CLEAR CHANNEL'S FLU EPIDEMIC SPREADS FROM COAST TO COAST!
As its 2008 Fiscal Year begins under private ownership Clear Channel Radio harshly cuts costs. Many CCR victims in Dallas, Houston, Minneapolis, Richmond, Fort Myers, Youngstown and Detroit. In 2009, CCR's East coast markets are some of its first victims. Next is the Midwest and then the Pacific radio centers. Recently, CCR cuts 590 positions after the already 1850 who vanish in January 2009. This includes its entire corporate marketing division. The majority of its cuts are in sales. Several high profile programmers and personalities also leave the CCR buildings. Brian Fowler and Joe Cronauer longtime morning show duo on CCR Hot AC WMVX FM (106.5) in Cleveland, OH are off the air on Tuesday, April 28, 2009. Joe says that he and his co-host receive phone calls on Monday night not to show up for their Brian and Joe Show which usually airs from 5-10 am weekdays. Also on Tuesday, Skip Mahaffey exits mornings on CCR Country WFUS FM (US 103.5) Tampa-Gulfport, FL. Ryan Seacrest’s popular syndicated show replaces some of the personalities who fall under the axe. CCR suspends its 401(k) employee-matching program. Many CCR radio stations have a clean bill of health but others look around to see who is left. The latest wave of unemployment at CCR raises its fiery head two weeks after its managers meeting in Dallas, TX. Some back office functions now fall into automation. CCR says this move catches them up with modern business practices.

KEITH BILBREY (Nashville, TN) So sad at the passing of "The Voice". Vern Gosdin was a great friend.

JONATHAN FRICKE (Nashville, TN) Jim, Not sure of who wrote the story, the 'source' but thought I would send this along in case you haven't heard. Country star Vern Gosdin dies at 74. (April 29, 2009) Country music star Vern Gosdin, known for such hits as "Set 'em Up Joe" and "I Can Tell By the Way You Dance (You're Gonna Love Me Tonight)," died at midnight tonight. He was 74. Gosdin, who suffered "a pretty bad stroke" about three weeks ago, died peacefully in his sleep at a Nashville hospital, his administrative assistant Dawn Hall said this morning. A one-time band mate of The Byrds' Chris Hillman, Gosdin covered a variety of musical styles, working early in a bluegrass act and even writing a song that appeared on the soundtrack to the rock biker classic Easy Rider. But Gosdin found his greatest success doing mainstream country, as he scored No. 1 singles with "I Can Tell by the Way You Dance," the Ernest Tubb quasi-tribute "Set 'Em Up" and "I'm Still Crazy." His recording of "Chiseled in Stone" claimed the Country Music Association's song of the year honor in 1989, and George Strait found success by rerecording Gosdin's hit "Today My World Slipped Away." He was born in Woodland, Ala., on Aug. 5, 1934. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Jonathan

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX)
Country music singer, songwriter & guitarist, Vern "The Voice" Gosdin died in Nashville @ 74 on Wed, April 29, 2009, after complications from an earlier stroke. Born in Woodland, AL, he was on the radio in Birmingham in the 50's & moved to Calif in 1960 & formed The Golden State Boys with his brother Rex, recording together as the Gosdin Bros. (Brother Rex died on 5/23/83 at age 45). Vern had over 30 chart hits, including duos with Emmylou Harris and three Number One solo hits in 1984, 1988 & 1989. He was inducted into the ALA Music Hall of Fame in 2005. BOB & Sonny Lee

JAY PENNINGTON (San Antonio-Boerne, TX) Nice to hear from you Jim! Having "bottom line" marketing people run radio instead of music minded people can certainly kill things. Same thing in movies - we rented The Day the Earth Stood Still last night - there was no reason to remake such a classic but actually the new movie was not even close to the classic in the story/plot - but I noticed a LOT of product placements in the movie - marketing and making money over art - McDonalds got a lot of advertising in the movie, LG and Casio got their own commercials, Coke...so marketing and product placement was a big factor in the movie like marketing can ruin radio stations. Although this was the perfect role for Keanu Reeves where the character is stiff and emotionless and under acting. I had heard that vinyl was becoming popular again. I've wondered about that. With individual songs just floating from the Internet into your iPod there is nothing tangible - no pictures, no story, nothing to put your hands on...whereas an album was always kind of an adventure and a piece of art and collectable...a song on the iPod is just digital to be erased later. GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX)
Hello Jim, I have been following the news about Ferlin Husky. Like everyone else who met him or even knew about him I wish him a speedy and full recovery. I remembered an occasion when I was getting ready to introduce him on the stage of the Municipal Auditorium in San Antonio. It was probably about 1968 when I worked for KBER As a courtesy and out of respect for the artist I would always ask each performer if he had any special introduction he would like for me to use. Nearly all of the others had some unique way of introduction they requested. For instance, Ray Price was the Cherokee Cowboy etc. I'll never forget how Ferlin just smiled and said, "just tell 'em here comes old Dumb A**". No, I didn't say it even though I know he would have gotten a kick out of it. George Lester

TRIVIA ANSWER: When TV broadcasts first hit our screens in the Fabulous Fifties the only means to preserve video footage is by kinescope. The video is somewhat muddy because in kinescope a special motion picture camera photographs a TV monitor. That's why most TV networks make live broadcasts direct from the studio.

BARRY KILGORE (Houston-Conroe, TX)
Subject: Real radio. The Eric Chase on TKO's web cast is who we know as Paul Christy in Houston. He was very well known on the west coast as Eric Chase --stations like KHJ -LA, KFRC- San Francisco--whole bunch of them. Big time heavy weight jock. When he came to KRBE about the same time I did, there was already an Eric Chase on the air here. That Chase is still in Houston doing booth announcing for "The Tube" TV and commercial v/os. 2 Barry Kayes huh...but is the other one the boooooooogie man! --scratching and clawing here. The Family Law show is getting some coverage and I just did an interview for Texas Escapes Magazine, did a couple of appearances with a group out of New Jersey on some I-radio broadcast called Talkshoe. Hope all is well with you. Barry Kilgore, Family Law Radio (

COUNT LEO TOLSTOY (August 28, 1828-1910) I sit on a man's back, choking him and making him carry me, and yet assure myself and others that I am very sorry for him and wish to ease his lot by all possible means -- except by getting off his back.
