IT'S ANOTHER FRIDAY THE THIRTEENTH - PARASKAVEDEKATRIAPHOBIA!

ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

CHILD STAR PERISHES
Some of us may be too young to remember the 1952 Classic Christmas tune I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus by child singing star Jimmy Boyd but as a 9-year-old I recall it like only yesterday. His Christmas novelty tune shoots straight to the top of Billboard 3 weeks after it releases. It sells 2 million copies in less than 10 weeks. Sad to say that Jimmy Boyd passes away at 70 of cancer on Saturday, March 7, 2009 in Santa Monica, CA. In 1960, he marries actress Yvonne Craig whom he meets during his role in the 1960 Bing Crosby film High Time. We recall that Yvonne is Batgirl in the 1960s TV series Batman. Jimmy makes TV appearances on The Frank Sinatra Show, The Ed Sullivan Show, Bachelor Father and Date with the Angels. Boyd drafts into the Army, performs in USO shows in Vietnam and tours America in his own music and comedy show. Jimmy becomes an avid sailor. He lives for years on the Southern California coast on a sailboat that he names Unplugged. Jimmy Boyd's survivors include his 28 year old son Devon James Boyd.

TOM ASWELL (Denham Springs, LA) Jim, Frogman also has another pretty good song in (I Don't Know Why) But I Do that was featured in the soundtrack of Forrest Gump. If you have that photo of you and jerry lee, I'd love to publish it in my next book. The next one will deal with the following: Louisiana independent recording studios (and some Texas ones like Sugarland); Louisiana independent record labels; Louisiana record producers; Louisiana radio stations (will also spill over into Texas because of the Gordon McClendon ownership of KEEL in Shreveport. I am scheduled to come over to Winnie to interview Huey Meaux and would love to extend the trip to Houston to have a sit-down with you and capture some of your memories for this book. I want the radio section to be very thorough and complete. Because you started in Louisiana and worked for McClendon, I'd welcome your contributions. Also, if you can get the word out, I'd love to talk to some other deejays like Don Couser, Bill Young, and any others who would like to share their memories of radio when it was radio and when it was relevant before it's too late to capture that wonderful nostalgia. I'm counting on you to get the word out for me on both books. Let me know when would be a good time for me to visit. tom

RAY WHITWORTH (D/FW-Arlington, TX)
Well Jim, Bob Crowley was cut from WBAP. What a bunch of $#$#@. Citadel stock is at $! 00 as of today. Small wonder with decisions like this. WBAP has a proud history of being a news station, and with moves like this that's what it will be "history". Dan McCurdy and his rants about an election that took place 5 months ago, reminds me of my son many years ago when he asked why he had to be in at 10'oclock. Oh the rant! Ray

BOB CROWLEY (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Jim, As my previous message indicated, I was informed this morning that my 'Relationship with WBAP has been severed'. I've been in this business since 1971. I've been fired, let go, canned, terminated and thrown under the bus. This is the first time I've been 'Severed'. It feels about the same. I've already heard from quite a few people who have offered sympathy, support and help. That is a comfort. I was at WBAP for more than 4 years, worked 7 days a week, more newscasts than any other anchor, created more news stories for the story file than any reporter, did the National Forecast for the Midnight Radio Network, provided a nightly news summary and additional stories for Westwood One's Metro Networks, did stringer reports for ABC News and I worked closely with the WFAA-TV newsroom to gather overnight and weekend news stories, also did a few reports for the BBC and the Irish R-T-E. It was a good run. I got in my licks, also did night watchman rounds, recorded weather reports for the telephone weather line, fixed KSCS and KPMS automation systems when they crashed, contributed a weekly blog and daily news stories to the WBAP website and took out the trash. I kept busy. Now I'm going to keep busy looking for a new gig. I'll keep you posted. Bob

LYNN WOOLLEY (Temple-Killeen-Ft. Hood, TX) Jim, I am devastated to hear of so many of my friends being laid off. I hired Steve Pickering at KTEM and launched him on his rise to KTRH and KLBJ. He is a great reporter. I worked with Bob Crowley when I was anchoring the morning drive news block at KVET, and now I see that he is gone from WBAP. I wish these guys the best, but in today's world, jobs are not easy to find. By the way, I did a segment of "Lou Dobbs Tonight" on CNN last night. It was fun. We did the uplink from Austin and my producer is pulling cuts for my daily syndicated show. I'm now running on KVCE/Dallas, KSEV/Houston, KTEM/Temple-Killeen-Fort Hood, KBRA/Freer, KWBC/ Navasota, KCRS/Midland-Odessa, and KBW/Waco. Ratings are good and calls are extremely heavy since Obama won the election. Regarding politics on JRRR -- radio is joined at the hip with politics. We have our beloved FCC with its cadre of idiots. And now we have a Congress and White House that will not be friendly to free speech. Rahm Emanuel even invented a little distraction about Rush Limbaugh running the Republican Party. On the other hand, while my radio show is overtly about such things, and draws a huge audience from them, you have to decide what you want JRRR to be. Maybe it should be about "remembering" rather than current events. I personally, don't mind the mix. I just want to keep radio with us as long as we can. It will not be here forever. Lynn Woolley (

TRIVIA ANSWER:
In October 2000, Pop singer George Michael pays more than $2 million for John Lennon's piano that he uses to write his Classic tune Imagine.

J.C. (Joyce) WEBSTER (Mena, AR)
Subject: Dan McCurdy. Hey there Jim! Just read Jim McCurdy's latest. Like what he has to say or hate what he has to say...he does have the courage of his convictions! In a time when it seems most people are afraid of offending pretty much anyone, I have to say, 'Bravo!' to a man who says it the way he sees it. I also have decided that I will change my status to Independent even though some of my reasons are different. The two parties have both failed at this point, and I strongly believe in the two-party system. I do feel, however, that it is time for this voter...whether my one vote matters or not...to follow my convictions, and I cannot with good conscience continue to follow party lines when neither represents me. I would love to be positive about the direction in which we are going, but I simply cannot be. It would be so nice to talk about pleasant things such as Spring being in the air, wouldn't it? JC

THOMAS JEFFERSON (April 13, 1743-July 4, 1826) To preserve independence we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. We must make our election between economy and liberty, or profusion and servitude.
