ENTERCOM PRESIDENT PRAISES RADIO
David Field, President/CEO of Entercom, says that, despite serious economic challenges, there is an increasingly positive emerging secular story for radio. David mentions the record number of radio listeners in 2008, plus the attractiveness of radio's price and product costs for advertisers. Entercom's net revenues fall 14% in 2008 Q4 from $120.1 million to $104.1 million. Entercom's station operating income is down 25%. 2008 net revenues off 6% from $468.4 million to $438.8 million. David Field feels like the downturn is just a temporary matter.

EASTWOOD IS NOT P-C
Movie star Clint Eastwood does not see anything that is funny about political correctness. Dirty Harry tells Germany's Der Spiegel magazine that today's society lives in fear of being labeled racist when we mention jokes with regards to ethnicity or nationality. People have lost their sense of humor. In former times we constantly made jokes about different races. You can only tell them today with one hand over your mouth otherwise you will be insulted as a racist. I find that ridiculous. In those earlier days every friendly clique had a 'Sam the Jew' or 'Jose the Mexican' -- but we didn't think anything of it or have a racist thought. It was normal that we made jokes based on our nationality or ethnicity. That was never a problem. I don't want to be politically correct. We're all spending too much time and energy trying to be politically correct about everything. Do I hear an Amen?

DON COUSER (San Antonio, TX) Hi Jim. Nice to hear from you. I've been retired from radio for about 3 years. I still hear from many of my friends from days gone by...especially those with whom I shared my experiences as their college instructor at San Antonio College (1968-1980). I can't figure out which I loved most...because everything I did was a special love from the heart. Being a rock jock in the 50's (KYBS & WACO) during the cutting edge of rock and roll, are incredibly great memories. Rubbing shoulders with recording artists, doing dance gigs, mcing r & r shows were special thrills. It's difficult to even explain the wonderful moments I spent at KONO (1962-1980) doing AM drive. I bounced out of bed at 4am with a smile on my face and an expectation of that days show with a deep desire to entertain my audience. God. It was so exciting! Hosting SWINGTIME was the most fun I ever had. Thanks to my producer, Mel Adcock, for 3 glorious years in TV. The advertising agency with my friend Basil Karcher (Karcher-Couser Adv) from 1969 to 1980 was fun filled and highly rewarding years. Ideas to fruition. Lesson about life. It helped me mold my character more than anything I did. My time with Clear Channel Communications (WOAI) as one of their managers (1984-2005 was the doorway to becoming financially independent. All I can say is, "I love my life". It's like reviewing one fantasy after another. I am now settled just N. of San Antonio on my small ranch. I am celebrating getting out of the goat business as I prepare for a new adventure in the Rocky Mountains, where two of my five children life. I want to spend some quality time with them and my grandchildren. My children are my greatest assets. I am most appreciative of the late George Stokes, my advisor during my days at Baylor University (1956-1960) who taught me how to use my creativity...and Bill Young, who was instrumental in kicking off my commercial radio career. I think often about creating my sidekick, "George the Duck"...and how He propelled my career. Just shows to go you. We all have to be a little weird. Onward and Upward. Don Couser
DAN MCCURDY (Sherman, TX) Thanks so much, Jim, for all you do for all of us radio-heads who are caught up in the sweet, spinning reverie of 'how it was.' Your Sherman friend... Dan McCurdy: Charlie Brown, Dan Patrick - KLIF, KBOX, Dallas; WMEX, Boston; 2004 inductee, the Texas Radio Hall of Fame
PAUL KELLY (Hemet, CA) I just read Bob Crowley’s last e-mail about him being severed at WBAP. I know the feeling Bob, and there is no way to say anything that would make you feel better, but I will try. It seems that the harder you work, the more you do, the less likely you are to keep a job in radio. It is sad, but oh so true. I have been in your shoes many times, but always when one door is slammed shut, another (much better) door is opened. Ask Jim Rose, he worked very hard, and was let go anyway. It is difficult to say why these things happen, but as I said before you will find another, better door. I hope it is very soon. Thank you for all the kind comments you made about me, I wish you well and God speed in finding that new opportunity.
BOB CROWLEY (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Comments are appreciated. Dial up is a pain, I know, cause I've got it too. Talking to a lot of people. Much love. Not much work, but it's early on. The resume is a work in progress. Bo Chase, my former morning partner in Austin, is going to help me put together a fresh demo. He's the best. More later. bc
GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX) Hello Mr. Rose, I just received this email from Bruce Nelson and I saw Barry Kilgore's name. I replaced him as production manager at KYND in Clear Lake City. He had suffered a heart attack and couldn't take the stress of the job anymore. After I took the job I found out why. Barry didn't do an air shift. Doing production was his sole job and that was enough. When the station went classical and became KRTS I did an air shift and did my production while the long classical pieces were playing. It was a real ordeal and I did it for almost three years. I think Barry has one of the best voices in the business and I am glad to see that he is still alive and kickin in spite of his heart attack. By the way, I had a heart attack in' 99 and then underwent angioplasty with a stint installed. My cardiologist gave me a clean bill of health about a year ago. Ironically, he died of cancer a few months later. He was a wonderful guy. If you have Barry's email address please tell him I said hello. George

DR. BRUCE NELSON (Corpus Christi, TX) Greetings from Nashville and the Country Radio Seminar. Last night the RCA folks took us out and wined & dined us aboard the paddle wheeler "Andrew Jackson" up and down the Cumberland river. While we dined we enjoyed the music of Kenny Chesney, Martina McBride, Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley. The surprise was a visit from John Kay w/Steppenwolf that performed "Born to Be Wild w/Montgomery Gentry and out walked Peter Frampton to jam with Brad Paisley. Quite a night. Dr. Bruce KFTX
