COUNTRY RADIO LEGEND DEPARTS
A familiar radio voice who is the longtime Program Director and AM Drive host on 50,000 watt clear channel KWKH-1130 in Shreveport, LA dies late Saturday, April 18, 2009 at only 53 of what his family says is a possible heart attack. Barney Cannon comes to life in New Boston, TX. Barney's radio career begins in 1972 as a part-time DJ in Clarksville, TX and New Boston before he moves on up to KCMC-740 in Texarkana. Cannon also finds himself behind the mic on WCDS-1230 in Glasgow, KY; Wichita Falls, TX and Oklahoma City, OK. In 1985, Barney rises to the occasion on KWKH-1130: This is my last stop in radio. I've seen a lot of the country, but this is the station I grew up on and I've been fortunate to work with great people over the years. Hall of Fame Disc Jockeys like Frank Page, Larry Scott. Mike Oatman and Mike Lynch. I've met and worked with some famous people in the music industry and for the most part, that is the great thing about country artists, they are just everyday folks like you and me. Frank Page, who retires from KWKH plus a Country radio legend, reflects: I've lost a great friend, but country music has lost an even greater friend. Frank is the first to bring Elvis Presley onto the Louisiana Hayride stage. Page mentions: He followed it, and he loved it. He had a passion for country music, and he knew more about the Louisiana Hayride than even I did. Barney Cannon leaves behind many friends in addition to his wife Kaye and twin kids Kyle and Kimberly. He and his wife of almost 30 years, Kaye, live in Jefferson, TX.

TV NEWS EXPANDS!
A record drop in advertising pushes TV station owners' news crews to fill expanded schedules. This allows TV Program Directors to get rid of high dollar syndicated programs like Dr. Phil. In Los Angeles and San Francisco, CA TV stations add as many as 12 hours of news each week to their schedules.

LARRY SCOTT (Dallas-Terrell, TX) Jim, I'll be more than happy to write a few words about Barney. He was a standby for eleven of the fourteen years I did The Interstate Road Show on KWKH. He was one of the most dedicated individuals I've ever known. Barney was a student of his calling and dearly loved country music. He loved KWKH and was always searching to learn more of the stations legacy. It's always nice to say you have a TRUE friend. Barney was one. Gail and I are going to Barney's funeral Wednesday morning in Jefferson. Larry

HAROLD GUNN (Houston, TX) Dear Jim, What started out as Walt Hammock and me wanting to get a hand full of old friends to meet for lunch date took on a life of its own and became a reunion buffet with over 30 attending. This past Monday at Santos Mexican Restaurant on Westheimer in Houston, staff members and on air personalities of the great old KNUZ/KQUE radio station gathered to catch up and go down memory lane. In the crowd were Rock and Roll Hall of Fame DJ, Paul Berlin; Country Music Hall of Fame DJ, Arch Yancey; Texas Association of Broadcasters Pioneer designees, Chuck Scott and Harold Gunn; KTRK TV news anchor, Dave Ward. Along with Berlin and Yancey, Texas Radio Hall of Fame members in the crowd were Ken Grant, Chuck Dunaway and Joe Ford. Other air personalities included Paul Williams, Walter Hammock, Ronnie Renfro, Scott Arthur, Mike Marshall, Larry Don Johnson, Bob Edwards, Tom Franklin, and Barry Kilgore. Sometime the greatest things in life happen spontaneously. You should have been there, Harold
BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) From: tracy@hillbillyhits.com Subject: Legendary Disc Jockey Barney Cannon Dies. Barney Cannon, familiar morning voice on KWKH Radio in Shrevport, and its longtime program director, died late Saturday of a possible heart attack, his family says. He was 53.A native of New Boston, Texas, he lived in Jefferson, Texas, with his wife of almost 30 years, Kay. According to the KWKH Radio Web site, Cannon started his broadcasting career in 1972 as a part-time announcer in Clarksville, Texas and New Boston, before moving to Texarkana to work for KCMC Radio, then moving to WCDS in Glasgow, Ky. After stints in Wichita Falls and Oklahoma City, he returned to Jefferson, moving to KWKH in 1985. "This is my last stop in radio," he said on the station Web site. "I've seen a lot of the country, but this is the station I grew up on and I've been fortunate to work with great people over the years. Hall of Fame Disc Jockeys like Frank Page, Larry Scott. Mike Oatman and Mike Lynch. I've met and worked with some famous people in the music industry and for the most part, that is the great thing about country artists, they are just everyday folks like you and me." Frank Page, one of the giants of country radio and now retired from KWKH, remembers Cannon as a protégé of Scott's and as a great part of what made country music radio what it is now. "I've lost a great friend, but country music has lost an even greater friend," said Page, perhaps best known as the first person to announce Elvis Presley from the stage of the Louisiana Hayride. "He followed it, and he loved it. He had a passion for country music, and he knew more about the Louisiana Hayride than even I did." In addition to his widow, Cannon's survivors include twin children Kyle and Kimberly. Funeral arrangements are pending.
TRIVIA ANSWER: The F.O.B. in England Dan Seals and John Ford Coley's 1968 Pop group Southwest F.O.B. means Freight On Board. Their one record that lands in Billboard in late 1968 is the Acid Rock tune Smell of Incense. In 1969, Southwest F.O.B. breaks up. In the late 1970s, the England Dan Seals and John Ford Coley duo becomes hot Pop tickets. In the 1980s, England Dan Seals as a solo artist has 11 #1 hits on Billboard's Country chart.
FR. BOB TOMLINSON (Ft. Worth, TX) Yes I knew about FOB. I used it as a contest question at a station in East Texas. Terry rings a bell but I can never tell on the last name. Too long ago. North Park was a favorite afternoon hang out for us from Woodrow and all Dallas high schools. I went many times to the Sumthin’ Else show and I knew a girl who was a dancer on the show. Joanie Prather. Later to go to Hollywood. I've heard stories like yours about Ron. The few times I talked to him in person he was nice and offered help with my show by listening to air checks. I sent a few, he tore one up offered advice which I only took part of then quit sending tapes. He asked me later if I took his advice. When I said no he didn't say another word to me. Oh well, he was/is still a great jock and him and Ken Dowe, Jimmy Rabbitt and Mike Selden are reasons I got into the business. I've found that the friendships made in radio are short lived except for maybe a hand full or less. I think it's just part of the business. I've connected with people I never worked with except for sharing time behind a mike who I now would call friends. You and a couple others who post here are in that group. Best wishes friend. Bob
