PACIFIC NW RADIO LEGEND DIES
In April 2008, CBS Radio Triple A KINK FM (101.9) Portland, OR morning show host for 22 years receives a diagnosis of melanoma. Les Sarnoff undergoes surgery for the cancer. With a clean bill of health he returns to the KINK airwaves. But in December 2008 more tests reveal that his cancer returns and spreads. Les takes a leave of absence from radio but maintains his Internet entries about his battle with cancer plus he chats with fans. Les Sarnoff dies at 60 on Friday, April 17, 2009. The sad news reaches KINK's current morning duo Dave Scott & Sheila Hamilton. On Saturday morning, they head to the radio studios and go on the air at noon for their very own tribute to Les. KINK's telephone lines light up like a Christmas tree with hundreds of calls from friends, fans and associates in the media. Because of the huge outpouring of response Dave and Sheila end up on the air until 7pm. KINK PD Dennis Constantine affirms, Les Sarnoff was a special person; he always had a positive outlook on life. He had a curiosity about everything, which made him a very interesting person. He always had great things to talk about on the air. Les knew that it's what's between the records that makes a great radio station and Les Sarnoff made KINK great. We will miss him. We keep up with Les Sarnoff's tribute at www.kink.fm/.

EMAILS YES WE HAVE EMAIL
SAM LEE (Beverly Hills, CA) Wow, Thanks for the update. Ted Agnew (KLIF-1190) also hired me, at the request of Gordon McLendon. (smile) Ted was extremely good to me. Got me into UT Arlington for voice lessons, the Dallas Press Club. It would be nice to find out about him. The work you do is important. Put a pay pal button on your web site and watch what happens. We would be honored to share in the cost our history. I heard from Larry at the Texas Hall of Fame and he brought me up to speed on his efforts. In fact, the bible was "a worker is worthy of his hire". Now, please I ask you to let us (your readers and friends) financially be a part of your efforts. Now don't go Texas on me. We would be honored to support your work. By the way, Scott had Bruce's age at passing wrong. He was only 63 at the time, which would make him 71 today. I have some stories about Bruce and his kindness that no one knows. I would have to say he was the brother I never had and I truly miss him. I'll email you with a time to call. Today is Friday and I've got the weekend stuff to get out of the way. I'll check in with you tomorrow. Sam (

DALENE RICHELLE (Dallas, TX) Subject: Unroutable address. Hi Jim! I'm having a few technical issues with my old website that includes that address...in the meantime, please use dalene@lantanamusic.com, which should work! thanks for letting me know!! Dalene
GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX) Subject: Another radio adventure. I think it was about 1968 and I had been made program director of KBER-AM/FM in San Antonio. The station owner, A.V. Bamford, was on an extended vacation in Europe. Harrel Banks had just left the station to take over as GM of KBUC. I found out that Willie Nelson and his band had been booked by the station to do a concert in San Antonio. He was living in nearby Helotes at the time and he had often hung out with all us jocks at KBER. We set the show up and everything went like a well oiled clock. The fans were happy and Willie and the boys were happy. Then there came a big problem. Neither A.V. Bamford nor Harrel Banks had made arrangements for Willie to get paid. Being the program director, the burden fell in my lap. I sure as heck couldn't pay him out of my personal bank account. I remember pleading my case to Willie's entourage and hoping that I wouldn't get lynched. Shortly after that Willie moved away and started an extended tour across the country. I didn't see Willie again until about 1974 and he had become a world wide phenomenon in the meantime. I was an emcee when he was performing at a concert in the Astrodome with several other artists. I was a bit nervous when he spotted me across the crowded dressing room. I held my breath as he walked toward me. To my surprise he greeted me like a long lost friend. I didn't mention how he didn't get paid for that concert back in 1968. To my relief he didn't mention it either.
CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) I remember reading where a top announcer in Los Angeles was a truck driver between working stations. As for as Smooth Jazz often it was not Jazz they played, like KOAI would play the Doobie Brothers, I like the group but definitely not Jazz. John Coltrane did smooth Jazz but they did not play his music. Thanks too my HD Radio I can hear Smooth Jazz on KMVK -2, though no announcers; however; I think it is hard to work as an announcer doing Jazz unless you are Clint Eastwood. I liked Hugh Lampmen (sp), Kenny Sargent (sp), and Jack Schell they could carry a program of Jazz. When I was taking Algebra there were two guys in my class from Buckner Baptist Homes. They already had licenses and worked at KNER 881. now the frequency is used by KNTU. KNTU tends to play more of the Jazz I like: Miles Davis, Gerry Mulligan, Wes Montgomery( real smooth Jazz), Bessie Smith. I think styles of announcing interesting, some announcers are better at switching styles as needed. Like I find some tell jokes that cause me to switch channels while others can keep me listening. Charles P. S. Another summer I was at the park sitting when a person gave me a job helping him plant rose bushes, etc. Love is a Rose but you better not pick it only grows when on the vine.
TRIVIA ANSWER: Canadian Rock group The Guess Who performs at the White House in 1970 for President and Mrs. Richard M. Nixon along with Prince Charles. But First Lady Pat Nixon requests they not sing their biggest American hit, American Women, because of its anti-American lyrics.
