ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

TERRESTRIAL RADIO HAS AN IDEA!
From 1971-72 while a newscaster on Wonderful KBOX-1480 I have the esteem pleasure of the company of DJs like The Weird Beard Russ Knight and Ron Rice (dies 1973). Joe Long (dies 1972) and Dick Moore are long time KBOX newscasters. KBOX at 9900 McRea Road in Big D is a great place to be. In 1972, Ted Agnew makes me an offer that I absolutely cannot refuse to be a newscaster on the Mighty 1190 KLIF in my hometown Dallas, TX. Michael O'Shea is the wonderful PD. Newscasters include the exciting Bruce Hughes (deceased). Probably the best radio DJ in existence Mike Selden (deceased) drives people home in Dallas' rush hour traffic. McLendon's Houston affiliate KILT-610 has the fabulous Robert B. McEntire and Jim Carolla. Ahhh the list goes on and on. So many fine broadcasters and great radio stations that I run across all over Texas. We have to extend our radio memories to yet another issue of JRRR. Be sure to tell all of your friends in radio to sign up (

A MARRIAGE MADE IN BRIMSTONE

Sound familiar? Remember when in 2001 in the glory days of dot-com when AOL buys Time Warner to create the world's largest media company? Time Warner's stock shoots up at breakneck speed 39% to $90.06. J. Michael Kelly. AOL's CFO says at a news conference, The new company will have more than 100 million paying subscribers, including AOL's dial-up customers and Time Warner's cable and magazine subscribers. Soon, AOL becomes an albatross around Time Warner's neck. In 2003, there is a trial separation where AOL's name disappears from the big sign out front. By 2009 the two parties finally call it quits. The divorce now reaches its final stages as Time Warner directors vote on Thursday, May 28, 2009 to spin off AOL as a separate, standalone public company by the end of 2009. Both parties bid adios, farewell, auf weidersein and good night.

DR. JEFF CUNNINGHAM (Austin-Kyle, TX)
As a young broadcast engineer, I came to rely on Steve Schott for advice and encouragement through the ups and downs of the business. If you will recall, the 1980's were a time when "loudness" wars hit radio and the engineer became the station's MVP if he agreed to demands to break good ethical practices for the sake of non-sense. Steve was one of those guys I would call on when I was ready to murder a GM or PD. He was a good man that never said a bad word about anyone. I haven't spoken with Steve in quite a few years. I lost track of him after I left radio and eventually became a chiropractor. But I know a good man when I see one. This has been a tough month or so. Tejas was a dog I bonded with immediately and grew to love in just a very few moments. Steve Schott was the kind of person that Tejas was: kind, loyal and always there when needed. There has to be a special place in heaven for both of them. Jeff Cunningham, DC Kyle, TX (

ANOTHER SMOOTH JAZZ BITES THE DUST
WJCD FM (107.7) Norfolk/Virginia Beach, VA cannot seem to find its niche. Over the years it flips from Urban AC to Smooth Jazz to AC back to Smooth Jazz and now Oldies. The format name Smooth Jazz never rings a bell with listeners in any radio market except San Diego, CA. Lite Jazz is totally out. What is a good name for Smooth Jazz? Current Smooth Jazz radio stations sound like elevator music for funeral parlors. They need lively DJs who get all excited about the music they play with up to the minute newscasts and timely contests. The music doesn't die. It's the present concept behind it which lacks originality. Someone needs to add a bright touch to Smooth Jazz radio and ditch that moniker! Oh, how I miss radio programming!

JOHN HALE (Austin-Cedar Park, TX) Hi Jim, It's not a surprise, given how uniformly poorly they're (Smooth Jazz) programmed. I've listened all over and they're clones of each other no matter the city. Same music, same contests, same ultra laid back announcers...if some new ideas, or reworked old ideas, aren't injected into the format and soon there'll be no more smooth jazz over the air. I'm actually like you in hating the name smooth jazz. I think calling them "Jazz" stations, and letting them play both old and new jazz would make them at least a bit more interesting. Yours Truly, John Hale, Mobile Magic Music, 512.336.8742 (33.Music) "We're at the best parties!"

MAXIE is the name of John Hale’s precious doggie. About a week ago, Maxie swallows something that lodges inside his stomach. John says that his diagnosis delays two days, which causes him to lose nearly two feet of his intestines. Maxie finally receives an operation on Friday night, May 29, 2009. But John says the vet releases Maxie to return home way too soon and he develops a massive infection. The poor fella has to endure another operation on Wednesday as he loses more of his intestines. Right now Maxie is at the South Austin Animal Emergency Clinic as he fights for his life. John says that it's touch and go whether he'll survive. I'm heartbroken that my boy's going through this. All of my thoughts and prayers are on his survival right now. Just as you were in my prayers, I'm asking you to pray for Maxie's recovery. I believe in the power of prayer strongly. Let's all join hands and pray that our friend John Hale's precious doggie Maxie survives his ordeal and comes back home in perfect health. Prayer is the key.

BOB CROWLEY (D/FW-Arlington, TX)
Well, Jim, I finally made it over to KTFW/KFWR to visit with Bill Thorman. Cousin Billy and I had a great time, swapping stories and such. Turns out we worked together but didn't know it. In late 1979 Bruce Baker hired me to do overnight news on KONO. Billy was also there at the time. That was about the time I became booth announcer at KENS TV in San Antonio. I went full time at KENS a few months later, so I dropped the radio job. I knew Bill from his work at KTFM in the mid 1980s, back when that station OWNED San Antonio. We spoke again when he was at 96-FM, and then linked back up through JRRR. Thanks for that. Bob Crowley

TRIVIA ANSWER: Country group Little Texas gets their name from a small community in Williamson County, TN by that same name.

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX)
Subject: FM Atlas. Hi, Here is the e-mail address for FM Atlas and FM Media:
fmedianews@gmail.com. Another source/resource for those interested in broadcasting, especially FM. Thanks to his FM Atlas, I was able to ID CBC FM Toronto that sent me a beautiful QSL.I also ID'd and obtained a QSL from 3WS in Philadelphia. I like FM DXing but it is becoming harder to do with all the move-ins and also with the streaming over the web less stations are interested in DX reports. Easter has always proved a good time to pull in DX on FM. Charles, KC5RAI

CHARLES ATLAS (October 30, 1893-December 24, 1972) Are you tired of sand being kicked in your face? I promise you new muscles in days!
