MONKEE HAS CANCER
Peter Tork, a former member of 1960s Pop group the Monkees, admits that he has a rare form of head and neck cancer, but he says the diagnosis is good. Tork who is 67-years-old has surgery on Wednesday, March 4, 2009 in NYC. Peter's spokeswoman announces that he does well. He begins radiation treatment after he has a short time-out. Tork's Web site says on Tuesday that his diagnosis is adenoid cystic carcinoma on the lower region of his tongue. Peter tells us that it's an uncommon but slow-growing type of cancer. We fondly remember the Monkees popular TV show from 1966 to 1968. The group has three #1 hit tunes that we Monkees fans go around singing all the time: Last Train to Clarksville, I'm a Believer and Daydream Believer. We pray for Peter Tork's complete and successful recovery.

TV AXE FALLS IN GOTHEM CITY
Batman to the rescue! Tribune Broadcasting WPIX TV CH11 fires five of their off-camera staff as part of the big B-C. The ones who leave the building include a producer who works with Larry Hoff correspondent for PIX Morning News, three writers plus someone on the assignment desk. A WPIX TV spokesperson declares This action comes as media companies across the country are cutting expenses to cope with rising costs and changes in advertising revenue and is a reflection of the current harsh economic business climate. The news comes as no surprise because WPIX TV parent company Tribune files bankruptcy. Tribune Broadcasting's Washington, D.C. bureau, that feeds news out of our nation's capital to TV stations around the USA that also includes CH11, shut down their offices this week. At 2009 begins, CH 11 cuts veteran sportscaster Sal Marchiano. Newsroom managers find it tough to put together newscasts with their budgets cut way back while TV ad revenue falls. Other TV markets find the going tough, as the giants struggle with their budgets. WCBS TV CH2 flagship station of the CBS television network with studios in NYC drops sportscasters Ducis Rodgers and John Discepolo. WNBC TV CH4 flagship station of the NBC television network with studios at 30 Rockefeller Center in Manhattan drops experienced on-air vets Jay DeDapper, Carolyn Gusoff, Carol Anne Riddell, Otis Livingston, Sally Anne Mosey, Monica Morales and Kendra Farn. WNYW TV CH5 Fox 5 News flagship station of the News Corporation's Fox Broadcasting Company lets anchor Rick Folbaum go, plus two off-camera staff members. On February 27, 2009 Univision eliminates 300 jobs nationwide that includes a handful at Spanish language WXTV TV CH41 with an FCC license for Paterson, NJ that serves NYC. Univision also cancels the weekend editions of its newscast Primer Impacto. The present economy truly does have a premier impact on America's TV stations.

SHELBY SINGLETON first comes to life in the tiny east Texas town of Waskom which is about 20 miles east of the county seat, Marshall, on HWY 80/I20 near the Louisiana border. In the late 1960s, Shelby revives Sun records label with so many of our favorite Oldies recording artists we enjoy so much like Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and others. Plus Singleton has his new Plantation record label with brand new artists. Can remember way back in 1968 as Program Director/Music Director of KBUC FM-AM in San Antonio, TX when we sign to a concert someone who has an instant hit Harper Valley PTA on Shelby's Plantation records, Jeannie C. Riley. We get Jeannie's name on the dotted line before she becomes a major hit herself. After her performance, the KBUC GM counts out eight $100 bills and hands them to Jeannie. This really brightens up her eyes. But by that time she probably gets $8000 or more for appearances. What a deal!
SHELBY SINGLETON (Nashville, TN) Jim- Those were the great days in the music business- We are on to new and better things- Hope you are well- I am ok for a 77 year old- Best, Shelby
GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX) In 1954 and 1955 while I worked at KDBC in Mansfield, Louisiana I often visited back stage at the Louisiana Hayride in Shreveport. One Saturday night I saw a young fellow dressed in a sport coat with slacks and shod in white buck shoes. All the other performers wore embroidered suits studded with rhinestones so he stood out like a sore thumb. I inquired about him from one of the artist's managers. He told me he was a new kid from Memphis. He called him over and introduced us. That was the first time I heard the name Elvis Presley. I was impressed with how polite and unassuming he was. That night as Elvis took the stage the place went berserk. I stood in awe as he captivated the audience completely. I turned to the fellow who had introduced us and expressed my opinion that this young fellow had a tremendous future in the business. He replied that it was all done with smoke and mirrors and his records would never sell because he had no talent. When I saw the artist manager many months later he was having a heaping helping of crow.
DAVID PERKINS (D/FW, TX) Subject: KBUY reunion. Tell you a DJ story. I had been fired by Roy Lemons at KBUY and was hired by Jack Gardiner on KBOX doing fill-in and Sunday mornings on the air and also worked for them full-time as production director. I was going by "David Perkins." I never did care for "Charlie Brown" but Lemons had cut station jingles at KBUY before hiring me and the next jock hired would be "Charlie Brown." Well, Fort Worth is my hometown and I wanted the job, so... Anyway, Bo (Powell) was PD at KPCN and would have an engineer come in Sunday mornings and run recorded segues from a DJ between songs. Bo asked me if I would record some segues for him for the engineer to play. I did it as "Charlie Brown." So, here I am for a while before being hired on at KPRC Houston, on KBOX Sundays as "David Perkins" and my cross-town rival was none other than "Charlie Brown" on KPCN. Radio does some funny things! TRIVIA ANSWER: In 1976 Eric Clapton writes the song Wonderful Tonight for his wife Patti while he waits for her to get ready for a party with hosts Paul and Linda McCartney.
BOB CROWLEY (D/FW-Arlington, TX) More bad news from the employment front. Word came today that KLBJ's Steve Pickering was one of those let go in the latest round of cuts at Emmis Communications. Steve was an all-around utility guy for the news department, covering all the beats and doing what needed done. He's a good guy, and would make an excellent addition to anyone's radio news staff. Hearing about these layoffs reminds me of that scene in Memphis Belle, when "Mother and Country" is cut in half, and as it tumbles down, the radio transmissions fade away. As you observe in horror from your own B-17, you realize, that could have been me.
GENERAL NORMAN SCHWARTZKOPF (August 22, 1934-p) I believe that forgiving them is God's function. OUR job is to arrange the meeting.
