ESPIONAGE CHARGES AGAINST AMERICAN JOURNALIST
Iran files charges of espionage against 31-year-old American journalist Roxana Saberi. Iranian authorities detain her in January 2009 while she is a freelance reporter. As Tehran bureau chief for Feature Story News, Roxana registers reports for NPR, The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, Fox News, and other news channels. Saberi's lawyer asserts, as they have announced, they have accused her of espionage. The prosecution declares that she accepted the accusation. As of yet, no trial date is set. But this is serious business. Reuters reports, Under Iran's penal code, the crime of espionage can carry the death penalty. Last November Iran executed an Iranian businessman convicted of spying on the military for Israel.
THE END OF SIRIUS XM?
Computerworld blogger Mike Elgan affirms his basis for the mercy killing of Sirius XM on rumors that the next generation of Apple's iPhone includes both advanced streaming abilities plus an FM radio chip. The end of Sirius XM might stretch things a bit. But there's light at the end of the tunnel for terrestrial radio because new iPhones with FM receivers can be a major plus.

DERRILL E. HOLLY (Arlington, VA) You are performing a much needed service to the radio community. While information on the passing of notables from country, rock and AOR may be found elsewhere, it is rare that anything on jazz luminaries makes it to the eyes of those who know the music. Your inclusion of these artists as well as the exits of long silent jocks from bygone eras are one of the things that makes your column special. Keep up the good work. Derrill E. Holly

DR. BRUCE NELSON (Corpus Christi, TX) Hey, Jim a shout out to the legendary Tom Cat Reeder. My first job when I got out of the service was at WDON in Wheaton Md. (Wash. DC) doing mid-days after the Ton Cat. He was the Big Dog when I came to Country Music in the DC area. I learned a lot from Reeder and am proud to share space in the Country Disc Jockey Hall of Fame with him. They broke the mold after the Tom Cat. Good to know he's still playing a blue grass tune or two from time to time. Dr. Bruce Nelson Stratton GM KFTX Corpus Christi p.s. I'm gonna be 66 in May so that makes Reeder about 103 right Tom???
BOB CROWLEY (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Bob Guthrie is retiring from WOAI-AM after 53 years. That's according to a press release from the station. He started in 1956, at the age of 22. I first encountered him when I was a boy, and he was the anchor for WOAI-TV Channel 4. He was the news director for many years, but stepped down from that post in the late 70's, if I recall correctly. I worked with him from 1985 to 1987. I am amazed at the stability News Director Jim Forsyth has been able to achieve in his department. Jim has been there since '87, Michael Main since '85, and city hall reporter Bud Little joined the station in '75. My favorite Bob Guthrie story is how he built a house for himself in one of the northern suburbs of San Antonio {Shavano Park?) and was showing it to someone when that someone offered to buy it. He sold it, and then built another, then another, then a couple dozen more, finally building his own home straddling a creek. Bob Guthrie has that perfect radio voice... deep and rich. He also has a cheerful disposition, and always treated me with great kindness and respect. What a pro! Bob
DAN MCCURDY (Sherman, TX) The best advice I have ever given to young, aspiring radio hopefuls was exactly that...when you look at the microphone, imagine very small groups of people, not the thousands who may be listening...that helps with the nerves, too...it's much easier to talk one-on-one or one-on-two than thinking of yourself in a huge stadium talking to masses of folks. Also, I've told many aspiring radio youngsters this: NEVER go into a bit or gag or any live shtick without having a punch line ready or a snapper handy to end the bit...and after you throw the kicker or payoff, immediately go into an up-tempo jingle or record to serve as an 'exclamation mark' to the punch line. Dan McCurdy - WMEX, Boston (1965); KLIF, KBOX, Dallas (1963-1967); inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame 2004.
BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) HI JIM: When I started smoking as a Senior in HS, I blamed Dennis James & his dancin' Old Gold cig pack; I stopped smoking 3/27/84 to never touch another; this time I blamed my daughter! Cigs were $5 ctn (I never bought single packs) She gave me good advice. I finally got to meet the great anncr Dennis James in Phoenix in 1995; he died 6/3/97 of cancer @ 79 in Palm Springs, CA. I too bought a brand new 1957 Bel Air Chev off showroom floor at Hairston Chev., Chesapeake, Ohio, but believe mine was a bit more in price than your Dad's '57; I kept mine until trading for a '60 in Tampa. Wish I still had the '57, as I made a bad move! Thx for your note...always good to chat this way & often. Did I hear Tejas wish a Happy Birthday to Sonny Lee?? Your buddy, BOB

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) Hi Jim, If a person is treated like they are a no-nothing does it make it so? In High School, I was taking a class in Journalism. I wrote an editorial, my teacher told me it could not be published since the newspaper was part of the school system being criticized. So I asked about Freedom of Speech, Freedom of the Press. She told me she would print it as a letter to the editor if I signed my name, which I did and she did as she promised. I mentioned that P. E. only taught how to compete and lets those who could win, win but did not help the rest of us. Anyway my P. E. Teacher when he saw me asked what could be done. I said think about the needs and maybe have Frisbee or sports that were not competitive for us who hated that aspect. Help us to train since not all of us would be jocks. I also found the students hating me for the letter were not the ones that I thought would and vice versa, go figure. KWTX, I think they might find reception reports I sent. I managed to get AM/FM/TV all verified at different times. Charles George
GEORGE BASIL C. HUME (March 2, 1923—June 17, 1999) The great gift of Easter is hope - Christian hope which makes us have that confidence in God, in his ultimate triumph, and in his goodness and love, which nothing can shake.
