ONE OF RADIO'S REALLY GOOD GUYS LEAVES US
On Wednesday night, February 25, 2009 I receive a shocking email from Gary Stelly owner-GM of KOGT-1600 in Orange, TX. Gary says that my good friend Rex Boehme dies at 65 at his home in Orange. He uses the air name Rex Russell. This leaves me totally speechless. The southeast TX city of Orange, about 100 miles east of Houston on I-10, is part of The Golden Triangle that also includes Beaumont and Port Arthur. In 1964, Rex and I are classmates at Elkins Institute of Radio in my hometown Dallas, TX. At the time he already is behind the mic on KBEC-1390 in the Dallas suburb town of Waxahachie. During intermissions at our Elkins class he turns me on to the Ramsey Lewis Trio Jazz group. Rex has just about all of their record albums. In 1968, when I leave WFAA-820 and WFAA-570 in Dallas, Charlie Van hires Rex as my on the air replacement. He soon becomes Production Director. Do not find this out until 2006 when Rex mentions it. During my long radio career all over TX, Rex Boehme is at the top of my list of radio's really good guys. Our prayers go out to Rex's family and friends. View a recent photo of Rex and read what Gary Stelly writes about Rex Boehme in the KOGT-1600 Web site: (www.kogt.com/)

GARY STELLY [Owner/GM of KOGT-1600] (Orange, TX) Jim, Wanted to let you know that longtime DJ Rex Russell passed away today. He was 65. I’ll send you our write up after I’m through writing it. I assume you knew him because he is the one who turned me on to your site. Gary Stelly, KOGT Radio
REX RUSSELL'S DEATH comes as a complete shock. Gary fills us in on more details.
GARY STELLY (Orange, TX) Gary Stelly Jim, Unfortunately it is. He’s always at the station by 8:30 and when he wasn’t there by 845 I knew something was wrong. Just didn’t know what until we broke into his apartment. He was just sitting in his recliner watching a movie. Nothing suspicious but we ordered an autopsy anyway. The strange thing is that he had just received a good report from his doctor last week. Gary
BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) Subject: JRRR Issue #626, 2/25; May be of interest that my files show Dennis Linde, writer of Presley's hit, "Burning Love" was born in Abilene, TX, raised in San Angelo & died @ 63 on 12/22/2006. Also, I wonder if John Cigna, mentioned in your KDKA story, is not the same John Cigna who was a DJ at WOWO powerhouse, Ft.Wayne, Ind in late 50's when I visited that station..Issue #625, 2/23 mentions fact that singer Sam Cooke turned down the Rick Nelson song,"Travelin Man." I was pleased to have worked as M/C on shows with the great Sam Cooke, both in Tampa & Richmond. I treasure those memories & retain his pic/autographs with me. We also lost another Texas recording artist this month. Albert "Buck" Griffin, born Corsicana on 2/23/23 was a singer/guitarist/songwriter/DJ as Chuck Wyman/& recording artist from about 1954. Previously inducted into Rockabilly HOF, he died in Sayre, OK on 2/14/2009. He is remembered for recording,"It Don'T Make No Nevermind" & "One Day After Payday," & had worked with Red Foley & Marty Robbins & once had a show on WKY. Your JRRR always inspires great memories & news. BOB & Sonny Lee

DADE MOORE (Houston-Aldine, TX) Subject: WDDT? Jim, By the way John Gibson 90 years old is still alive. The old engineer PErcy is still alive. We put Jim Karr to rest last year. I was the main person at the services. That was uncle Jimmy. Dan Diamond from what i know passed away and Others like myself, Rob Grason, and Wayne Bennette on the front page are alive and well. Charlie Ross is still back in greenville at wdms 100.7 doing morings. Sorry about the typos, I am going down the Houston I-45 freeway. Dade (www.dade.cc) (www.angelfireradio.com) (www.rockandroll.fm)
CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) Hi, Here is a clip that was sent to me by Mike Wade. That I thought you would like also. I went and found me a new HT that I like using a Yaseu RX7R, receives .5 - 999 MHz and will transmit with 5 watts on 6 meters, 2 meters, 70 cm, and .3 watts on 220 if needed. Also it allows me to listen on one frequency while talking on a different one. Not as thrilling as working at a 50 KW station but still fun to talk with others. Now I think I will go play my Green Tambourine... Charles, KC5RAI
TRIVIA ANSWER: Lucille Ball attempts to get Elvis Presley to appear on her 1971 TV show but CBS refuses to pay his talent fee.
GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX) While I was working at KDBC in Mansfield, Louisiana I organized a live country stage show called the De Soto Jamboree after our parrish. We featured local talent who had dreams of moving up to the big time. A few weeks after the show started one of our performer introduced me to a 15 year old guitar player from Shreveport. He asked me if I would let him go on stage. I was a bit reluctant but I took a chance. The kid really brought the house down and he become a regular after that. He later went to perform on the Louisiana Hayride and then his career really took off. He played lead guitar for Ricky Nelson, The Everly Brothers, and The Beach boys among others and he also appeared on the Sonny and Cher TV show. The real jewel in his crown was when Elvis Presley asked him to join his touring band. They stayed together for years. Today he is considered to be among the all time great guitarist. His name is Jimmy Burton.
CESARE PAVESE (1908-1950) We do not remember days, we remember moments. The richness of life lies in memories we have forgotten.
