ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

LONG ISLAND RADIO EXEC PASSES
A radio DJ and executive who for decades is the fun and personality of old-style local radio, Paul Sidney, dies of leukemia at 69 on Thursday morning, April 2, 2009. Paul's voice is an East End institution during his many years as a personality on WLNG-1600 and WLNG FM (92.1) with Oldies, latest hit music and local news. Bob Shannon of WCBS FM, who is also from WLNG attests, It still hasn't sunk in that he's actually gone. Paul begins on WLNG in the early 1960s and remains on the air after he becomes President/GM. In 2005 he retires: Radio should be instinctive and fun. The way it used to be and should be. Sidney, born in Brooklyn, gets his start in broadcasting in the 1950s as a teenager when he hangs out at the former DuMont TV studios. Paul later moves into radio. In 2007, Paul Sidney inducts into the New York State Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Read more about Paul in the radio station Web site. (

STATUE OF THE KING IN NASHVILLE?
Rejoice dear hearts! How's about a statue of Elvis Presley in Nashville, TN's Hall of Fame park? Gail Kerr writes in Sunday's April 5, 2009 issue of the Tennessean about a fella by the name of Moses Walter Fisher Jr. who suggests the most magnificent sculpture of Elvis Presley anywhere in the United States across the street from Nashville's symphony hall. Seems very appropriate to us Elvis fans but who pays for this magnificent tribute? Moses Walter Fisher Jr. sends two long letters to Metro Councilwomen Megan Barry and Erica Gilmore. Mr. Fisher's letters begin with: There are times when I sometimes wonder why the city that's known around the world as Music City, U.S.A. does not have some kind of memorial in honor of the greatest singer and entertainer of our time, Elvis Aaron Presley. Moses states that Elvis is a great Country singer who records his hit tunes at RCA's famous Studio B. Presley makes an appearance on the Grand Ole Opry. Elvis is an inductee into the Country Music Hall of Fame, plus Presley takes Country music from a regional base to a huge national following. In typical government fashion, Barry and Gilmore forward Moses' letters to the parks department. They end up on Tuesday's parks board agenda. But more likely than not his passionate plea heads off to another government office or to file 13. Like the scripture in the Bible declares there's no room at the inn. In times like these the city of Nashville, TN has no rubles in its coffers for such a project. How about a tiny portion of that Obama stimulus money?

JOYCE WEBSTER [J.C.] (Mena, AR) Hi! Dear Jim, I was saddened to hear about the passing of Jim West, a real gentleman. It is so nice to read how much appreciated he was. I had the pleasure and honor of visiting in the West home once while I was with Starr Broadcasting. While admiring a lovely painting of Mrs. West with her horse, Jim commented that all the money in the world wouldn't buy good health, and he made his adoration of his lovely wife very evident. That memory of Jim has always stood out in my mind. My prayers are with his family. JC

BOB CROWLEY (D/FW-Arlington, TX)
I was at the Irving Metro Networks office to pick up my final pay stub (they forgot to mail it, after sending my last regular paycheck into direct deposit) when I encountered Mike Laurel. He was in the Metro Austin office back when I was at KVET/KASE. He mentioned that the San Antonio office closed 3/31, with all hands lost. Something similar happened at dozens more Metro locations around the country. They're consolidating into just 13 regional operations. That means San Antonio traffic will come from the Dallas (Irving) shop now. (what could go wrong?) I was concerned about Johnny Shannon and his job doing traffic reports at KTSA. I dropped him a line and he's still employed. He works at 5400 Eisenhauer, not the Metro facility on 410. Metro is cutting salaries company wide. The cuts range from 5 to 15 percent. Radio One, the Dallas Morning News and Startlegram are doing the same. Then there's Tom Hicks, who skipped the scheduled interest payments for the money owed on the Stars and Rangers. He wants the lenders to change the schedule and stretch out the repayment. He's confident the lenders don't want to own sports teams. Try that with your landlord and see how long it takes for your stuff to be on the sidewalk! More later. Bob

JERRY MILLER [Mueller] (Houston, TX) Jim...It came to me at dinner tonight. The Charlie Brown created by Gordon McLendon at KLIF in 1961 was really Jack Woods. He later worked in Houston for a short while. Then at last report, years ago, tho'. He worked in San Diego with Paul Menard, 'KILT'S Harrigan'.....his KILT partner, Mac Hudson (Hudson McArthur Roach) also went to another station in San Diego and competed against Charlie and Harrigan, with another partner from Houston, Joe Bauer! And that's the name of that game! Jerry

DAN MCCURDY (Sherman, TX) Why, you're just a young 'un, Jimbo...I was hired by KLIF in June 1963, so it's coming up on 46 years for me since I started spinnin' 45s and talkin' trash in the Metro Mess...1965 in Boston, working with the wonderful Larry Glick...January 1966-January 1967 at KBOX, then on to the fun, creative world of advertising Slurpees and crankin' out PR for 7-Eleven Stores. But, like you, I still have vivid dreams, quite often in fact, of my daze in 'real radio'...I swear to God, I've missed being on the air every day since January 23, 1967...EVERY DAY...I kid you not. And many have been the days that I've felt, as you mentioned, like Shel Silverstein's 'Giving Tree'...three kids and two ex-wives will do that to you...just call me 'Stumpy' too... My best to you, my friend... Dan McCurdy - WMEX, Boston (1965); KLIF, KBOX, Dallas (1963-1967); inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame 2004.

TRIVIA ANSWER: Elvis Presley returns to live performances on July 31, 1969 at the brand new International Hotel in Las Vegas, NV.

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) Good evening Jim: You may wish to verify the death of Hal Durham on Sun March 29. My sources tell me that Hal died @ 77 in Cape Coral, FL. He had previously served as Gen. Mgr of Grand Ole Opry & had also been PD of WSM. Also I did verify that one of the last B-Western movie stars with Texas connections also passed away March 29, 2009. Monte Hale (Samuel Buren Ely), singer/guitarist & actor died in Studio City, CA @ age 89. Born in Ada, OK 6/8/19, he had lived for a time in San Angelo, TX before heading to CA. He helped found the Autry Nat'l Center of American West & was one of the original owners of the LA Angels Baseball team. His records included: In MY Stable There's An Empty Stall," & "Statue In The Bay'" etc. He was an inductee into Western Music Assn Hall of Fame. At an early age, he played for vaudeville shows & local rodeos in Houston & later Galveston. During the second World War, a job as a replacement guitar player with Stars Over Texas War Bond Drive led to a friendship with several Republic Pictures stars & staff. Later signing a 7-yr contract w/studio Pres. Herbert Yates, he discarded his birth-name for a more appealing name of Monte Hale. After an apprenticeship in several bit-parts, Hale was given the lead in "Home On The Range" (1946), which led to a five year run as one of Republic's popular singing cowboy stars. It's reported he taught James Dean his rope tricks during their work together on the movie "Giant' (1955) in Marfa, TX. Hale retired from films, wrote songs, made TV guest appearances & toured as part of a musical cowboy act in rodeos & circuses & appeared at numerous western film-fan conventions. Edit as you wish, if you use any part at all. I pass along only thinking of your interest. I seek no credits. BOB & Sonny Lee
