KUNG FU ACTOR PASSES INTO THE NIGHT
One of my very favorite actors dies tragically in Bangkok. Police find TV and movie actor David Carradine whom we remember best as Shoalin priest Kwai Chang Caine in the TV series Kung Fu hung by the neck in his luxury hotel room at Swissotel Nai Lert Park in the Thai capital. Michael Turner, spokesman for the U.S. Embassy, confirms the death of the 72-year-old David Carradine. He says the embassy receives information by Thai authorities that Carradine dies either late Wednesday, June 3, 2009 or early Thursday. This comes as such a tremendous shock to us fans of his. The Web site of the Thai newspaper The Nation reports that Carradine is in Bangkok to shoot a movie, Stretch, and has a room at the hotel since Tuesday. The newspaper also says that no one can contact Carradine after he fails to appear for a meal with the rest of the film crew on Wednesday. A hotel maid finds his body at 10 am on Thursday morning. David is a leading member of the venerable Hollywood Carradine acting family that includes his father John Carradine and brother Keith. During his career Carradine appears in more than 100 feature films. We remember him best as the Shoalin priest who travels through the American frontier West in the 1800s in the TV series Kung Fu which we see from 1972-75. R.I.P. David Carradine.

TERRESTRIAL RADIO HAS A BETTER IDEA!
In the early 1950s radio stations receive their first scare when TV appears in most of our homes. But radio comes back when a genius like Gordon McLendon in Dallas, TX invents Top 40 radio on KLIF-1190. Bill Haley, Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Fats Domino and other great performers bring us Rock 'N' Roll! Wow! Radio once again dominates with hit records and hot local news with instant on-the-scene mobile news reports! Top flight DJs like Ken Dowe, Chuck Dunaway, Frank Jolley, Jimmy Rabbitt, Mike Selden, Dan McCurdy, Joe Ford, Barry Kaye, C.C. McCartney, John Steel, Jay West, Ben Laurie. Let's not leave out the PDs like Mike O'Shea. How about terrific newscasters such as Brad Messer, Frank Haley, Gary DeLaune, Dick Glancey, Dick Mock, Sam Pate, Robert B. McEntire, Jim Carolla, John Wesley Downey? News Directors like Joe Long and Ted Agnew. Radio managers Bill Weaver, Charles F. Payne and Al Lurie bring it all together on the Mighty 1190. Radio is the most thrilling place to be in the entire world! Radio is fun and very exciting. KLIF totally dominates Dallas radio ratings from the Fabulous Fifties to the early 1970s. In 1971, News Director Joe Long puts me on KBOX-1480 as a newscaster, special events coverage and mobile news reporter. In 1972, Ted Agnew lures me over to KLIF-1190. Memories are made of this. Be sure to tell all of your radio friends to sign up (rosekkkj@earthlink.net) and join our discussion as JRRR brings back fond radio memories of when radio is real. Tune in the Monday, June 8, 2009 issue of JRRR for the next exciting chapter in our wonderful radio reality voyage.

JOANIE GREEN-GALLO (Tulsa, OK) Hi Jim! I have moved here already and I am looking for work in the Tulsa area...your help is immeasurable! It was a pleasant surprise to see your contacts listed and I shall be in touch with the people right away. I only know about Tulsa from my visits to this city to see my family - they moved here many years ago (my mom from Wisconsin and my sister through marriage). I am currently staying with mom until I get settled and can strike out on my own. My mother lives in the Brookside area of Tulsa, about 2 blocks from the Philbrook Museum (a rolling estate that rivals Miss Ima's palatial digs). And from what she tells me, Roy Clark's residence is around the corner from us. What gets me the most right now are the big hills...just not used to them after being in Houston for so long - I recall stories my sister told me of cars rolling down the hills during ice/snow storms. It's pretty here from what I've seen so far in my jaunts. We went to the symphony the other night at the PAC (Performing Arts Center) and I'm trying to learn what I can about my new home and surrounding area. Please know that I am keeping you in my prayers regarding your loss. I empathize with you because of the grief I felt when I lost my beloved dog, "Friday." Thank you again for your information and I'll keep you updated on what happens! Joan
GENE STUMP (Baltimore, MD) Hello Jim, Many thanks for forwarding my info to Dan and putting me on your mailing list. I was reading a bunch of the older newsletters as my Google searches for Dan took me there. You are doing a fine job. Take care, I will be back in touch. Gene
WHERE DO YOU READ JRRR? Tell us how far away from Houston, TX that you read JRRR. Send your full name, city, state and country of residence to
LEON BECK (Houston-Friendswood, TX) Jim, Thanks so much. Rusty was a KILT DJ in the '80s and was the MC at Gilley's and hosted Gilley's live radio show. Jeff also hosted Gilley's live radio show when it was broadcast on KENR. Thanks again. I appreciate it. Regards, Leon (www.musiccitynews.com)
JOAN PATE-DAY (Cedar Creek Lake,TX) Subject: Sam Pate. Sam's memory is worsening but he still knows everyone. Just repeats things a lot. Thanks for asking. You're a pretty swell guy to think of others when you are having such a hard time. Reckon you're still pretty lonely. things will get better...keep telling yourself that.
MIKE HARTMAN (Ft. Worth-Joshua, TX) Jim...Not every pet owner can say that he/she had the kind of friendship that you and Tejas had. The blessing of your having her in your life was not a one way street she was blessed to have you in her life. Just think...she could have wound up in an abusive home. My friend, you did a good job. I know...it wasn't a job...to you. But, to some people it is. You were not only her master...but her friend, as well. Your job, in the case of Tejas, is spelled "Joy". Leave this void in the hands of the good Lord. He will fill it His way, and in His time. You have a lot of friends praying for you...I'm one of them. I know we never have met...So, we'll just consider ourselves Cyber friends. Hang in there, Jim. Thanks for the comments about "Peanut".
WALTER HAMMOCK (Houston, TX) The low pay changed when I went into sales which is truly the only way anyone made any money in radio from the 70's on. Back in the 50's and 60's a jock might make some money but the big money was and is always in sales. Sad but true. I'm sorry about your dog. I have a cat and know how much of a friend he is to me and I can understand the pain you are going through. They are far more than just animals to us, they are family.
JIMMY RABBITT (Grand Junction, CO) "Back On The Beach" with Jimmy Rabbitt Saturday June 6th, 2009 from 3PM-6PM PDT 6PM-9PM EDT 11PM-2AM GMT on 101.5 KOCI FM Newport Beach, California. Catch the stream on: www.KOCIRadio.com twitter at: http://twitter.com/elconejo09 (http://JJradio.com/) The next "Rock n' Blues Lab" with Jimmy Rabbitt Tuesday June 9th 2-5pm CDT on http://KAFMradio.org/
TRIVIA ANSWER: Lacy J Dalton's name comes from a friend by the name of Lacy. The J is from her own name Jill. Her singing teacher's name is Karen Dalton.
BOB CROWLEY (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Carla Marion, who got fired from KRLD the Friday before she returned from maternity leave, had her first shift on WBAP this past week. She took the anchor chair and Amy Chodroff subbed for Hal Jay as Interlocutor. She did good. Just finished a great book: Robert Gates: From the Shadows. How five presidents won the cold war. Interesting stuff, and highly recommended. BOB
