TEJAS AND I WISH YOU A HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!

ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

TODAY IS FRIDAY THE 13TH
Many times radio and TV stations and businesses feature Friday the 13th as a special day for big sales and sometimes special events. We do not have Friday the 13th very often. Superstitions about Friday the 13th are that it's a day of good or bad luck. The fear of Friday the 13th has a name, paraskavedekatriaphobia, that comes from the Greek words Paraskeví (
Παρασκευή) which means Friday, dekatreís (δεκατρείς) that stands for thirteen and phobía (φοβία) which symbolizes fear. This is a form of triskaidekaphobia which is a simple phobia (fear) of the number thirteen also known as friggatriskaidekaphobia. Sounds like a bunch of big words that our new president might use to tantalize his cult of followers. Most of us believe that Friday the 13th is just a day for us to look forward to an enjoyable weekend. We do hope that you have a safe, successful and wonderful Friday the 13th.

DTV DELAY
America's new president signs
a bill that extends TV's switch to digital broadcasts from February 17, 2009 to June 12th. But almost 40% of the TV stations still want the early DTV date. Millions of us viewers in the USA are still not ready for America's switch to digital TV. But over 500 full-power TV stations across the land prepare to go ahead and drop traditional over-the-air broadcasts on Tuesday, February 17th. The FCC tells us that 190 TV stations already stop analog service or they plan to do so before the original magic date. Plus another 491 TV stations plan to go digital early. But they have to wait for the FCC's green light to proceed.

LEE ANDERSON (McAlester, OK) We had ice last week here...was 17 this morning..but lots of sun right now warming up..now 36...I keep seeing posts from George Lester. Just wondering if he is the same George Lester that was with KTSA in the early 60's. I was one of the weekend DJ's on KBER when it first went on the air. I did Sat and Sun Mornings on KBER and remember him making a record or 2. He called me a few times trying to get me to play his record. I don't remember if we ever played it or not...slept too many times since then. I guess i need to e mail him. You are doing a great service to radio..keep up the good work. Lee

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX)
Molly Bee, the Oklahoma teen country singer from the 50's, has died @ 69 in Oceanside, CA. Cause not listed, but she had been reported in bad health for months. Molly first sang @ 10 on Rex Allen's radio show in Phoenix & later had her own show on KCNA, Tucson. At age 13, she hit the charts in 1952 with the novelty song,"I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus," also a hit for 12 year old Jimmy Boyd. Molly later appeared on KXLA & KLAC-TV, Los Angeles, & made tours with Bob Hope. She also made one film with Gene Autry, "Tennessee Tango." I had the great opportunity to interview Molly Bee, along with Jerry Colonna (1904-1986) & Bob Hope (1903-2003) all at the same time on WTVT-TV, Tampa about Oct.,1958. (I had met them earlier at the Ohio State Fair!). Col. Robert Hanger

MOLLY BEE is born Molly Gene Beachboard on August 18, 1939 in Oklahoma City, OK. She grows up in Tennessee and Arizona before her family moves to Los Angeles when she is 11. During her career she appears in several movies and records popular records like her 1952 hit I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus. Only 9 years old at the time but I remember the tune as if it is just yesterday. Where I remember Molly Bee the most is when she plays Pinky Lee's sidekick on The Pinky Lee Show which is one of our favorite TV children's programs in the Fabulous Fifties. Actress Beverly Washburn tells the AP, She just had this kind of down-home quality about her. There was nothing phony about her, it was all real, and everyone loved her. Molly's manager, Rick Saphire, tells the AP that she dies at 69 on Saturday, February 7, 2009 at an Oceanside, CA hospital after she suffers a stroke. Difficult to believe that Molly Bee plus our other favorite sho-biz personalities from our lifetimes are no longer with us. Paul McCartney's hit tune When I'm 64 comes to mind almost all the time but in my case flip the 64 to a 65.

TRIVIA ANSWER: Pop singer Leslie Gore plays Pussycat in two episodes of the 1960s Batman TV series.

DR. JEFF CUNNINGHAM (Austin-Kyle, TX)
Jim: I think I remember Marcos from my days at KXOL. The guy he was talking about who was training him was Rocky Davis. He was a really nice fellow that was a loyal Tom Turner employee. In fact, he was about as loyal as it gets in radio. Harrell Banks did not have the authority to fire Rocky. You talk about a solid employee, this guy had it made. In my months there, he was never late, never in a bad mood and never disloyal to his listeners. In that day and time for KXOL, that is MONSTER credibility. I lasted the summer of 77 then went to Texarkana where I could make a HUGE sum of money: $600 a month. Jeff Cunningham, DC Kyle, TX (

MIKE HARTMAN (Ft. Worth-Joshua, TX)
Hey Jim...Ii touched my heart when I read about Jeff Cunningham's cat dying. Late last month my Chihuahua, Peanut, died. He was given to my dad in May or June of 1995. He was just a puppy. Dad passed away in January of 2000. I had Peanut longer than he did. Everytime I would visit dad, Peanut would bark and bark...until I got inside and seated. He did this so many times I started calling him "**** Dog". The name stuck...up until the day he died. But, that name didn't affect the love I had for him. I made an 8x10 enlargement of a good picture I took of Peanut, and it sits on a table right next to my recliner where he used to jump up in my lap. I miss him a lot. Give Tejas a big hug and a pat for me. If you don't mind, up-date me on your health situation. Later. Mike

BIOPSY
That is what the urologist calls what he and his cute nurse perform on my prostate on Tuesday, February 10, 2009. Have at least three words to describe the project: Ouch! Ouch! Ouch! But what the check out clerk says hurts even worse: $100! Appears that my Medicare HMO is close to no insurance at all.

GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX)
Dear Jim, I just read Mike Hartman's joke about illegal use of a fire arm and...HA HA HA (Stopping to breath) HA HA HA (Passing out from lack of oxygen) HA HA HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA (thud!!!) Sincerely, George Lester
