ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

CLEAR CHANNEL CUTS DEEPER
Newspapers tell us that we can expect 7% or about 1,500 Clear Channel Radio employees leave the buildings across America but the figure is much greater. CCR says that 9% or a total of 1,850 lay-offs nationwide saves about $350-$400 million. The Cincinnati, OH Enquirer's John Kiesewetter reports the first of Clear Channel Radio's lay-offs in his city. Among the first to leave the CCR building in Cincy are: Jenni Buzzkill Huss on WEBN FM (102.7); Scott Springer 18-year sports reporter on WLW-700; WCKY-1530: Adam Campbell production, Tommy Lueggers producer and Perry Schiable reporter. Chuck Fredrick, CCR Cincinnati market manager, who supervises six Clear Channel stations in the city has no response. Jenni Huss: I've been preparing for this since November. With the economy the way it is, I couldn't expect anything else. Everyone is laying off. Perry Schiable:There are layoffs everywhere. Not a lot of people are hiring. Scott Springer confirmes he is gone but has no further comment. This is the Clear Channel story throughout America. Also gone is Gabe Hobbs, CCR SVP/News/Talk/Sports programming, with base in Tampa, FL. CCR owns six radio stations here in Houston, TX: News-Talk KTRH-740, Sports KBME-790, News-Talk KPRC-950, KKRW FM (93.7), KTBZ FM (94.5) and KODA FM (99.1) but does not mention cuts in any of these properties. Many program directors lose their jobs. No word on how many sales positions disappear. Rumors suggest that Clear Channel might eliminate local program hosts in favor of syndication. In a companywide e-mail, Clear Channel CEO, Mark Mays, cites an unprecedented time of distress in the general economy when he announces the elimination of 1,850 jobs. Clear Channel Radio talks to Allaccess.com about programming and music decisions and centralization: There is no absolute approach. Clear Channel Radio is focused on delivering the best and biggest audience to our advertisers. We have no room for low performers. The banker Mays brothers do not lose their jobs like 1,850 others at CCR but CEO Mark Mays and President/CFO Randall Mays do agree to cuts in their base pay plus potential bonuses. JRRR sends our best wishes to CCR folks who lose their jobs in these trying times.

WMA SIGNS RICE

Just a short time after the inauguration of President Barack Obama, the now former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice puts herself in the capable hands of The William Morris Agency to do book and lecture tours and whatever else pops up. Jim Wiatt, WMA Chairman/CEO, says: It is an honor to represent Secretary Rice as she prepares to embark on the next chapter of her incredible career. She is a cultural force, and we look forward to assisting her in her ongoing philanthropic initiatives in education and women’s empowerment. Ex-President George W. Bush first appoints Condoleezza as National Security Advisor and later promotes her to Secretary of State in early 2005. As we well know, Hillary Clinton is the new Secretary of State under the new President Obama.

BLAKE LINDSAY (D/FW-Addison, TX)
Jim, I hope your better health has returned and that 2009 is at least half as fine as your enjoyable column is for me to read. You seem to know where to grab lots of interesting news. Every since I purchased talking software for the Blind called JAWS, I read lots each day, and try to stay up on as many current events as possible. This is the first year I can recall in my adult lifetime, that I am thrilled to not be in radio, aside from my voice talent audio production contributions. Rough stuff to take, with all of these lay offs. A failing CBS DFW station called Movin' 107.5 cut two talented people within the past month, due to BC's as you refer to them. My friend Lisa Thomas worked with Mix for fourteen and a half years and was cut out this week from Clear Channel along with the other approximately 1,850 others. The interesting phenomenon to me is that I still enjoy reading up on broadcasting and love to review all of the fond memories with the great people I have befriended because of my chosen radio career. Your column has been very instrumental in reuniting dozens of us Jim and we owe you big. Talk with you soon. Your Friend, Blake Lindsay

JAY PENNINGTON (San Antonio-Boerne, TX)
Jim, You are absolutely correct about no JRRR mention in my site. That was an oversight on my part. My apologies! Your mentions of my site have contributed to the reunion of KEXL fans and jocks and I greatly appreciate that! If you go to my site now near the top just under the poster image you will see a short paragraph about your site with links
www.penningtontechnicalarts.com/KEXL Yes, I correspond with David A. Doerr and met him at Nick's memorial. David is a very nice fellow. Actually as I'm working through Nick's reel tapes I had one tape that let out an ongoing squeal that you could hear externally - like a machine problem. I emailed David Doerr about it thinking he probably had run across this before which he had. According to David: "...over the years the tape has absorbed humidity into the magnetic oxide coating on the polymer backing and it has gotten "sticky"...literally! That's why it squeals as it passes across the head. The tape has to be "baked" at a certain temp for a certain time to release the humidity from the tape and restore it to its former self (for about two weeks) which is long enough to duplicate it." Jim, thanks for giving me some more history on Nick. I appreciate that! Take care! Jay

DALLAS RADIO VET Jim Lawrence has a great book about how old-time DJs return music on the radio to what it once is plus a few mis-adventures. A good read.

JIM LAWRENCE (Dallas, TX) That's much appreciated, Jim. Here's one link that should get them there, although the book description on Amazon frankly isn't very good:
www.amazon.com/Station-Break-James-Lawrence/dp/0738807192 This longer blurb from the original publisher is a lot better: "One last hurrah, spinning old rock tunes. A way to be remembered. That's all pioneer DJ Jimmy Robbins and friends have in mind when they hijack their old radio studios for a true "oldies weekend." But a ruthless politician calls in SWAT teams, and the aging jocks find themselves waging a PR battle in the world media spotlight. While only words fly, they hold their own. But when bullets fly, they must make a quick decision about their future -- and their pride. STATION BREAK is a lighthearted look at a gang of bumbling has-beens, desperate to create a legacy before signing off for the final time." p.s. -- This link to the electronic version has a better description, and anyone with a Kindle reader can download the book for a little over six bucks -- a much better deal: www.amazon.com/Station-Break/dp/B001OI33JC If you have trouble with the link, just let me know. Thanks, Jim

Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#604-31) January 05, 2008 [Monday] RE: 1/5 JRRR Trivia; I have always heard that Harry Nilsson, who hit #1 with song. "Without You," never appeared in a concert or tour in support of his records! Any truth to that rumor? (B. Harry Nelson 6/15/41 & D. 1/15/94 @ 52 according to my files, & made charts about 8 times, 1969-74. Just an interesting observation to pass along. Best to you & Tejas for 2009. BOB & Sonny Lee.
