STRAIT WINS FIRST GRAMMY
One of the best-selling singers in Country music history has no Grammy Award. That is until Sunday night, February 8, 2009 on CBS TV. George Strait's album Troubadour wins the Best Country award. This is one of four of George's nominations at the awards show. Troubadour also is the Country Music Association’s album of the year. George's career covers almost three decades. He sells more than 62 million albums, plus male vocalist of the year five times by both the Academy of Country Music and the CMA. Strait also inducts into the Country Music Hall of Fame. George has more #1s than any other solo artist. In April 2009, the ACM honors George Strait as the Artist of the Decade. Salute!

DR. JEFF CUNNINGHAM (Austin-Kyle, TX) Jim: I think I remember Marcos from my days at KXOL. The guy he was talking about who was training him was Rocky Davis. He was a really nice fellow that was a loyal Tom Turner employee. In fact, he was about as loyal as it gets in radio. Harrell Banks did not have the authority to fire Rocky. You talk about a solid employee, this guy had it made. In my months there, he was never late, never in a bad mood and never disloyal to his listeners. In that day and time for KXOL, that is MONSTER credibility. I lasted the summer of 77 then went to Texarkana. Jeff Cunningham, DC Kyle, TX (www.zoesplaceclinic.com) (www.myspace.com/drjeffcunningham)
DON LOGAN (Shreveport-Benton, LA) Jim - Thank you for the plug in the newsletter. I was amazed when I heard from the son of Homer Odom who according to George Carlin's book, helped him get hired for his gig up east. The writer of the new book on Carlin is from the Boston area and sometimes writes for the Globe. Odom's son checks your newsletter from time to time and was overjoyed at seeing his dad's name in your tip-sheet. When I was contacted by the writer, there was some confusion between Don LOGAN and Homer ODOM, both of us having worked the Shreveport market. So, I told him I would try and help him find the real Homer Odom. I was sorry to hear from the son that Homer passed away some time back. But when Sullivan talks to the son, it will finally be corrected and down on paper. THANKS for what you do Jim! Sullivan will probably give you a plug in his book too. Visit my web-site: www.dandydonlogan.com NEW CD - SONG ABOUT DRY PRONG to be released early 2009! - Read a complete chapter on Dandy Don in the new book, Shreveport In Black and White.
GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX) Jim, I think of the other DJs I worked with and how well they have done since leaving radio. Re: Bob Sinclair had his own ad agency (now retired). Ricci Ware owned several race tracks and other interest. Big Daddy Glenn Dean had his advertising agency, recording studios and, according to his son, he is the founder of Country Music Television (CMT) network. I'm sure there are many more who have done just as well that I am not aware of. I've had a lot of fun. George Lester
BOB CROWLEY (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Indeed, it was David searching for KEXL that led him to JRRR and my e-mail address. He dropped me a line, which I picked up on. I sat on the CD for a couple of months, before tracking down Bobby Reyes. My first shot was to find another KEXL alum, Debbie Jecker, which led me to Carol Sowa, through the musicians association in S.A. I'm glad that Carol and Bobby are in the JRRR group, because they are good people, and have always treated me like gold. I treasure the other link-ups we've made, from Chapman Mott to Nick St. John. I hope there are many more to come. I'm just glad I still have a position in this screwy business. Bob
MIKE HARTMAN (Ft. Worth-Joshua, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#606-47) January 09, 2009 [Friday] Hey Jim...I hope your New Year got off to a great start. I just had to throw in this joke, after reading George Lester's "Striking A Medium". A woman was putting gas in her car, when she accidentally spilled some on her arm. After she finished she drove off, thoroughly disgusted over what had happened. Not thinking, she lit up a cigarette, which then ignited the gas on her arm. She thought quick, rolled her window down, stuck her arm out, and began waving it, trying to put the fire out. A policeman pulled her over and...you guessed it...wrote her up for the "Illegal use of a fire arm". Jim, with a joke like that, I better stick to singing. Take care, and give TEJAS a pat on the head for me. Mike
RAY WHITWORTH (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Hi Jim: On the "Buddy Holly"story our mutual friend Bud Buschardt was the music consultant for the movie and he has some classic tales about it. I along with Mike Shannon interviewed him on the "Hi -Fi Club" on KMNY Sunday nights at 6pm a year ago. The grumblings in Dallas with George and Laura moving in "There for sure goes the neighborhood" and "First he goofs up the economy, now the traffic". Have a good one Ray
