PLANE CRASH KILLS MANGIONE BAND MEMBERS
The tragic Continental Flight 3407 airplane crash on Friday, February 12, 2009 near Buffalo, NY takes the lives of two members of Jazz great Chuck Mangione's band. Gerry Niewood plays both sax and flute with Mangione since the early 70s. Also with Liza Minnelli, Grover Washington Jr, Patti Austin and Simon and Garfunkel. Guitarist Coleman Mellett joins Chuck's band in 1998. Chuck Mangione's Web site opens with these words, I'm in shock over the horrible, heartbreaking tragedy of the crash of Flight 3407 which took the lives of my dear friends and band members Gerry Niewood and Coleman Mellett. I am grieving and praying with their families and friends. That's all I can say for now. (

AR TV NEWS GOES 1 HOUR
KTHV-TV CH11 Gannett CBS affiliate in Little Rock, AR begins a full hour-long newscast from 6-7 pm. Larry Audas, KTHV TV President/GM, says that it debuts the new half-hour extended newscast on April 6, 2009. He justifies the move to draw viewers who return home late from work. Audas clarifies, We've developed some very strong news content and an excellent following in the area, and we look forward to offering them a 6:30 pm newscast. Larry says this is not a repeat of the 6 pm newscast. He also insists that KTHV TV does not mimic a new hour-long 7 pm newscast on competitor KARZ-TV CH42. No mention if KTHV TV adds personnel for this additional 30 minute newscast. Recently Gannett asks all non-contract employees to take 1 week of unpaid leave during Q1 as part of a companywide mandate.

LEN HART (Geneva, Switzerland) Jim, I returned to the Odessa area and when Paul Lancaster (Roger Collins) departed for Phoenix (eventually San Francisco) I programmed KBZB radio --again! My second tour of duty. Fast forward --KIKK was my first Houston radio station. I did Afternoon Drive news for Joe Ladd, already a legend. His face was on KIKK billboards all over town. The year was 1973. KIKK AM and FM were still in the old building, which, as I recall, was just west of the only tall building in Pasadena. I remember Harvey T very well. The FM control room was in the same building, upstairs, down the hall near the back door. One day, I looked into the AM control room and saw Larry Gatlin hanging out with Ladd. Gatlin saw me and came into the news room. We got caught up. After playing football for the Houston cougars, Gatlin had made his way to Nashvillle and **** near starved to death. Somehow, he met up with Kris Kristofferson and Rita Coolidge whom he credited with having opened some doors for him. He told me that he owed them a lot. This was not the arrogant ******* that some had thought him to be back in Odessa. The kid had grown up. Gatlin can be heard on the Kris and Rita LP --"Jesus Was a Capricorn". The cut "Help Me" is Gatlin. Hope this is some help. Sincerely, Len (

DADE MOORE (Houston-Aldine, TX) Subject: WDDT? Jim, What were you talking about in your paper a while back with WDDT Radio in 2008? A lot of those people were my family members and are now dead. See www.wddt.com also see greenville mississipi. http://members.cox.net/brsmith6/greenville2.html I worked there with two other people John Cook and Frank Childs and came back home in the 80's to Houston to work at www.93q.fm John Cook's father was the Late Jay Cook who also started at wddt in the 1950's was the president of 93Q KKBQ Houston. Gee I wonder how our young little butts got our jobs? Funny. Dade see google around 9/10/08 (www.google.com/custom?domains=www.angelfireradio.com&client=pub-9997537522266483&forid=1&ie=ISO-8859-1&oe=ISO-8859-1&cof=GALT%3A#008000%3BGL%3A1%3BDIV%3A#336699%3BVLC%3A663399%3BAH%3Acenter%3BBGC%3AFFFFFF%3BLBGC%3A336699%3BALC%3A0000FF%3BLC%3A0000FF%3BT%3A000000%3BGFNT%3A0000FF%3BGIMP%3A0000FF%3BLH%3A50%3BLW%3A367%3BL%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.angelfire.fm%2Fsfg.gif%3BS%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2F%3BFORID%3A1&hl=en&q=wddt+radio&sitesearch=) (www.dade.cc) (www.angelfireradio.com) (www.rockandroll.fm)
JRRR Issue #555 September 12, 2008 [Friday] has an email from Dr. Bruce Nelson with information about WDDT-900 in Greenville, MS. In JRRR Issue #558 September 19, 2008 [Friday] Jim Spurlock responds about WDDT-900. Here's what I know about WDDT-900. Its last format is Gospel Connection. WDDT-900's technical status: currently off the air; AM station hours of operation unlimited; antenna mode non-directional - 1 pattern; daytime power 1000 watts; nighttime power 109 watts.
DR. BRUCE NELSON (Corpus Christi, TX) Subject: WDDT? Jim, I e-mailed Dade thru his web site and never heard back. But I have several top 40 surveys from the Delta Democrat Times. I worked at WDDT shortly after getting out of the Army and then moved on to WTUP in Tupelo. The Delta Democrat Times was a very liberal paper in favor of integration and the radio station being affiliated with the newspaper used to get a bomb threat every now an then from the Klan but we took it i stride and joked about it. I was the PD under the name of "Phil Harmonic" and the rest of the line-up was Varnell Lee Mid-days and Larry Dee 3pm to sign off (no night time power at the time) Jimmy Carr was on the sales staff at the time and John Gibson over saw radio and the newspaper. The station and newspaper were housed in the same building at the time and Hodding Carter who was to be part of Jimmy Carters' administration (I think) was just a kid who loved to hang out with us jocks...Dr Bruce
BARRY KAYE (Mason-Art, TX) Hey Dude, Didn't sell my ranch. I had 3 lots on the golf and city park here in Mason. I still live at the ranch in Art, Texas. I might be moving to Houston in a couple of months. Hope all is well. Will get in touch and come visit when I get to Houston. BK
DR. JEFF CUNNINGHAM (Austin-Kyle, TX) Jim: Rocky Davis was a wildman. Hauled gas by day, jocked at night. I don't know when and if he slept, but he never seemed to have a bad day. He was always nice to me, but I never really knew him personally. He actually came into the studio wearing his Shamrock gas-hauling clothes every night that I was there. I have trouble staying awake in a movie, even when I know Anne Hathaway is going to get nekkid. This guy was amazing. TRIVIA ANSWER: Janis Ian reads an article about a debutante in the New York Times which inspires her to write her hit At Seventeen. The song rises to #3 in the summer of 1975 and remains on the Billboard chart for 20 weeks.
DAVID PERKINS (Fort Worth, TX) Jimbo. I'll remember to ask them to contact you in the future if they'd like to be added to your wonderful letter. Actually the Ron Rice on KBUY and KPRC is not related to the Ron Rice on KBOX (I didn't know him.) But strange as it seems that is both their real names not airnames. You'll have to ask Ron (in Sugarland) if he and the other Ron Rice ever met. You and Tejas take it easy, breezy. Like a fried catfish on a blue plate special, you're lookin' good, kid! David
GEORGE PEPPARD (October 1, 1928-May 8, 1994) I love it when a plan comes together. (as Col. John Hannibal Smith in NBC TV's The A-Team from January 23, 1983 to December 30, 1986)
