ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
DIGITAL SWITCH DELAYS
There is great anticipation about our government's proclamation of a nationwide flip-flop to digital broadcast TV signals. Over 10 years ago I purchase a brand new RCA 32" TV that brings a lot of enjoyment. But with the legislative branches' mandatory shift to digital broadcast TV signals it soon becomes obsolete. However, some of us who receive cable TV do not notice any difference. But those of us who depend on outside TV antennas are up a creek without a paddle. Our TV screens go blank or scratchy unless we buy new TV antennas or the $40 and higher digital boxes to hook up to our sets. Big Brother offers to pay $40 of the cost of that new box if we call the 800 number. This I do awhile back but some of us cannot just rush over to buy that black box. That $40 certificate's 30 day limit runs out too quick. Reports say that 2.6 million requests for the $40 subsidy coupons for those black boxes still remain unused. The price of a new digital flat screen LCD HDTV costs upwards of $700 and as high as the price of a good used car. The plasma versions cost even more, plus the plasma TVs burn more energy. Well, Glory be! In the goodness of their hearts Big Brother postpones that deadline four months from February 17, 2009 to June 12th. Then what?

DAVE LEWIS (Harrisburg, PA) Occasionally when I turned the dial from the Big T I would listen to KILT, KONO and WFAA (I remember when I was on duty at night listening to a guy on that station, I think his name was Don Norman? had a dry sense of humor) and B Bailey Brown on KONO. I was fortunate to have an email chat with him about a year before he passed away...but KTSA was and is my all time favorite. Locally I usually listen to WRVV which they tout as rock and roll without the hard edge--I like 80's music mostly and they will have blocks of time playing 80's music, WLAN which is basically a Top 40 format--current hits is another station I listen to...oh, there is a local station WHP 580 AM which is talk format, the afternoon host, Bob Durgin was a news guy on KNOW way back in the day,,,the Texas connection still lives in Harrisburg PA. I would imagine that I signed on through the Web column, I have noticed recently getting 2 or more copies of the same issue, so the direct link would be the way to go. Anyways Jim that is my story, I said I enjoy the issues and look forward on receiving them. Hope you have a great day too! Dave
JIM DE YONG (San Luis Obispo, CA) Subject: How far? Jim: I'm not in radio (anymore) and I'm not in Texas (never was), but I still enjoy your website. You've been asking where we read JRRR for months. I'm in San Luis Obispo, California. But I'd like to know where your other readers are. Most are in Texas, I assume, but I would imagine they're scattered far and wide. Tell us the results of your survey. Regards, Jim deYong
JRRR has subscribers and contributors from present and former broadcasters, music and radio fans all over Houston, TX, the entire state of TX, most of of the USA, Canada, Europe and Japan. In 2008, according to Alexa Web site reporting, JRRR receives an average of just under 3 million hits each month. That boggles our mind.
C.C. MCCARTNEY (Nashville-Hendersonville, TN) Good to hear from you old friend! It's been plenty cold here, and my farm near the KY border, it was minus 2 real temp! I'm not that dedicated anymore. It was my honor to get you to the legends party, you after all are a legend! CC (www.ccmccartney.com)
WHERE DO YOU READ JRRR? Tell us how far away from Houston, TX that you read JRRR. Send your full name, city, state and country of residence to rosekkkj@earthlink.net.
GUY ZAPOLEON (Houston-Katy, Tx) Hey Jim, Great to hear from you Jim. Hope all is good. Guy
KEN SRALLA (Iraq & McAllen, TX) Jim; With the new President and administration there is talk about going back to the fairness doctrine as it was in the earlier days of radio. I would be interested in seeing some comments on this. It could affect talk radio to some degree?
GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX) Last night Penny and I watched the new Fox TV program called "Lie To Me". It was very well done and the acting was great. The subject of the show had devoted his life to the study of body language and facial expressions to tell if someone was lying. The show is based on scientific experiments and it all seemed very believeable. This fellow could not be fooled. Where in **** was he when Obama was making his campaign speeches?
TRIVIA ANSWER: Around Christmas 1956, Fats Domino's Blueberry Hill peaks at #2 for 3 weeks on the Pop chart, #1 on the R&B chart for 8 weeks and sells over a half million copies. At the 29th annual Grammy Awards show in February 1987 Fats Domino's Blueberry Hill inducts into the NARAS Hall of Fame. In 1940, Glen Miller's Big Band with vocals by Ray Eberle also strikes #2 with the catchy song. The songwriter originally pens the tune for Gene Autry to sing in the movie The Singing Hill.
BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) RE: JRRR issue #613, 1/26/09; I knew Hoyt Axton (1938-1999) from DJ meetings; he wrote "Joy To The World" & many more, plus was an actor in several movies along with Bonanza TV series. He even started his own Jeremiah record label in 1978. I knew his mother, Mae Axton, much better when she was the personal manager of Opry star, Hank Snow (1914-1999) back in the 50's. Mae Axton, a beloved songwriter in Nashville (1914-1997) co-wrote Presley's first RCA hit, "Heartbreak Hotel." Your newsletter never fails to bring back some great memories! BOB & Sonny Lee.
BOB DYLAN (May 24, 1941-p) Take care of all your memories. For you cannot relive them.
