ROCK LEGEND DIES
The bass player for Electric Light Orchestra, Kelly Groucutt, dies at 63 on Thursday, February 19, 2009 of a heart attack. ELO ranks near the top of my favorite Rock bands. All ELO tunes are crowning points in my memories especially Telephone Line and Evil Woman. In 1974, Kelly joins the band for the Eldorado tour. He debuts on the 1975 album Face the Music. Groucutt sings lead on several of their songs that include The Diary of Horace Wimp, Nightrider and Poker. In 1982, he releases his solo album Kelly. In 1983 he remains with ELO for one more album, Secret Messages. Kelly leaves ELO because of what he considers to be unfair royalty distribution. Groucutt sues ELO team mate Jeff Lynne and settles for £300,000. In later years, Kelly is a member of ELO similarities; OrKestra, ELO Part 2 and The Orchestra. Kelly Groucutt’s survivors include his second wife Anna-Maria Bialaga, four children and two grandchildren.

CLEAR CHANNEL SHAKES, RATTLES AND ROLLS HOUSTON
According to the Houston Business Journal Clear Channel Communications shakes up its Houston radio stations again. Michael Berry, Operations Director of CC Radio Houston’s AM stations, says that on March 2, 2009 Houston stand-up comic Chris Baker returns to KPRC-950 in the 3 to 5 pm slot. Joe Pags Pagliarulo moves to mornings, 6 to 9 am. John Walton and Steve Johnson, KPRC morning team, move over to KKRW FM (The Arrow 93.7). After 12 years on KKRW, morning radio team Dean and Rog leap over to Cox Radio KHTC FM (107.5). Dean Myers and Roger Beaty’s new KHTC morning show begins 5 to 10 am M-F on June 1st. Their newsperson, Suzi Hanks, joins Scott Sparks on the KHTC morning show. When Dean and Rog get to KHTC in June, Scott moves to PM Drive. Col. St. James tells us on Friday that he goes back to his 7p-midnight spot on KKRW on Monday, February 23, 2009. In 2005, Clear Channel releases Roula Christie and Ryan Chase from KHMX FM (Mix 96.5). Popular morning man Sam Malone vacates cross town KRBE FM (104.1) to go to KHMX. In the merry-go-round world of radio Christie and Chase head to KRBE for the morning show. Then in October 2008 Clear Channel releases Sam Malone. Clear Channel thinks that it has to sell KHMX FM as part of a federal mandate for it to go private. What happens is that Clear Channel swaps KHMX FM and KLOL FM (Mega 101.1) to CBS Radio. After the dust settles Clear Channel ends up with Houston radio stations KTRH-740, KBME-790, KPRC-950, KKRW FM (93.7), KTBZ FM (94.5) and KODA FM (99.1).

JAY WEAVER (D/FW-Hurst, TX) I enjoyed your story about Jerry Lee Lewis, I think the guy has been under rated for years because his of his temperamental manner. No argument from me that he is the greatest piano player that ever played country music - probably most any music. When you hear him play, you know it's him. My wife and I started going to see Jerry Lee in 1966 when he would appear at Panther Hall in Fort Worth about once every two months. We continued going to see him - never missing a date until the early 70's. We believe we hold the world record on the "Number of times to see Jerry Lee live". When he took his first break, Rhonda and I would go backstage to the dressing room and visit with him at every appearance he made. He used always tell her how beautiful she was and give her a hug. She loved it and he knew I didn't mind. He has been and still is my all time favorite performer. I hope you don't mind me sharing my Jerry Lee story with you.
MIKE MARSHALL (Houston, TX) Jim, the mention of the "other" Ron Rice reminds me. I was doing 7-midnight at WFAA clear channel 820 in Dallas where you and I worked together briefly and I had a call from Buddy Holiday, then the PD of KPRC radio. He said he had an afternoon drive slot opening and I (had) been recommended to him by Bill Enis, who was Sports Director at KPRC-TV. Bill had been my PD when we were at KFJZ in Fort Worth, my home town, in 1964-65. I sent a couple of tapes and at Buddy's invitation drove down to Houston one Sunday afternoon for a job interview. He hired me and I started 4-7 on Labor Day weekend, 1969, delighted to finally get off nights and work afternoon drive. Since KIKK-AM signed off at sundown, KPRC figured they could pick up the country audience, so Charlie Brown (David Perkins) and Ron Rice played C&W from 7 till Tim and Bob came on in the early morning. That lasted for about six months. When they decided to let David go, Buddy offered me two choices: I could move from 4-7 to his 7-midnight shift, or I could leave. Since I had just moved my new family to Houston, I chose the job. Buddy was fired a bit after that, replaced by Buzz Lawrence from Denver, who fired everybody, including Bob Presley who later went on the become Sales Manager for KILT AM/FM. I was told by Buzz that, after two audition tapes and ten months of doing a radio show on his station, The Colonel, Jack Harris, "didn't like my voice" Tim and Bob stayed, who were, I assumed, indispensable and I believe Ron also survived on the all night show. Not long after that Ron tried his hand at running a retail store, selling TVs and I wound up selling consumer electronics for Home Entertainment, later acquired by Tweeter of Boston. Glad to hear your good medical news and thanks for keeping us up on the radio news. Mike Marshall, Houston
RON RICE times two in TX radio only about 300 miles apart is mighty confusing. From 1971-72 I'm a newscaster on the then Country KBOX-1480 and E-Z Listening KTLC FM in my hometown Dallas under the legendary Joe Long who has a magnificent voice. His son, John Long, who lives in Detroit, MI subscribes to JRRR and is an occasional contributor. The Dallas Ron Rice, who remains on KBOX-1480 after its switch from Top 40 to Country is the PD during my time there. In 1973, I apply to John Barger for a newscaster position on KRLD-1080. As I head to my car to leave I see Ron Rice who gets out of his car in the parking area. He is on the KRLD-1080 sales staff at the time. Not long after that, Ron dies in a head-on car collision on Park Lane over near KBOX-1480 where we once are behind the mic. How about that?
TRIVIA ANSWER: Soul singer Sam Cooke turns down Travelin' Man which becomes a #1 hit for Ricky Nelson in 1961 and sells over a half million copies.
DAN MCCURDY (Sherman, TX) Hey, Jim...may I add my CONGRATS to all the others on your wonderful good news about your potential health challenge...see? prayer and healing thoughts really DO positively affect the outcome of threats to our health. Miracles happen every day, and your healthy results are certainly your Miracle to claim and give thanks for. Like St. Paul admonished us, "Pray without ceasing..." I Thessalonians 5:17...again, wonderful, wonderful news, Jim... And more good news in the form of president B. Hussein Obama, who has publicly stated that he is not in favor of reinstating the 'Unfairness Doctrine'...plus, however, 'Piranha' Pelosi and several other Democrat socialists want to exhume the monster, when it would be best for all concerned if the unworkable beast remains entombed in radio's 'Crypt of Infamy' until the twelfth of never... Again...my best, my friend and continued blessings for your life and health. Dan McCurdy - Charlie Brown, Dan Patrick: KLIF, KBOX-Dallas; WMEX-Boston; inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame 2004. "The lion and the lamb will lie down together. But the lamb won't get much sleep." - Woody Allen
