DELFONICS FOUNDER DIES
Do you remember spring 1968 when the smooth, soulful voices of the Delfonics, La-La-Means I Love You, captures us music lovers hearts? That great tune takes me back to when I spin records on 50,000 watt clear channel WFAA-820 in my hometown Dallas, TX. In 1965, as students at Philadelphia's Overbrook High, brothers William and Wilbert Hart, Ritchie Daniels and Randy (Rudy) Cain form the Four Gents who later become the Delfonics. Thom Bell, Philly Sound producer, brings to the group a string of hits. William Hart, Delfonics lead singer, writes most of their songs. In early 1970, Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time) becomes their second tune to sell over a half million copies, plus it takes home the 1970 R&B Grammy prize. In the mold of the Delfonics, Thom also produces 1970s Supergroups The Stylistics and The Spinners. In 1971, Randy Cain leaves the Delfonics. In 1973 he helps to form Philly group Blue Magic, whom we know for their summer 1974 Classic #8 Pop hit and #1 R&B smash Sideshow which sells over a half million copies. From 1971-74 Richmond, VA R&B singer Major Harris is Cain's Delfonics replacement. In spring 1975, Major goes solo with the #5 half million seller, Love Won't Let Me Wait. We spin that great tune on KXOL-1360 in Ft. Worth. Randy Cain passes away in his Maple Shade Township, NJ home on Thursday, April 9, 2009. Rob O'Neal, Burlington County medical examiner's office investigator, declines to release details of the cause of his death because of an ongoing investigation.

ABC TV FIRES LONGTIME CORRESPONDANT
Veteran 20/20 news correspondent Bob Brown, who is on ABC TV since 1977, loses his job. ABC TV tells him that he can still do freelance for the network. Bob, who turns 65 in two months, tells NY Post's Page Six, I hope there's work available after June. It's a big change of status, that's for sure. I'll be sorry to leave. One longtime staff member fumes: ABC has no regard for the people who helped them get where they are today. He's one of their old-school journalists and is loved by everybody. Jeffrey Schneider of ABC insists they will use Brown a lot, He is very valued.
TV NEWS EXPANDS!
Raycom Media celebrates WALB-TV CH10's all new newsroom on Monday, April 13, 2009. While many TV stations lay off news anchors and cut news programs the WALB News team now performs in a new expanded facility at their headquarters on Stuart Avenue in Albany, GA. CH10 employees and Raycom Media corporate executives cut the ribbon on the 4800 square foot addition during the grand opening of WALB's new newsroom. Paul McTear, Raycom CEO, brags, To be in the news business today means you have to produce news 24 hours a day for not only the television screen, but also the cell phone screen and Internet. RED JONES (Carrollton, GA) Subject: Your column. Enjoy your column. Especially since it comes from Houston. I'm a Texas-born transplant. Worked TX radio 1948-1962. l957-1962 as PD and air shows KILT. The great ole days of Houston radio. Went to WQXI Atlanta in 1962 as PD and morning show. In Georgia still kickin'. 60 years now and still on the air, as independent contractor doing mornings at 50,000 watt WKNG. Retire to what? I look for names from the past but so many I worked with have "gone on" one way or another. Would like to make contact with any still here at

WALTER HAMMOCK (Houston, TX) Jim I sure wish you had made the luncheon, I posted a bunch of pictures on Facebook and you can see some of the folks you missed. Tom Franklin, who got his start at KNUZ/KQUE popped in, as did the REAL Sean O'Neal the voice over king from Bill Young Productions. Just so many folks, Berlin, Joe Ford, well that just goes without saying what a treat that was. Seeing Ken Grant again, why it must be over 20 years since I'd seen him and Clyde Ruffin our old copywriter, whew just a lot of memories came flooding back. Ronnie, Scott Arthur, Paul Williams, and Arch I see pretty often as I do the illustrious Harold Gunn. Heck I'm always thrilled to see Chuck Dunaway, one of my top 50 heroes from back in the day. When I first met Chuck I had 1. No idea he was FROM Houston 2. He grew up listening to Paul Berlin and 3. That Paul remains his radio idol. I'm hoping we can do it again because I know we missed a bunch of folks.
J. WALTER REYNOLDS (Houston-Kingwood, TX) Thank you Jim for the email. Jim I live in Kingwood/Houston. I'm a retired fellow. I have a friend also retired from broadcasting that turns me on to http://news.jimroseremembersradio.com/ about a year ago. so about once a week I look in and see what's going on. In 1964 I worked at KRMD in Shreveport; the studios were in the old Captain Shreves Hotel, downtown. I started in radio in 1960 in Lake Charles, Louisiana. I also worked radio in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Birmingham, Alabama and Tampa, Florida. And I worked television in Beaumont, Baton Rouge and Oklahoma City and then got out and started my own ad agency. You mentioned KASO in Minden. I listen to them over Internet. Kind of reminds me of the way things were back when we got started in the sixties. Man I remember when we got our cartridge machines. Prior to that we use the Ampex.
CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) Hi, I think there is still good radio to listen to though getting harder to find. I don't like the new stuff played and the old stuff tends to bore me from having heard it too often. Like when I watch a movie about actors putting on a show, I like shop talk but not when watching a movie, I want the finished product. Where as I enjoy the shop talk in your newsletter, makes me realize how much work goes into what I heard that I enjoyed. Charles George
DAVID PERKINS (Fort Worth, TX) Hey Jimbo and Tejas (good girl). Sorry to read about Harry Kalas passing. Many may not know this but Harry was an Astros Baseball play-by-play announcer before he went to Philly. I knew him when I was on KPRC, the Astros flagship station at the time, and he worked with the best announcing team in the business, Lowell Passe, Gene Elston and Bob Green, engineer. He was a fine man in addition to having one of the best voices I've ever heard. If you've ever seen those NFL greatest games shows, you've heard Harry. And last weekend my wife Pat and I went down to Palestine to ride the Texas State Railroad and who should be doing the announcing on the train (it was Snoopy and the Easter Bunnies weekend) but David Malone of KBOX, KIKK and KNUZ (as Bill Malone) He and I visited for quite a while about old times in radio. Here's his email address if you'd like to send him a copy of JRRR. biglipsmalone@aol.com David Perkins, The Ecumenical Church for the Followers of Christ, The Jesus Christ Said Ministries (www.JesusChristSaid.com)
