HAPPY MOTHERS' DAY! (May 10, 2009)
ARE YOU READY FOR DIGITAL TV?
If we do not already have one of the expensive new high definition TV sets in our homes we lose all of our favorite programs after the governmental mandate to switch our sets to the new analog-to-digital broadcast becomes reality. Our TV screens quickly fade to black if we do not prepare for the latest government dictate. TV Max, my cable TV provider, sends out a warning that if I do not let them hook up my 10 year old 32" RCA TV to their new digital box my TV screen goes blank. TV Week reports that 3.1% of U.S. homes still are not ready for the DTV switchover. That's my category. All of a sudden it happens! Uh oh! No TV picture! So I call the number on the TV Max bulletin notice. They quickly dispatch (well several hours later) one of their highly qualified TV technicians who hooks up my TV to a brand new black box which means that I can once again watch Dog, The Bounty Hunter, Andy Griffith Show, Cops, Fox TV News and Dallas Cowboys football! This new black box that rests on top of my TV has its own remote control. It has TV channels from CH8 to well over CH300 and maybe more! Wonders never cease to amaze and delight us!

CRESCENT CITY TV WEATHERCASTER EVAPORATES
WWL-TV CH4 in New Orleans, LA does not renew its weekend weathercaster Dawn Brown's contract. The UCLA graduate joins WWL's weather staff after Hurricane Katrina's flood waters demolish the Crescent City. On Thursday evening, April 23, 2009 Dawn announces her intentions to stay in New Orleans and pursue a higher degree with the goal of an eventual teaching career. I'll still be here. Chris Slaughter, WWL News Director, avows the move is not an economy-driven layoff. We are planning to replace her. Recently, WWL-TV lays off several off-camera employees.

MARY LYNN KNOCHELMAN (Cincinnati, OH) Subject: WLW Radio Reduces Sports Staff. Jim...Please go to www.cincinnati.com to get the story itself. I at the moment can't send it to you because my computer is disabled as far as being able to get on the internet. Hopefully it will be repaired in a few days. I can't even read your Jim Rose Remembers Radio Newsletters, but don't stop sending them to me. I'll enjoy reading them once my computer is back to 100% working. Anyway you might already be aware that Clear Channel laid off 250 employees nationwide yesterday. Here in Cincinnati it included employees of WCKY and WLW , including WLW Sports Talk Host Paul Daugherty! Paul's not unemployed though. He never gave up his job as a Cincinnati Enquirer newspaper columnist, while doing the dual job of Sports Talk host for two years, replacing Andy Furman, who now does PR work for Jake Sweeney Chevrolet in Cincinnati, Ohio. Please read the article yourself to get the names of the other radio employees axed! Thanks, Mary Lynn Knochelman

LEON BECK (Houston-Friendswood, TX) Hi Jim, Just wanted you to know that the legendary Gene Thomas, who is currently recording a new CD in Houston with A.V. BARRY KILGORE (Houston-Conroe, TX) Jim---Many thanks to Jay Pennington for turning me on to KRTU in San Antonio. Freaking awesome jazz!! Check it out on the net. (www.krtu.org) Barry Kilgore
BLAKE LINDSAY (D/FW-Addison, TX) I hope you are doing great Jim. I sure appreciate and look forward to reading each of your columns. I learn lots about things I am interested in, and it is fun when you include people's take on a variety of topics also. Your Friend, Blazin' Blake Lindsay (www.blazinblake.com)
JOHN HALE (Austin-Cedar Park, TX) Jim, I love jazz, classic and smooth. I listened to it when everybody else was into the teen idols. I don't see classic jazz and smooth jazz being an either/or choice. It's okay to like Miles Davis and Chris Botti, Wes Montgomery and Chuck Loeb. What I don't like is smooth jazz radio. The programmers have mostly missed the boat by tightly formatting it, and using a restrictive playlist that excludes classic jazz. Change is inevitable. Rockabilly eventually turned into new wave, soul into quiet storm. Smooth jazz evolved out of Dave Brubeck and John Coltrane, and presented properly, is anything but elevator music. Smooth jazz programmers have also not properly promoted the format. It will never be a majority music, but can reach an affluent niche audience, which should attract some heavyweight advertisers. Smooth jazz radio would be smart to mix smooth and classic jazz, and leave Marvin Gaye and the Temptations to jammin' radio. Smooth jazz does NOT have to be draggy, its announcers don't have to sound bored, and the jingles should be jingles, not instrumental pads. I agree that smooth jazz isn't your daddy's jazz, but I'd hate not having it, and classic jazz, to listen to. Yours Truly, John Hale
DAN MCCURDY (Sherman, TX) You're right about Chuck Dunaway...nice guy...probably the greatest 'Top 40 voice' I've ever heard...but he used to scare me when I would pop into the control room for a visit during his PM drivetime gig...we'd be talking about something, then as a break came up, he would glance at me, just to make sure that I was paying attention...then he would start spouting a vile stream of obscenities and vulgar invectives, 5-10 seconds before throwing the mic switch open, stopping the foul stream in a nano-second when throwing the switch on and brightly saying, "Hey, there gang, you've got the Chuck baby Round Mound of Sound program right here on the Mighty 1190, KLIF, bumper-to-bumper between now and about 6...gladda have ya on board..." Then he would go to a spot or hit a record and in another nano-second flip off the mic and continue his hot stream of Carlin-like cussin' for a few seconds, as if he'd never stopped (ala Stan Freburg)...and turn around to gleefully see my eyes as big as pie plates, hyperventilating at the disaster he just skated around like a Kristi Yamaguchi ice-show. I may be complimenting myself too much here, but I certainly got the feeling that Chuck did his intricate ballet-of-'no-no'-words just to blow the mind of the newest kid on the block, who just happened to be me. His ploy worked. And he freaked me out every time. Dan McCurdy - Charlie Brown/Dan Patrick, KLIF, KBOX-Dallas; WMEX-Boston; 2004 Texas Radio Hall of Fame Inductee.
TRIVIA ANSWER: Ray Stevens turns down Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head because he doesn't like it. And the rest is history.
BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) I have toured President James Madison's home at Montpelier (Station), VA. Many years ago that home was owned by Marion DuPont, who was once married to actor Randolph Scott (1898-1987). Scott was born in that county (Orange Co. VA) & graduates from the private Woodberry Forest School nearby. He is buried in hometown of his parents, where he was raised, Charlotte, NC. (Elmwood Cemetery) Scott made his final film at age 64 in 1962, "Ride the High Country." Thought: "There was a woman that had so many children she ran out of names....to call her husband." Minnie Pearl (1912-1996) Have a great week. BOB & Sonny Lee
J.M. BARRIE (May 9, 1860-June 19, 1937) God gave us memories that we might have roses in December.
