ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
MEXICO: APOCALYPSE NOW!
All the media is in a stir. The fourth estate is abuzz. Cable TV warns about the threat of swine flu as it invades the land we love. Top talk is: Will a face mask help to protect me? How often shall we wash our hands? Are there enough anti-viral drugs? Is now for sure the time for America to finally come to its senses and completely close off our border with Mexico to put a stop to this newest invasion to our motherland? Or is it too late to turn back now? On Sunday, April 26, 2009 The Mexican government announces the death toll of swine flu cases nationwide balloons to 149. At least 1,614 incidents of swine flu come in from the other side of the Rio Grande. Mexico City usually overflows with activity but reports indicate 70% of restaurants and bars close their doors over the weekend. Those who do open serve only a few patrons. Many choose to sit outside. One bar owner mentions that he understands the closure is indefinite. Symptoms of the deadly strain of swine flu virus arrive in such far away places as the UK. Simon Calder Travel Editor of London's The Independent pleads: Keep calm and carry on...please. Jeremy Laurance Health Editor of the Independent admits: That's just what we needed – a global pandemic. Getting drugs to those in need is the biggest challenge. Mexico City dwellers hunker down during the weekend but some return to work on Monday morning. This metropolis normally teems with activity but now Mexican citizens worry. In the streets, inhabitants cling to their portable radios or newspapers to learn as much information as they can on this potentially deadly virus. Once again, terrestrial radio and newspaper print come to the rescue to inform listeners and readers in times like these. Marcelo Ebrard, Mayor of Mexico City, warns that city government considers precautionary measures that even include the possible shut down of public transportation. Does this mean eventual martial law? Only the shadow knows. Stay tuned to this bat channel.

LEGENDARY HOUSTON SOUL SELLS OUT
For at least the past couple of years KCOH Incorporated has longtime R&B KCOH-1430's picture glass studios at 5011 Alameda on the market for an estimated $10 million. KCOH is a 5000 watt AM radio station with 1000 watts of nighttime power. In 1979, a DJ friend of mine from KXOL-1360 days, Reuben T. Washington, who has a mid-day show on KCOH, takes me on a tour of the facilities. The control room looks through large double-pane glass out onto the heavy traffic of Almeda. Listeners on the sidewalks and in their cars wave at their favorite DJs through the looking glass. Although KCOH plays sweet Soul music (Urban Contemporary) its owner is a white dude. Since then its format flips to Music Talkradio. Well, Glory be! Paraclete Church Ministries of Houston comes on down with a $1.25 million lower bid which drops the total price to $8.75 million. Sold!
TRIVIA QUESTION: None of the Statler Brothers are Statlers. Only two really are brothers. Where do they find the name Statler? The answer appears below.

JIM TRAVIS (Hot Springs, AR) I grew up in Houston. We moved there in 1954. I went to Smiley High. I was listening the day KILT came on. The clip on KCOH was good. They had some really cool DJ's. Some that stand out were Dizzy Lizzie, One Brain Zing Zang and of course Daddy Deep. My all time favorite Houston jock was Joel A. Spevack. His father was a Big Band leader in the 40's. I wonder what became of Richard Dobbin? I know he died. But where did he go after KILT? I went to a KILT remote at a big car dealership when Bill Slater was trying to break the record for staying awake and broadcasting the longest. He did not make it. The midnight to six DJ Jeff Davis at KNUZ let me come to the station one night to watch him work. From that moment on I was hooked on radio. I don't remember too much about it except the echo chamber. Ii was in a back room if memory serves correct. (

JOAN PATE-DAY (Cedar Creek Lake, TX) Hey there? Haven't forgotten you Jim, been under the weather. Sam (Pate) is still hanging on. His memory is slipping even more. After talking with him on the telephone, I don't know whether to laugh or cry. For example, he told me I should see the flowers in his backyard, they are beautiful. Then silence and he said "what was I saying?" I said "the flowers in your yard are beautiful" to which he replied "Oh I didn't know you had seen them." By the time our phone calls are over, I feel like I am in a fog. Yet he still recalls his radio days and the guys he worked with. I feel this was such a part of his life he will not forget. When we finished our last phone conversation, he told me he loved me and said "This is Sam Pate...First on the scene." Bet the guys who worked with him get a smile out of that.
BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) I received this Ferlin Husky update (noon Friday) and wanted to pass it along. The doctors did a little shock treatment to get Ferlin's heart back in rhythm. After the procedure, Ferlin asked his doctor if they saw any smoke when they were shocking his heart! He is doing better and hopefully will be released soon. We think that Simon Crum will be released at the same time. For cards and letters; Ferlin Husky, P.O. Box 777, Vienna, Mo. 65582
TRIVIA ANSWER: The Statler Brothers come up with their name from the Statler brand of tissues. Don (lead singer) and Harold (bass voice) Reid are brothers. Phillip Baisley is baritone. Lou DeWitt sings tenor. In 1983, Jimmy Fortune replaces Lou because of his health. Jimmy writes and sings lead on one of my favorite tunes, Elizabeth, which lands at #1 in the first part of 1984. Jimmy also writes More Than Just A Name which captures #6 in summer 1989. Sadly, on August 15, 1990 Lou DeWitt dies of Crohn's Disease.

JAY PENNINGTON (San Antonio-Boerne, TX) Subject: Jazz vs. Smooth Jazz. Hi Jim, In your last issue Charles was talking about Smooth Jazz vs. Jazz. This subject is very close to my heart. Jazz is an American invention which is based on "improvisations of a standard". Smooth Jazz doesn't do improvisation or jamming solos so I don't consider Smooth Jazz to be any part of Jazz. Smooth Jazz typically is heavily orchestrated planned out before recorded and typically just a melody that continues on using very few percussive instruments or heavy beats which fits well in elevators or mindless music for the background at the office. With those being the definition of Jazz and the definition of Smooth Jazz I would not say that John Coltrane played Smooth Jazz - heaven forbid! Coltrane did do some albums with Duke Ellington which were the "softer side of John Coltrane" but in those recordings he was still doing jamming solos while improvising on standards. Now Cool Jazz is a style of true Jazz which you could site early Miles Davis, Wes Montgomery, Chet Baker, etc. Maybe one of the best Jazz radio stations around is KRTU which is Trinity University in San Antonio 91.7 but you can listen to it live from any city via the Internet at www.krtu.org. KRTU plays Jazz from the 20's all the way up to today and they don't play Smooth Jazz. Between the songs they tell you who was playing and often include a bit of explanation or historic importance or who all the musicians were on that cut. Aaron Prado is a God send for the station who grew up in a musical Jazz family and he is on KRTU many hours each day. P.S. My KEXL of the 70's page continues to expand www.penningtontechnicalarts.com/KEXL. Thanks, Jim! Jay
ELVIN JONES (September 9, 1927-May 18, 2004) I feel very very gratified when people are complimentary to what I have done or appreciated it with sincerity. It makes me feel that maybe I did do something that was proper and that was right.
