ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
FAIRNESS IS UNFAIR
U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) suggess on Thursday, February 5, 2009 that the Senate will hold hearings in 2009 on what she calls the imbalance of political Talk radio. These words cause many responses from radio broadcast pros. Harve Alan, veteran Program Director, asks, Should it be the role of the federal government to insist that, if a station owner has a conservative Talk station they must also have a liberal one? Simply stated, no matter what your personal politics, we do not need or want the government to start making programming decisions. Jim Bohannon, Westwood One talk show host, replies, I can’t wait to watch Senator Stabenow enforce structural balance by requiring NPR affiliates to carry Michael Savage.

DREAMWORKS LEAVES UNIVERSAL
The race is on for DreamWorks to find another distributor to replace Universal Pictures. Just four months ago a deal comes about but later falls apart. Steven Spielberg and Stacey Snider who own DreamWorks are now close on a deal with Disney. This should help the embattled DreamWorks raise its mezzanine funds.

LEE ANDERSON (McAlester, OK) I keep seeing posts from George Lester. Just wondering if he is the same George Lester that was with KTSA in the early 60's. I was one of the weekend DJ's on KBER when it first went on the air and remember him making a record or 2. Lee Anderson

WALTER HAMMOCK (Houston, TX) Sheldon "Kappy" Kaplan passed away this morning. He had a stroke a couple of weeks ago and never really mad it back. Kappy hired me to do my first paid voice over back in 72 when I had just come to Houston and was working at KLYX on the SW Freeway. Kappy was in his 80's and we should all pray to grow old as graciously and gracefully as he did. RIP and I will miss the old buzzard. Sweet, sweet man I owe him much I could never repay.
DR. JEFF CUNNINGHAM (Austin-Kyle, TX) Jim: Just a note to let you know that my best friend, Cady the cat, passed away yesterday at the age of 16 1/2. She had cancer and there was nothing that could be done. My daughter and I are both devastated by the loss and I know you know how I feel. I just wanted to let you know to hug on Tejas every day. Jeff Cunningham, DC (www.zoesplaceclinic.com) (www.myspace.com/drjeffcunningham)
GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX) I had forgotten all about Mike Wolverton. Even now only the name rings a bell. I can't place a face to the name to save my neck. Jerry Franklin was the newsman I worked with in AM drive at KBER. Something just came to me as I am writing. I seem to recall his Bohemian type family. I think he invited my wife and me to spend an evening with them one time and they were strange people. He asked me if I would like a beer and I said yes. He poured me one small glass and put the bottle back in the refrigerator and that was it for the night. I was a real beer drinker then and that one glass of beer was worse than none. It just made me want more. Still, I might have the name mixed up with the person I have just described. Please tell me more about Mike Wolverton. George

BOB CROWLEY (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Subject: One you can use. I had a really nice visit with Mason Williams the other night. I did a phone interview which I intend to edit and play on my Saturday morning news block on WBAP 820 AM, possibly this Saturday 1/24, probably at 7:45 am. We talked about Classical Gas, the Smothers Brothers, Roger Williams, John Hartford, the 'Them Poems' and his current endeavors. He still plays in Oregon, and within the last year made a trip to a gig in the Woodlands, which is in your area. He was very nice, and very sharp. He's an all time favorite of mine, especially the 'Tomato Vendetta' from the 5-song DaDa Trilogy, and his poem about censorship that closed the Smothers Brothers show, about how they leave you with "A Doily For Your Mind." Turns out he's a Texas boy, born in Abeline, and he attented U.N.T. when it was NTSU. Bob
MIKE CANNON (Houston-Woodlands, TX) Hey Jim, It was my pleasure. Thanks for the opportunity, I enjoyed our visit. And thanks for the info on Akitas as well. Tejas is certainly a beautiful and friendly girl. I can see why you are so crazy about her. Mike Cannon, Director of Broadcast Operations, Houston Astros Baseball Club
DAVID PERKINS (D/FW, TX) We were talking about the two Ron Rices Saturday. One, the one you knew was Ronald Lee Rice. He is now deceased. The one I know is Ronald Leon Rice. How close can you get. For years I thought the Ron Rice in Dallas had "stolen" the Ron Rice in Ft. Worth/Houston real name. But radio does play tricks on your senses. I'll give Ron your JRRR. Thought I had before but anyway, I'll do it again. How you gonna get all this chatter between us in your sheet? Ah, you're a good writer. You'll figure it out. The other Ron Rice's daughter is on the air? Where? That's kind of interesting. TRIVIA ANSWER: Elvis Presley has two best men at his wedding, Joe Esposito and Marty Lacker.
DAN MCCURDY [Charlie & Harrington, Charlie Brown, Dan Patrick] (Sherman, TX) Jim...your quote from Ralph Nader reminded me of one of similar stripe I heard many years ago: "We will have solar energy as soon as the utility companies solve one technical problem: how to run a sunbeam through a meter." Anon. Best to you, Jim... Dan McCurdy Sherman, TX
