeing the titles displayed on my HD Radio, since when stations when play a long set I would usually miss the name of the artist/group playing a song. Though many new songs sound the same to me... Charles

DWIGHT COOK [Shotgun] (Houston, TX) Hello Jim, your newsletter is great! I wanted to pass along that I have found social media both beneficial and addictive. I have made a number of great contacts and know breaking news before it is announced on TV. The new social media seems a waste of time at first blush but it is the new way to stay connected and market. It’s all about relationships, as your network members transparently share something about themselves personally you build relationships. Studies indicate that many thirty and twenty somethings do not trust anyone till they have credibility through relationships. I help clients with social media and I would love to connect with my radio friends: (

JERRY MILLER [Mueller] (Houston, TX)
Times haven't changed much in Washington DC in over 100 years. Witness this quote from Teddy Roosevelt! "When the roll is called in the US Senate, the Senators aren't quite sure how to reply..."Present!" or " Not Guilty!"

P.J. O'ROURKE (November 14, 1947-p) If you think health care is expensive now, Wait until you see what it costs when it's free!
