POP-COUNTRY SINGER EXPIRES
Remember Seals & Crofts who have great hit tunes in the 1970s like Summer Breeze, Diamond Girl and other wonderful songs? Jim Seals is the brother of Dan Seals who first hits the charts as part of Pop duo England Dan & John Ford Coley. Their first big hit is I'd Really Love To See You Tonight which lands at #2 in the summer of 1976 and sells over a half million copies. Later, Dan becomes a solo Country singer. From 1985-90 he has a string of eleven #1 songs on Billboard. On Wednesday night, March 25, 2009 Dan Seals dies at 61 of cancer at his daughter's home in Nashville, TN. Have fond memories of Dan Seals. In 1979 KULF-790 here in Houston, TX has KULF Party Night where we DJs dress out in tuxedos and welcome the top brass in advertising agencies and other media for lavish festivities in our penthouse suite high atop 2100 Travis Street. England Dan & John Ford Coley are our special guest entertainers. Both come for a visit during my night DJ show. These two fellas not only have a lot of talent but they are first class individuals. Our prayers of comfort go out to Dan's wife Andrea (Andi); children: Jimmy, Jeremy, Holley, Jesse and grandchildren: Megan, Abby, Zachery, Ruby and Luca.

BIG NEWS IN BAYOU CITY RADIO
CBS Radio names Brian Purdy as SVP/Market Manager for its Houston, TX radio station cluster: Sports KILT-610, Country KILT FM (100.3), Top 40 KKHH FM (95.7) and Talk KIKK-650. From a Clear Channel swap CBS gains two more Houston frequencies: Spanish hits KLOL FM (Mega 101.1) and Hot AC KHMX FM (Mix 96.5). Brian replaces Laura Morris in the Bayou City. Purdy also heads up the CBS Radio cluster in Dallas which includes: News/Talk KRLD-1080 and Sports KRLD FM (105.3). Dan Mason CBS Radio President/CEO affirms, Brian is a terrific market manager who has done an outstanding job positioning our Dallas properties as best in class and leaders in the industry. Houston's proximity to Dallas has previously allowed for synergies we're not able to realize in some of our other markets. Now, with Brian at the helm of both operations, we'll be able to fully take advantage of our resources and the expertise of our employees with greater efficiency. Working together, we'll elevate all our assets to an entirely new level.

REJINA BROWN (Seattle, WA) Dear Mr. Rose, My name is Regina Brown. Recently I was perusing the Internet looking for some background information on my father William "Boy" Brown, former PD at K-JET in Beaumont, Texas. I found your site and was pleasantly surprised to see an email (copied below) to you from an old friend looking for information on me in Jim Rose Remembers Radio Issue #545. I'd love to touch bases with this old friend, Mervin Sam, but he didn't list his email address on the message to you. If at all possible, could you please forward my email address to him? I can be reached at
Jinamama3@aol.com. Thank you. Rejina BrownJRRR issue #486 April 4, 2008 [Friday] mentions that the legendary radio station KJET call letters no longer exist on the AM or FM dial in Beaumont, TX. The former KJET-1380 in Beaumont with R&B music is now all news as KRCM-1380 (Fox News Radio). KRCM is currently off the air with a construction permit to move its transmitter to Shenandoah, TX. However, KJET FM now has an FCC license for South Bend, WA as 105.7 The Jet. Another legendary radio station in Beaumont where I'm Music Director and noon-3 pm DJ from 1976-77, Country KTRM-990, is now KZZB-990 with Gospel music. The Big Bopper J.P. Richardson is a former DJ on KTRM in the late 1950s. Willie Nelson also is a former KTRM DJ. Drives me up the wall when owners, managers or programmers flip radio station call letters. When that happens it destroys a part of radio history.

BUD BUSCHARDT (Dallas, TX) Jim, The first successful commercial recordings by Dan Seals were with a group called the "Southwest F.O.B.," previously known as "Theze Few." They recorded for our Dallas GPC Record label. (We leased their material to "Hip Records," a subsidiary of "Stax.") Their "Smell of Incense" was a #4 record on the August 26, 1968 KLIF survey. (It peaked at #7 on the KILT survey in your now hometown of Houston on September 4, 1968.) If you plan to do a story on Dan and need any information on the early days with the F.O.B., feel free to contact me. Bud
JONATHAN FRICKE (Nashville, TN) Dan Seals, one of our great legends in music, not just country, has passed away at the age of 61. Dan had been battling cancer for some time. John Ford Coley, his long time friend and signing partner, informed WSM last evening that Dan had passed away at approximately 830PM last night. Please keep Dan in your prayers as he joins his heavenly Father where he will no longer endure the pain of his illness. He will surely be missed by all music genres'. May his soul rest in the loving arms of our blessed Lord. At this time I do not have any of the funeral arrangements. Messages of sympathy can be sent to the family at: The Seals Family; PO Box 1770; Hendersonville, TN 37077
LYNN WOOLLEY (Temple, TX) Jim, I enjoyed reading about Gene Thomas. In 1968, I was bedridden with a bad case of mumps. I was also a high school senior. I studied at home and listened to (mostly) KTSA until I was back on my feet. "Playboy" by Gene & Debbie was in high rotation. I loved the song and still do. It should have been a national hit. I still have a 45 rpm copy at home. I've never heard anything else by Gene, but maybe I'll search You Tube. Lynn Woolley (www.BeLogical.com)
BILLY THORMAN (Ft. Worth, TX) Subject: Song Trivia. The World's Tallest Midget, Gary Allyn, is right about Edward Bear singing Last Song but that was in the 70's. However the question was about "The Last Song." Another fellow said, Roy Orbison did the Last Song which is correct. But, the version of The Last Song which kicked ass in Texas back in the day was by Gene Thomas.
TRIVIA ANSWER: David Bowie's real name is David Robert Jones. He changes his name for no confusion with Davy Jones of The Monkees.
BARRY KILGORE (Houston-Conroe, TX) Jim, Regarding Darby Douglas' departure from Channel 11, KHOU TV Houston: Darby actually works for Metro Networks in Houston and was contracted out to KHOU. I think he still has a position with Metro Networks. I'll see if I can find out. Also, regarding Joe Ford's mention of Gene Thomas' song "The Last Song": I loved that song and I fell in love with Suzie Redman slow dancin' in our sock feet to it on the floor of Dance Pavilion at Huntsville State Park when I was in the 10th grade at Pasadena High School. Suzie went to Lamar High in Houston. I took that song on cassette with me where ever I went. I always would play it where ever I worked (even if it didn't fit format. Did I mention I got fired a lot?) and relate the Suzie Redman story, sort of like what Jimmy Durante did with Miss Calabash. 30 years later I was at KQUE FM, Houston, doing afternoons and once again related that story to intro "The Last Song". About mid way through, the phone rings. It was Suzie Redman! She had become a sales person for Stetson Hats in based in Dallas. She came to the station and we visited for a while. We were both old and rode hard but it was good to see her again. Then I got a call from Gene Thomas inviting me to come to a performance he was doing at of all places, the Texas Tumbleweed Restaurant in Houston. He sang "The Last Song" for Suzie and me. Ahhhh...life is good. Barry Kilgore, Family Law Radio On Am 700 KSEV - The Voice of Texas, Sunday 1:00PM to 2:00PM, streamed globally at www.ksevradio.com
