ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

ROCK STAR IS MISSING
On August 1, 2008 singer Gerry Rafferty leaves St Thomas Hospital in London after treatment for liver disease but no one sees him for at least 6 months. His friends fear for his safety. The last information that we have is that he checks into a hotel after he leaves all of his belongings at the hospital. The 61-year-old Scottish born Rafferty has a bad case of liver failure and is in constant need of medical attention. In the mid 1960s, Gerry's first band is The Humblebums but they find no success. We remember that in 1972 Rafferty forms Stealers Wheel and has a huge hit with Stuck In The Middle With You. The tune also finds its way in the movie Reservoir Dogs. In 1978, Gerry has his biggest album City To City that features the classic hit Baker Street. The album sells 5.5 million copies. A missing persons report is on file but his whereabouts remain unknown. Our prayers are that Gerry Rafferty returns safely.

MILEY NOT SMILEY
TMZ Alerts reports that a Los Angeles woman files a class action suit against teen idol Miley Cyrus that claims she mocks Asians in a recent photo when she slants her eyes. Price tag: $4 billion. Miley is the daughter of Country singer Billy Ray Cyrus who gives us that unforgetable 1992 hit Achy Breaky Heart which lands at #1 on the Country charts and crosses over to Billboard's Pop survey at #4.

EMAILS YES WE HAVE EMAIL

JIM DE YONG (San Luis Obispo,CA) I'm at the same email address I've always had. Do I need to do something to get the "non-skeleton" version or will that be done automatically now that we've communicated? Now go to bed, man, it's late in Texas.

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX)
Just read on-line Huntington, WVA Herald Dispatch of death of my ole friend, Odey Crabtree in San Antonio on Feb. 13, 2009. Can you get me some details or obit from Express-News? His wife, Helen wrote me over Xmas holidays about his sad state of health. Just asked Glen Daniels if he could likewise get me some info. Appreciate your help, as I knew you would know facts. Many thanks, BOB & Sonny Lee.

DEAN DANIELS (Dallas-Lewisville, TX) Hi Jim, Odey Crabtree passed away on Friday Feb. 13th. Odey was 72 years old. He had an illustrious career in radio and television including hosting a morning television show in Huntington, WV for several years in the 60's before moving to San Antonio, TX and joining the sales team at KBUC radio. Odey left KBUC to form Mark VII Advertising Agency with my father Glenn Daniels in 1972. Odey grew that business into a successful player in the SA agency business, eventually branching out into full production and editing. Odey "retired" a few years ago and called San Antonio his home for over 30 years. The funeral will be Thursday, Feb. 19th. Dean

ODEY CRABTREE
is on the sales staff while I am Program Director/Music Director/PM Drive DJ on KBUC FM-AM in 1970 in San Antonio, TX. Dean's dad Big Daddy Glen Dean Daniels is our AM Drive air personality. We are very good friends. Odey is a fine tribute to all who are in radio ad sales. A real fine guy with a great personality. So very sad to hear of his passing. Once again, when one reaches the age of 65 as I do on November 16, 2008 we lose so many of our friends. Our prayers go out to Odey's family in this urgent time of need. On Tuesday, February 10, 2009 I have a biopsy to determine if I have a prostate cancer. Do not wish a biopsy on my worst enemies. On Tuesday, February 17th I return to the urologist for the results. The proud doctor enters my room with a huge smile on his face when he proclaims there is no cancer.

BILLY THORMAN (Ft. Worth, TX)

Jim, Fond memories when Molly Bee came to Houston in 1974 to work one of her records (Right or left at Oak Street) We went out to the old Vagabond club (where I had a Wednesday gig) to do some drinking & smoozing and she drank me under the table. MIKE SHANNON (Dallas-Mesquite, TX) The KBOX Ron Rice (Ronald Lee Rice) you all are thinking of was killed on Friday, August 17, 1973 in a head-on collision in Dallas, off Park Lane just east of Preston Rd. He was just 33 and left behind a wife and five daughters. Ron was living in Wills Point, TX (about 35 miles east of Dallas) and was a native of Memphis, TN. At the time of his death, he was an account executive at KRLD-AM in Dallas, and had started there in February, 1973. He was an announcer and later program director at KBOX, and worked there from 1964-72. The Country Music Association chose Ron as Music Director of the Year in 1971 for his work at KBOX. TRIVIA ANSWER:
The captain of Elvis Presley's airplane Hound Dog 2 is Milo High.

GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX)
In 1954, I didn't know that Jimmy Burton ever recorded as a solo artist back in those days. I will see if I can find anything on Google and buy one of his CDs. Jimmy was featured big in the PBS special "Elvis Live" . They show Elvis on a big TV screen while his original band and backup singers played live along with Elvis' singing on tape. I recorded it and I hope I can find it and watch it again. I'd lose my *** if there was a way. Yes, I know what you mean about pushy people wanting you to play someone's record. I once played a record of a local artist and one of his girl friends who hadn't even listened to the station called up and gave me.....for "not" playing it. I told him to take care of her or I would never play it again. Even after he told her the stupid....wouldn't give up and kept insisting that I hadn't played it and it was a lot better than the other records I was playing. There was a local artist in Houston that had a mild hit but his next record was crappy and no one would play it so he went to Marvin Zindler about it. Marvin didn't know about radio or the music business and made some stupid remark about "everybody deserves a chance at a start" as a recording artist. Of course, you don't get a "start" with a....record.
