HOUSTON, TX TV LAYOFFS
All across America we feel the pinch of today's economic dire straits. Businesses cut their advertising budgets when they should increase them. The broadcast industry is hit hard by the loss of business advertising. Radio stations drastically cut their staffs. Television stations are the latest to join the crowd of tight budgets. On January 20, 2009 Belo announces that it lays off 500 of its staff. On February 28, 2009 Belo Houston, TX CBS affiliate KHOU TV CH11 veteran morning traffic anchor Darby Douglas is one of the first of the lay-offs to leave the building. Darby is KHOU TV traffic anchor from 1997-2009. In March 2009 CH11 releases more than a half dozen of its employees. Among the departures are 26 year KHOU vet Carleton Cole (sports producer), Ava Smith (sports producer), Don Graham (director of local programming and production) and others. On March 23, 1953 KHOU TV originally signs on as KGUL TV (as in Gulf or as in seaGull) with an FCC license for Galveston, TX. KHOU is the second Houston area TV station after KPRC TV. Movie actor James Stewart is one of the original investors in KGUL TV along with a small group of other Galveston investors. In June 1959, KGUL TV flips its call letters to KHOU and moves the city of license from Galveston to Houston. On April 20, 1960 KHOU TV relocates its studios to its present location near downtown Houston on Allen Parkway. Other owners include Whitney Corporation (later Corinthian Broadcasting) of Indianapolis, IN which becomes a subsidiary of Dun & Bradstreet in 1971. In 1984, D&B sells all of the Corinthian stations to its present owner A.H. Belo. When Hurricane Ike strikes Houston-Galveston on the weekend of September 12-14, 2008, KHOU's coverage goes nationwide by way of DirecTV and XM Satellite Radio as well as a live feed on KHOU TV's website.

WBEB FM PROTESTS NEW MUSIC ROYALTY RATES
In March 2007, the Copyright Royalty Board sharply increases its music royalty rates. SoundExchange and the NAB negotiate lower rates for broadcast streamers, but the rates continue to increase through 2015. WBEB FM (B101) Philadelphia. PA pulls its streams to protest new music royalties. WBEB FM owner Jerry Lee affirms, The excessive SoundExchange rates don't work for artists, for local radio stations, or for listeners. Many stations, including mine, won't be able to afford to stream music. Less streaming means fewer revenue opportunities for stations and ultimately less money for the artists who receive royalties. It's puzzling why SoundExchange would want to destroy a potential growth business opportunity for the artists it purports to represent. Lee estimates that by 2015 almost half of the revenue from WBEB FM streams goes to SoundExchange in royalties.

ROB RICHIE (Madison, WI) Hello Jim: I am really sorry to bother you, but for decades I have been searching for what might be just a South Texas song, The Last Song by Roy Orbison. The lyrics are easily available online but that is all I can find. I remember hearing it at Strange's Bar B Que party house, back in 1962 in San Antonio, when Big Bearded Bruce Hathaway played it to finish the dance. "And this song, will be our song, and this song, will be our song, and the last song for me" is the ending. Being that you are familiar with South Texas radio I thought as a long shot I'd ask. Those were great days in San Antonio. I grew up playing in a Band, with Augie Myers and Doug Sham, and others, The Galaxies with Jimmy Lane was also one of them. So many times I would talk with the DJ's Ricci Ware, Phil Baby Simms, Bruce Hathaway. We were always busy playing at Ft. Sam and the other bases officer's clubs, bar mitzvahs, battle of the bands with Sam Kinsey, etc. Great times. Sucks to be old now. Anyway, if you can help in any way. I am desperate to find this recording or copy of it and will pay dearly. So, thank you for any help you might be able to give. Also if the song was only released on a single, or an LP, and if so, which LP. If single only, the label would be great to know. Take care. Rob Richie

BILLY THORMAN (Ft. Worth, TX) Glad to see and hear from Don Couser! What an awesome, Dude! Killer Jock, Superstar Instructor! It was an honor to work with him at KONO. If you would, please pass along to Don that his former partner George The Duck, has been hitting the sauce again, spending the last couple of weeks here on my couch. He's grown to be an angry cuss, attacking the TV screen whenever an Aflac ad airs. I tell you, there's no living with him. This morning while taking a shower, George just popped in, free as a bird. I've heard of Peeking Duck, but I always thought that was a Chinese dish. Please tell Couser to come get him.
BARRY KILGORE (Houston-Conroe, TX) Jim, I saw in JRRR where George Lester asked about me. My heart problems at KYND were not from the stress of the job. They were from the ... who owned the station. It was a dice roll to see if your pay checks would bounce. After I left KYND I went to legendary KNUZ, Houston and did mornings for a couple of years. Bruce Nelson was my PD and friend. (He may deny that) He was great to work for and I don't know who irritated who the most. I'd love to work for Bruce again. After that Dave Morris, the owner, moved me to KQUE FM, Houston to do a team afternoon show with Cindy Kasparian (Griffis). We did that for more than a decade and had a great show & time. We bickered so much with each other on air that people thought we were married. I continued to get myself in trouble with management, though (as always), by doing such things as tagging all of Joe Roach's mayoral commercials with "Help reduce the size of government...vote for Joe Roach." Joe was a dwarf. I thought it was funny. Management thought we would be sued. No Problem. I have no money.
GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX) One day (in) 1957, when I worked for KRGV RADI0/TV in Weslaco, Texas, I entered the building anticipating a rush of refrigerated air to bring relief from the scorching heat outside only to discover it was almost as hot inside. The air conditioner had quit working. The kindly station owner came around and informed us that it might take a while to get the air conditioner fixed because all the local repairmen were swamped. He suggested that we dress comfortably in the meantime. He added that, under the circumstances, bathing suits were not out of the question. The next day that I came to work wearing Bermuda shorts and a T-shirt. Most of the other employees were attired in similar clothing, but one gorgeous young lady took the owner up on his offer. She paraded around all day in a scanty bikini. It was difficult for all us male employees to keep our minds on our work that day. To be perfectly honest, I was in no hurry for the air conditioner to be repaired. George

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) Hi Jim, I would hate to admit it, but agree with Dan McCurdy about the Fairness Doctrine but for reasons other than what he would give. A local News Director told me that all relevant sides would be presented of a story, I was then asked about how that was determined and who determined it. If a story is not reported does that mean it is not news? Charles George
ANN COULTER (December 8, 1961-p) ...as long as the nation is obsessed with historic milestones, is no one going to remark on what a great country it is where a mentally retarded woman can become speaker of the house?
