MADDEN RETIRES!
Can it be true? John Madden, ultimate veteran National Football League color commentator, announces to us football fans on Thursday, April 16, 2009 that he retires and is not part of the NBC TV Sports broadcast team for the 2009 NFL season! John spends three decades in the broadcast booth for each of the four major networks: ABC TV, NBC TV, CBS TV and Fox TV. Madden sighs: It's time. I'm 73 years old. My 50th wedding anniversary is this fall. I have two great sons...five grandchildren. It's been such a great ride...the NFL has been my life for more than 40 years, it has been my passion - it still is. I appreciate all of the people who are and were such an important part of the most enjoyable, most fun anyone could have...that great life with the teams, the players, the coaches, the owners, the League...my broadcasting partners Pat and Al...the production people and the fans...is still great...it's still fun and that's what it makes it hard and that's why it took me a few months to make a decision. Dick Ebersol, NBC Sports chairman, says that Cris Collinsworth replaces John Madden in NBC's Sunday Night Football broadcast booth. There is only one John Madden. How many of us remember John as Oakland Raiders linebacker coach from 1967-68 and Oakland head coach from 1969-1978 - Cris Collinsworth Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver who scoops up footballs out of the air like leaves that fall from a tree?

HARRY KALAS MEMORIAL SERVICE
Probably the most unexpected scene at the Harry Kalas Memorial Service on Saturday, April 18, 2009 is to witness former ABC WPVI-TV CH6 associate Scott Palmer push 6ABC Sports Director, Gary Papa, in a wheelchair to Harry’s casket. Scott is now a Phillies employee. Gary battles prostate cancer. He has an undisclosed medical procedure a few weeks ago. How well I know about all of those prostate procedures as doctors call them. Harry Kalas fans see a sign with the words There’s No Crying in Baseball…Until Today. The Kalas Family asks entertainer Eddie Bruce to sing High Hopes at the Memorial Service. Harry knows singer, bandleader, lifetime Phillies fan Eddie Bruce since 1981. Some of the Phillies family in attendance are Mike and Donna Schmidt, Garry and Sondra Maddox, Dick Allen, Dickie Ray Noles, Larry Christenson, Steve Carlton, John Kruk, Mitch Williams, and Ricky Botallico. The Philadelphia Phillies' TV booth is now The Harry Kalas Broadcast Booth.

JOANIE GREEN-GALLO (Houston, TX) Hi Jim, Many thanks to Bud Buschardt (Hi Bud!) for the trip down memory lane - I remember Southwest F.O.B. and did not know Dan Seals was in that band - I enjoyed the group during the time they were around. My condolences to the Seals family. Joanie Green
GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX) Jim, I swear this really happened. When I worked for KTSA in San Antonio I would nearly always head straight for the golf course and get in 18 holes before going home. I guess it was about 1963 or so and I was playing at Brackenridge Park. On a par four I hit my second shot to about eight feet from the pin. As I was lining up to sink what would be my first birdie putt in a long time I heard an awful racket. I looked up to see a car bouncing out of control across an open field. The car started spinning around in circles faster and faster until it finally stalled. As I stood there gaping I noticed that the grass under the car had caught fire and oil was pouring from under the engine and feeding the flames. There was no one else in sight so I dropped my putter, waded across a drainage ditch with water up to my neck and sprinted the hundred yards or so to the car. The obviously drunk driver was just sitting there staring blankly ahead. I swung the door open and tried to pull him out but he had a death grip on the steering wheel. I had to literally beat his hands loose to get him out. Just as I led him to a safe distance the car burst into flames. Later the fire department arrived and I let them take over. I went back and finished the last couple of holes of golf and then phoned the story into the KTSA newsman on duty. Evidently he didn't deem it important enough and the story never got on the air. By the way, I missed that birdie putt. Darn it!
SATURDAY NIGHT 1979 KTRK-TV CH13 Weathercaster par excellence Ed Brandon plus CH13 Sports Director Bob Allen are guests on my Saturday night Oldies show on Top 40 KULF-790 here in Houston, TX in 1979. KTRK-TV Talk show entertainer Jan Glenn serves as our hostess with the mostest. Oh What a night! It's an Oldie but Goodie fun time that lives forever.
ED BRANDON (Houston, TX) I DO remember that appearance with Dave and Bob. As best I remember, it was only one of two times the three of us appeared on the air anywhere except Channel 13. The other was The John Downey Talk Show in KILT. Keep the daily posts coming!
BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) You mentioned that everyone is younger when we reach 65...you are so right: all those who were older than me are now gone: George Burns, John Wayne, Ronald Reagan, etc, etc, only one left is Dick Clark; I am older than everyone else! I never was a fan of The Beatles, so Elvis is still King in my view. (of course he did set foot on European soil, but not as a stage star.) You signed off with a quote in JRRR of the great Will Rogers. Are you aware that he once toured on shows in Texas with the Father of Country Music, Jimmie Rodgers? When Jimmie lived in Kerrville (1929-32), he & Will Rogers did many shows together in places like San Angelo, Lubbock, Abilene, San Antonio, etc. I have seen the home Rodgers built in Kerrville ("Blue Yodelers Paradise" for $50,000 in 1929); still there, a private home now & not even marked by the city or C of C! By the way, Will Rogers, Jr. died about 5 years ago in Tucson, AZ. I was fortunate to meet Jimmie's widow in Nashville, & Carrie's autographed, dated note to me is still a treasure. She died in 1961. I didn't mean to bore or become so windy; sometimes I can't stop relating stories. I must get them in a book someday. I do hope you & Tejas have an enjoyable holiday & I appreciate your friendship. BOB & Sonny Lee.
TRIVIA ANSWER: Famous songwriter Jimmy Webb gets his inspiration to write Up, Up and Away as he watches a hot air balloon a friend flies during a radio station promotion.
GARY ALLYN (San Diego-Fallbrook, CA) Jim, here's a little quote for the ending of your column. 'Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass...It's learning how to dance in the rain!' Gary Allyn (www.garyallyn.com) / (http://garyallynsradiopinion.blogspot.com/)
PATRICK HENRY (May 29, 1736-June 6, 1799) The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the people; it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government.
