ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

TV PIONEER DIES
Thomas T. Goldsmith, Jr. a TV design pioneer with Allen B. DuMont who develops the cathode ray picture tube as well as its mass production dies at 99 on March 5, 2009 at his home in Lacey, WA. Thomas' initials live on as WTTG Fox TV CH5 Washington D.C. which the DuMont network once owns. DuMont has the first American TV sets on the market in 1938. How many of us remember the DuMont brand of TV sets in the Fabulous Fifties? A 1953 DuMont Newbury 21" inch console television set retails from $199.95. Those black-and-white TV screens bring moving images into millions of our homes. Dad buys us a brand new 17" Truetone table model TV set from Western Auto on Jefferson Avenue in the Oak Cliff section of Dallas, TX. We love to forget when the picture begins to flip or roll. How about those One Moment Please statements when the network shows turn to static. Network TV shows are live and spontaneous. We enjoy the exciting Red Skelton and Jackie Gleason TV shows each and every week. Fondly remember the very first I Love Lucy show, Gunsmoke with the real Matt Dillon, Have Gun Will Travel with Paladin. Critics announce the death of radio because the boob tube now takes over. But Gordon McLendon invents Top 40 radio with entertaining DJs on KLIF-1190 in Dallas, TX. This brings new life into our radios. Radio is once again at the crossroads. But like Gloria Gaynor sings we shall survive.

IMAN HAS CANCER!

Citadel flagship WABC-770 NYC ABC Radio Network syndicated Talk show host Don Imus tells his listeners on Monday morning, March 16, 2009 that he has stage II prostate cancer. The I-Man says he has confidence that his doctors can rid him of this malignancy that attacks men over the age of 50 and beyond. Prostate problems cause lots of pain, misery and much frustration. Have first hand knowledge of the subject. On this end I learn a lot about prostate problems through a series of exams and procedures as the nurse calls them that embarrass the boldest ones of us. To determine if a person has prostate cancer the last in the series of measures is a biopsy. This action is something that I do not want to undertake ever again. The urologist performs that modus operandi on me recently. Thank God it indicates that I do not have prostate cancer. But this is not so for Don Imus. Prostate cancer is serious business because its final event is fatal. We include Don Imus in our prayers that his carcinoma disappears into thin air with no further complications.

Just got back from the March 11th San Antonio DJ Radio Luncheon in San Antonio. Met up with a lot of old friends, and colleagues from back when! Bruce Hathaway, Don Couser, Mark Carrillo, Chrissie Murnin, Robert Reyes, Paul Kirby, Johnny Shannon, Liz Patranella, Tino Esquivel, Robert Sinclair, and oh so many more I guess there were about 27 that attended this year. Wish you could have made it too! Sure brought back a lot of memories of San Antonio Radio in its glory days. Dan Rosen Was kind enough to send an e-mail that was read at the luncheon, wish you could have made it Dan! Great hearing from you! Turned everybody on to jrrrr.

DON COUSER (San Antonio, TX)
I spent last Sunday evening with Ricci Ware and Bruce Hathaway. We were on the air for about 30 minutes...reliving comical days in our past competitive lives. I went up against Ricci in pm drive...and beat him in the ratings for the first time in his young life. It was such a rush to talk about those days lat Sunday on KTSA with him and Bruce. You, too. Have a super week...and keep up the good work. Hope we can hook up one of these days. don

RAY WHITWORTH (D/FW-Arlington, TX) HI JIM: It was great to read an email from Don Couser!!! He was my radio hero back in 1965 and his show influenced me to get into the business. Lo and behold he was my very first radio instructor at San Antonio College and in 1974 he gave me my first break doing a character voicer for his ad agency Karcher -Couser" for a "Village Casuals" spot. The man is class, so kind, so creative and very encouraging. I owed a lot to him to allow me to have a wonderful 35 year journey in the business. I am out now with a some voice work and I am now ( like he did) enjoying the educational career. Thanks Don..You made a difference!!! Ray Whitworth

GUY ZAPOLEON (Houston-Katy, TX) Yes I'd love that Jim. Sign Me up. Miss Houston sometimes, but that's the price you pay, Cathy's family is here in Mass and so am I. Yes radio is pretty crazy these days, my company is still working with quite a few broadcasters, more my partners than I, I'm pretty wrapped up in my music research company HitPredictor. Have a great one.

MIKE BRAUN (Fort Worth, TX)
Jim, Enjoy your newsletter. I was a DJ at KWTX-AM/FM, Waco, Texas, from 1975-1979. Another former announcer, Bill Castello, and I are compiling a history of KWTX and looking to reconnect with former employees and their "TX memories." Don't know exactly where all this will lead, but it's sure to be fun! Hoping some ol' staffers will read this and respond, plus pass the word along to others. Contact MikeBraun101@aol.com or Bill.Castello@baronservices.com. Thanks! Mike Braun; Fort Worth, Texas

BOB CROWLEY (D/FW-Arlington, TX) In the three hours since I sent my mass e-mail, I have received 17 replies. It's nice to know who your friends are. It's not a good time to be looking for work, but I am glad that I worked hard and treated people well. Hopefully a good reputation and a willing spirit can pull me through. I've already gotten notice on Radio Daily News, All Access and Radio and Records. I only had 3 hours sleep before the phone call came. I called the boss at Metro, and even though he was in his office, and heard the message, he chose to go to lunch rather than speak with me. He indicated I am being terminated by Metro. There was no discussion of seeing if any other station wanted to retain my services through their arrangements. Time to shake the dust off the sandals and move on. I'll keep you posted of any developments. Bob

TRIVIA ANSWER: John Lennon and Paul McCartney write I Want To Hold Your Hand in the basement of Paul's girlfriend, Jane Asher.

DAN MCCURDY (Sherman, TX) ...if the liberal 'Unfairness Doctrine' is re-applied, that's when 'Remembers Radio' will take on a whole new meaning. I was there when it was day-in-day-out in the mid-60's and it was **** on everybody at KLIF, from the control room, news room, production room to the traffic gals, to continuity writers to the receptionist out front. If Rush and the other talksters are zip-lipped due to powerful errant political action, that makes politics and radio 'real close' kissin' cuzzins. No one should have any question about it...it's your blog, Jimbo, and you've gotta do what you feel is the right thing to ensure its continuation and growing impact. But if radio is on the chopping block in any fashion, it's within your far-reaching power to mitigate, even help prevent the murder. My best, my friend... Dan McCurdy, Texas Radio Hall of Fame inductee 2004, KLIF, KBOX-Dallas, WMEX-Boston

GEORGE WASHINGTON (1732-1799) With a heart full of love and gratitude, I now take my leave of you.
