FNC HAS A NEW BABY
Janice Dean, whom we affectionately love and adore as The Weather Machine, returns to Fox News Channel from her maternity leave on Monday, May 04, 2009. She says I do in 2008. He says I will try. Janice's new baby boy arrives on January 24, 2009. His name is Matthew. Dean gets emotional: Thank goodness [Glenn Beck] made crying okay on television. In the current issue of Pregnancy and Newborn Magazine Janice talks about her newborn baby boy and how it is to live with multiple sclerosis, I feel like I'm one of the lucky ones. Two-and-a-half years ago Janice Dean receives a diagnosis of MS. Neil Cavuto of Fox Business News also has MS.

GARY MICHAEL ROSS (Greensboro, NC) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio Issue #472. Enjoyed reading about 790 KULF days (albeit one year after you posted it)...I recall our coming out party in the Cork Club, Dick French introducing the new crew...I came from Portland as did Andy Barber...as I recall the dayparts, Mike Mann followed London & Engleman, then myself...Andy Barber afternoons and Coyote Calhoun 7-12m...clearly you and Hank Moore had most of the ears doing the Oldies show. Kenny Miles replaced London and Engleman w/his dead on Jimmy Carter stuff. I lasted until John Long and Rusty Black came to town. I had three radio stops after Houston...7 years in St. Louis (KSD-FM), 6 yrs in Phoenix (KOOL) and 11 yrs in Greensboro, NC. The final shoe dropped in June 2006 w/Entercom...format change, at that point I called it a career. I'm now the Assistant Athletics Director at University of North Carolina Greensboro Thanks. Gary Michael Ross

KULF-790
In 1978, when I move over from the noon-3pm DJ spot on Dave Morris' Country KNUZ-1230 here in Houston, TX to Harte-Hanks Top 40 KULF-790, Bill Bosse is the GM and Steve Roddy is the PD. From 1978-80 we witness some of America's top radio talent come and go through the doors of the Super 79 penthouse suite high atop 2100 Travis Street. In 1979, Dick French arrives from RKO Top 40 WHBQ-560 in Memphis, TN as KULF's new GM. Dick's wife becomes the GM of sister station Beautiful Music KYND FM (92.9). KULF listeners hear my voice in several different time spots. Eventually, I end up on 7pm-midnight. This is in addition to the Oldies but Goodies show on Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons that Hank Moore and I host. Both of us are avid record collectors with a boatload of Oldies trivia in our photographic memories. One Saturday night Hank is absent but in his place are two more Oldies buffs from KTRK TV CH13 - Ed Brandon (Chief Meterologist), Bob Allen (Sports Director) and the lovely Jan Glenn (morning TV talk show hostess). Very difficult to recall a more fun time on the radio. In 1979, we have several different morning shows: Steve Lundy, London (Jon) & Engleman (Ron) and Stevens (Mark) & Pruett (Jim). Next, Coyote Calhoun rolls in from WAKY-790 in Louisville, KY for the 7pm-midnight fling. This gives me a much needed rest from 7 days a week on the radio. KULF decides to have a huge elegant shindig in the former Cork Club in our penthouse suite. Top members of ad agencies, other media, plus hand-picked high-dollar company representatives are on the A list. French outfits us DJs in black tuxedos for KULF Party Night. That evening, I return to the 7pm-midnight DJ throne. Special guest artists at the event are England Dan and John Ford Coley who ride Billboard at #10 with Love Is the Answer. After their performance, the Pop duo heads for the boom box studio for an interview on my show. Two more nice and talented individuals in the music industry do not exist. From time to time groups of party guests enter the radio control room. This can be chaos but I let them participate in my show. Like in live TV studio audiences, I give them the que to shout all together the KULF call letters and other silly things. Really is a fun night. Calhoun vacates KULF to return to Louisville as the PD of Country WAMZ FM (97.5) and keeps it at the top of the ARB charts ever since. Then, Dick French hires his former WHBQ PD, John Long, as our new PD. John brings along his production manager Rusty Black. Soon, Long places me in the noon-3pm position on KULF. Really is wonderful but this means 7 days a week for me on the airwaves. No problem because I have plenty experience in double-duty. One day as I exit the elevator to go on the air at noon, Hank Moore stands there. He says that the new PD tells him to leave the building permanently. After I get off the air at 3pm, receive the same shipping orders but with no vaya con dios. Kenny Miles finishes his show at 7pm. He calls me at home with the news of his final departure. A one-two-three knock out punch. This is 1980 but it seems like yesterday once more. Bill Young hires me to spin Album Rock tunes on KILT FM. Since 1965, many top radio stations in the Texas Triangle fit inside my long radio resume but none make me happier than then at KILT FM. But, as I come to expect, it doesn't last long because in 1981 both KILTs flip to Country. Deja vu all over again.

HAROLD GUNN (Houston, TX)
Jim, By the way, the Doug Johnson that is Pres. of Johnson Broadcasting is not Doug the weather man. I know them both and they are not the same person. HG

MIKE MARSHALL (Houston, TX) Subject: Doug Johnson. Jim, I'm sure several subscribers have told you by now, the Doug Johnson who runs Channel 51 is a different guy, same name, as the former Channel 2 weatherman. Mike Marshall

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) Jim, Just subscribed to Jimmy Fortune's newsletter, thx again to you! Best to you & Tejas. BOB & Sonny Lee

TRIVIA ANSWER: Our World is the first live, international, satellite TV production which airs on June 25, 1967 at the height of the Vietnam War. We probably most remember The Beatles segment where they sing a message of peace and love to the inhabitants of planet earth - All You Need Is Love. Approximately 400 million viewers around the world watch the entire broadcast. Elvis Presley's Aloha From Hawaii satellite TV broadcast on January 14, 1973 at the Honolulu International Center Arena is the first global satellite broadcast from a single entertainer. The broadcast reaches over one billion people worldwide. We here in the good ole USA have to wait until April 4, 1973 to see Elvis Presley's Aloha From Hawaii when The King of Rock and Roll is at his finest.

DR. BRUCE NELSON-STRATTON
The Cash was an lp cut but don't remember which one. MY book goes to 2005. I think the Cash cut gained some prominence w/the TV commercial featuring his cut over the last few years. Have a good wknd Jim. Will be 66 May 15th and still hangin' after 51 years on air. Meanwhile CC continues to destroy radio as we knew it...SAD. (
