FORMER BILLBOARD MUSIC CRITIC EXPIRES
Mike McGeever former Billboard, Music Monitor and Music & Media radio editor dies at 48 after a heart attack. During the 1990s Mike is the radio editor of Billboard trade magazines Music Monitor and Music & Media in London, England. He returns home to Pottsville, PA as project manager of Schuylkill Community Action in the city. McGeever also hosts a weekly radio show on Classic Rock WPAM-1450 (The Phoenix). Jon Heasman, Ofcom Manager of Commercial Radio Licensing, who works with Mike at Billboard and Music and Media, affirms: Mike was genuinely loved by all who knew him. He was a very warm, incredibly generous man who – above all – possessed an enormous sense of fun. He was a great journalist and, with his experiences drawn from both sides of the Atlantic, he was also a real authority on music radio, which was a medium he loved.

KPTY FM [formerly KQBU FM] (Party 93.3) Univision Rhythmic Party Port Arthur, TX returns to its Que Buena Regional Mexican format that ends in 2007. The Party format seems to bounce around the Houston, TX radio dial like jumping beans. In 1999 it's a part-time format on KRTX FM (100.7). Then it moves to KPTY FM [now KAMA FM] (104.9) Houston-Deer Park, TX with a simulcast in the Galveston area on KPTI FM (105.3) Crystal Beach, TX. Its final destination is FM 93.3 in December 2007.

CHUCK CASHMERE (San Diego, CA) Hi Jim, I was catching up on some of your old columns. I'm sorry to read about Molly Bee. I was hired to do the TV commercials for a local Chevrolet dealership back in the seventies. The jingle was Dial Dial Dial Chevrolet, 11980 E. Firestone, Dial Chevrolet. I think it was designed to be a local commercial because I never heard it while in any other location. The singer was Molly Bee. The owner of the dealership was so proud he was able to hire Molly Bee to do his Jingle. The jingle became familiar in the LA area and people would come on the lot frequently singing, kids and adults alike. I think we met one time...but it's been ages ago. Regarding Jimmy Boyd...lots of stories. He actually had the major hit back in the fifties of "Kissing Santa Claus," and sold millions. I worked with him at three different dealerships over the years....and when I returned to radio at KNUZ and KQUE interviewed him on the air around Christmas time. I caught up with him at one of the old dealerships. When we worked together we were competitors for customers but he was cordial. Never had the opportunity to see him perform but some of the other guys did and said he was a natural. I asked him why he didn't tour because even in those days singles with a name, could make a good living. His answer was for personnel reasons. Strange I would run across his name in your column because just the other day at the movies something triggered a remembrance of that era. Keep up the good work.

GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX)
Subject: Ernie Ashworth. During my brief radio time in Nashville I saw a story on the news about a bunch of houses that sat in the right of way where a new freeway would be built. Some contractor had bought up all the houses and was selling them to be moved. Ernie Ashworth was being interviewed about how he had paid for one of those houses but the contractor was dragging his feet about moving them and time was growing short. I left Nashville before I found out what happened. After I got back to Houston Ernie called KIKK to promote his new single. During the conversation I asked him about the house. He said he never did get that house and he lost everything he put into it. That was over 30 years ago and I had almost forgotten about it until I read the sad news about his passing. Bless him. He was one of the real nice guys in the business and I would like to send my condolences to his family.

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) A friend and I went to lunch Wednesday, she gave a CD, Pete Seeger at 89. I hope I am still around in good health at 89. I think what do youngsters have to look forward to? I still remember hearing a person doing a show on the radio with his ukulele. MBS with Fulton Lewis III. The HD radio I bought at Radio Shack was on sale for $100. They have more than one model mine is from Accuran. They go on sale from time to time with discounts mine was discounted but not as much as I have seen them. The FM is superb, I can hear KTCU 88.7 which I can't get on any other radio; however; the AM section... Let’s says my G.E. Superadio II does a much superior job. I find NBC sound ID is great when I need to tune my guitar: G E C. 73, Charles, KC5RAI

TRIVIA ANSWER: Vince Gill is lead singer with popular 1970s-80s Country-Rock group Pure Prairie League from 1979-83 (Let Me Love You Tonight #10-1980).

GARY DELAUNE (San Antonio, TX)
Hey Jimbo; I notice that some of JRRR readers are rather vehement in their opinions about ideology. I don't know about anyone else but I have had to resort to taking my teaching calls five days a week now since I have lost over half of my retirement money since the election....who is at fault? I don't give a hanging chad damn who maybe the culprit but after doing 36 football and basketball games on radio, the Bruce and Gary program and teaching almost full time, and am told I may have to share what I make with someone who hasn't worked at all, I certainly can't blame it on Ronald Reagan. I don't worry about more taxes for anyone over $250,000; I'm just worried about taking care of the basics without draining from what money I have left. I would be a rich man just collecting on taxes owed by some of the current members of the cabinet and other nominees. But as Barney Frank might say..."watch out...the government might pick your pocket...unless I get there first....and stay awhile"...GD

DR. JEFF CUNNINGHAM (Austin-Kyle, TX) Jim: I don't think Dan McCurdy is over the election. Neither is the stock market. Jeff Cunningham, DC Kyle, TX (

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX)
Think about this: COWS - Is it just me, or does anyone else find it amazing that during the mad cow epidemic our government could track a single cow, born in Canada almost three years ago, right to the stall where she slept in the state of Washington? And, they tracked her calves to their stalls. But they are unable to locate 11 million illegal aliens wandering around our country. Maybe we should give each of them a cow. THE CONSTITUTION - They keep talking about drafting a Constitution for Iraq. Why don't we just give them ours? It was written by a lot of really smart guys, it has worked for over 200 years, and we're not using it anymore. THE 10 COMMANDMENTS - The real reason that we can't have the Ten Commandments posted in a courthouse is this -- you cannot post 'Thou Shalt Not Steal' 'Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery' and 'Thou Shall Not Lie' in a building full of lawyers, judges and politicians. It creates a hostile work environment. It is time for America to speak up! Yep, I passed it on!

FREDERIC BASTIAT (1801-1850) Everyone wants to live at the expense of the state. They forget that the state lives at the expense of everyone.
