PHILLY SPORTS GUY LEAVES

Bill Vargus a Temple University graduate and sportscaster on Fox WTXF-TV CH29 (formerly WTAF-TV) Philadelphia, PA leaves the building on April 29, 2009 because they do not renew his contract. Vargus' wife TV weather personality Sue Serio remains on Fox29. Bill's email to the press states, it’s very disappointing, but like anything in life, you have to look at it as an opportunity. I have some other things I’ve been wanting to explore. But I’m going to also stay open to any other broadcasting opportunities.

Gradick Communications owns 5 stations in the area...WBTR-FM and WCKS-FM Carrollton, WLBB AM Carrollton, WKNG AM Tallapoosa (50,000 watts) and WKNG-FM licensed to Heflin, Ala, but studios with the AM building. Ran across your column surfing the net. Yes, sign me up. Your news is so complete for my purposes. RDN and R&R have a lot of stuff I have no interest in. Our station web site is WKNG.com. Right now we have it under construction to dress it up but click to personalities and there I am. Best. Red Jones (Georgia Radio Hall of Fame)

JOHNNY SHANNON (San Antonio, TX)
Hey there Jim. Good to see you on here (Facebook), my friend. See where you and John Steel are hooked up. I heard from him today too. Hope all is well with you. Johnny

DAN MCCURDY (Sherman, TX) So many small-to-medium market radio guys let their egos overtake their on-air-sanity and, eyes-wide-open, talk themselves into a verbal corner without any redeeming wrap-up to what they're saying. The thing they don't seem to understand is that with very few exceptions, nobody is listening to the magic box to hear THEM. But, egos being what they are, most on-air DJs assume that people are listening to their happy butts. They're NOT. They are listening to be updated, to be entertained, to be informed, to be soothed, and to be carried back in time in the reverie of a song shared with a long-lost love. There are myriad reasons that people listen to radio, and just about the least of these reasons is the guy or gal on the air. Dan McCurdy - WMEX, Boston (1965); KLIF, KBOX, Dallas (1963-1967); inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame 2004.

GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX) It was at KOZY in Texarkana in 1955 that I had my second meeting with Elvis Presley. He and Hank Thompson were appearing together on a show in Texarkana. They came by the radio station to promote their engagement. At that stage in his career Elvis was not nearly as well known as Hank Thompson so he was opening for him. I had to do a news break so I told them to just sit tight for five minutes and I'd get back to them. While I was doing my best Walter Cronkite impersonation I glanced up to see Elvis crossing his eyes and sticking his tongue out at me in an attempt to break me up. When I finished the news cast I walked up to Elvis and reminded him of our meeting a while back when he was on the Louisiana Hayride. I discovered that despite his extroverted appearance he was actually very shy and retiring. I saw what appeared to be genuine fright in his eyes as he backed away from me. I didn't pursue the conversation any further. I learned the hard way not to take it for granted that big stars would be as friendly and approachable as they had been at a previous meeting.

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) You can reach Ferlin via Heart of TX records, Tracy Pitkin, KNEL, Brady, TX; I believe you have his e-mail as I helped make your connections; if not, I can offer. (also, webmaster@Ferlinhusky.com may get your results.) Some side notes from my files: Ferlin has sold over 20 mill records; was first country artist to have his star on Hollywood Walk of Stars; hospitalized for some leg surgery, June 2007; heart by-pass, 1977 & 1999; has new record project on Heart of TX records & also will appear on a cruise to Bahamas for shows. Oct. 18-25, 2009. (In 1949, recorded his 1st under name Terry Preston; I believe his alter-ego Simon Crum came along in 1955, but in 1956 he joined the "rock-roll" crowd with releases: "Bop Cat Bop" & "Slow Down Brother.") Had a memorable hit-duo w/Jean Shepard (#4, 1953: "Forgive Me John" 1957's "Gone" to #1 & repeat in 1960 w/"Wings of a Dove" (written by Bob Ferguson, 1928-7/22/01) Ferlin's son, Danny, 17, drummer in his band was killed in car wreck, Cadiz, KY, March 1970. Had been a DJ KXLW, ST. Lo & DJ in Bakersfield, 1949. (He once guest-hosted A. Godfrey's Radio Show, NYC, 1957 & has appeared in 18 movies! Believe this may add to your interest in ole Ferlin...believe he also once had a theater in Myrtle Beach, SC same time as Gatlin Bros. Best to you & Tejas, BOB & Sonny Lee

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) Hi, I have fun at El Centro when they had a studio set up in the basement, and using a Gates Cart Machine and 2 turntables, a Wolensak (sp) Reel to Reel, with a Spotmaster Mixing Board. They had us playing Top-40; however; I would stick in R&B that I liked. Like Al Green, The Snake and Show And Tell. It was fun also getting to be at KCHU (FM) the short time I was there. At night I used to listen to a Blues program over XEG 1050, the station sent me my first QSL for a report I sent. Charles George
