HERE'S WHERE THE MONEY GOES
Citadel Broadcasting struggles ever since it buys Disney's 22 radio stations for $2.7 billion. At the time, Citadel shares trade for more than $7. Citadel now owns more than 220 radio stations in 27 states that include KABC-790 in L.A., WABC-770 in NYC and WLS-890 in Chicago. In March 2009, Citadel's stock drastically drops to one penny. On Thursday, April 9th Citadel's stock closes at six cents. In comparison, Sirius XM is at 35c. In 2006, Citadel CEO Farid Suleman makes a total of about $18 million. In 2007 his total pay falls to $11.2 million. In 2008 Farid's total is $6 million when he decides to cut out his stock options. Suleman owns 3.19% of Citadel stock. Citadel CFO Judy Ellis' 2007 pay falls from $2 million to $750,000 in 2008. Currently, in 2009, her pay check is $500,000 per year. Nice work if we can get it. Citadel Broadcasting Corporation's 2009 annual stockholders meeting is on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at 11:00 am (EST) at the JPMorgan Chase Conference Center on Madison Avenue in beautiful downtown NYC.

JOYCE WEBSTER [J.C.] (Mena, AR) Subject: Jim, I will try to give you a report (tornado damage). My oldest son took me to Bentonville since we had no power anywhere in Mena, and it was very cold...just back tonight, the (tornado) damage is horrific. I'm very blessed as just the outer part of it (tornado) passed over my house, my mother's house, etc. This is the best I have seen of the view of Mena. Of course, we all lost power and saw nothing! This is a Ft. Smith station which has always been my favorite for covering our weather. The green water tower is probably half a mile down from me. I am the 1st house on North Eve Street which was basically in the middle of the tornado's path. This is thanks to my cousin in Oklahoma. They saw the tornado but it lifted back up. She actually got footage of it and has posted it on her site. Aerial Footage of Mena Tornado Damage www.kfsm.com/news/kfsm-news-top-mena-aerials,0,1356881.story JC

WHERE DO YOU READ JRRR? Tell us how far away from Houston, TX that you read JRRR. Send your full name, city, state and country of residence to rosekkkj@earthlink.net.

J. R. KENNEDY (Houston, TX)
Subject: KQUE lunch. hi Jim, random thoughts from a scattered brain...attended the KQUE/KNUZ reunion lunch yesterday and what an event...Paul Berlin, Joe Ford, Ken Grant, Dave Ward...and so many more from over the years...to see all these guys at one time after all these years. What a pleasure and a real honor to be there. Thanks to all these guys for all the great memories and for the music from the days when radio was!

J. WALTER REYNOLDS (Houston-Kingwood, TX) Subject: Red Jones and Chuck Dunaway. Jim it sure was good hearing from Jones and Chuck Dunaway in your last edition. Remembering the good old days listening to the greats on KILT. I remember Red Jones from the early 60's at KILT. I also remember Red brought to KILT in a female Disc Jockey by the name of Randi from Winston-Salem. To my knowledge she was the first female in Top 40 in Houston. We've all got lots of great memories of radio in the 60's. J. Walter Reynolds, Ret., Kingwood/Houston, Texas

DAN MCCURDY (Sherman, TX) I worked for one of the real, honest geniuses of Top 40 Radio, as a matter of fact, the man who most national broadcasters give credit for inventing the format, Gordon McLendon...'The Old Scotchman' as he was called. He had a sign in our control room at KLIF in Dallas which read: The 3 Bs of Good Broadcasting: B-Funny, B-Informative or B-Quiet. Dan McCurdy - WMEX, Boston (1965); KLIF, KBOX, Dallas (1963-1967); inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame 2004.

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) Subject: The Morning After.
Here is a story of another Broadcaster that has left us. I hate this type of story, but then Easter made me think about what I believe and why. BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX)
From:
tracy@hillbillyhits.com Subject: Texas Governor Rick Perry Recognizes Heart of Texas Country Music Association. As Governor of Texas, it is my pleasure to welcome everyone attending the 20th Anniversary Celebration for the Heart of Texas CMA. In so many ways, Texas culture is intertwined with great country music: from Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys to Willie Nelson; from Freddy Fender to George Strait. Organizations like the Heart of Texas CMA have helped keep the spirit of Texas music as alive and as vibrant as ever. But don't take my word for it. Just take a look at the array of talented performers who will grace the stage in celebration of Heart of Texas' second full decade of excellence. The dedication of these individuals stands in testimony to the way Texas music continues to capture the heart and imagination of performers and fans from all across the state and around the world. Once this music takes hold of you, it won't let go. So enjoy the performances during this celebration, joining in a tradition that goes back generations, and indulging in a sound that truly represents the Best in Texas. First Lady Anita Perry joins me in congratulating the Heart of Texas CMA for 20 years, and in wishing everyone present a great time. Sincerely, Rick Perry, Governor, State of Texas

TRIVIA ANSWER: Gladys Knight gets the name the Pips for her group from her manager's name James Pip Patten.

GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX)
Subject: Charlie Walker. Penny and I have enjoyed watching "Grand Old Opry Reunion" on RFD - TV and several times I noticed Charlie Walker sitting in there in background. It brought me back to when he was as a DJ on KMAC in San Antonio while I worked at KTSA. Several times we ran into each other at Willow Springs golf course. It got to be a pretty regular thing and we would plan our get togethers at the golf course. We just seemed to sort of hit it off. A few years later he recorded "Don't Squeeze My Sharmon". That was the end of our golf games. His career was rejuvenated in a big way and he took off for Nashville and the Grand Old Opry. It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy but golf wasn't near as much fun after that. It was with heavy heart that I heard of his passing last fall. It's been over 40 years but I can still clearly see his smiling face and hear his laughter out there on the golf course. He will be missed.
