CELEBRATE FLAG DAY ON SUNDAY, JUNE 14, 2009! FLY OLE GLORY!
ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
NEW DALLAS COWBOYS FOOTBALL STADIUM
For the upcoming 2009 NFL season the Dallas Cowboys vacate their famous hole in the roof Texas stadium in Irving, TX for a colossal world-beater new $1.1 billion retractable-roof arena in Arlington, TX. For that kind of money they should send limos to our homes to take us football fans to the showplace. To kick things off in typical Cowboys fashion George Strait, Reba McEntire and Blake Shelton perform the first concert at the new Cowboys Stadium on Saturday, June 6, 2009. The gorgeous Lee Ann Womack fills in for Julianne Hough who takes sick leave with laryngitis. What a fine show this is! George Strait leads with his new single Living for the Night from his upcoming album Twang which hits our favorite record stores in fall 2009. George Strait's next concert along with Blake Shelton and Julianne Hough is Friday, June 12 in Virginia Beach, VA. Be there! Be there!

Remember, Stanford goes through an $8 billion fraud investigation of its Texas financier Allen Stanford. The PGA releases a statement: While this is a reduction from the previously announced $6.1 million purse, we are pleased that, despite the absence of a title sponsor, the tournament will be staged thanks to the Memphis community partners. DERRELL HOLLY (Arlington, VA) I’ve been enjoying your Terrestrial Radio series. You raise some interesting points, particularly for those of us who started in the business when the A-M band was still the place to be. It’s hard to believe that radio as we remember it lasted only a generation. We all owe so much gratitude the local impresarios who gave us our first breaks on local A-M stations more than 40 years ago. We all know talented programmers who believed quality control and standards would "make the business better" in the 70s and 80s. But those are the same guys who got run out of corporate broadcasting or threw up their hands and left over "one size fits all" programming. Fact is Jim, I don’t see how anyone could ever service the debt on some of these group-owned stations today if they ever decided to take it all back to local programming and local marketing. Sadly, the limited number of shifts still filled with local voices don’t offer much of a proving ground for developing talent to fill out a 24-7 air schedule. The industry has been downsized, outsourced and automated into near doom. Singer Tammy Wynette never stopped renewing her beautician’s license because she wanted to have something to fall back on. For all of us old broadcasters that’s a lesson that makes a lot of sense. Derrill E. Holly Arlington, VA

LYNN WOOLLEY (Temple, TX) Subject: KLIF & Bruce Hughes. Jim, Was glad to see you mention Bruce Hughes in a recent column. You noted that Bruce is deceased; I never knew what became of him. Bruce's heyday was at KLIF, but John C. Butler hired him as news director when I was at KRLD -- around 1976 or so. Bruce's contemporary news style was a shock to some of the old guard at KRLD. It took me a while to get used to it as well. But Bruce and I generally got along, and when I won an AP award, Bruce hand-wrote on it: "Lynn, ALL your work at KRLD is award-winning to me." He framed the letter for me, and it still hangs at my house. I have fond memories of Bruce. Lynn (www.BeLogical.com)
GARY DELAUNE (San Antonio, TX) Subject: KLIF & Lee Harvey Oswald. The fund for Mrs. Tippitt was well over a hundred thousand...that was big money in those days. Someone also started a fund for Marina. I think she got well over $60,000. When she re-married Kenneth Jess Porter...in Fate, Texas, I chased them all over North Texas that night. She met him when he had ridden up on horse back to a party. I ran into her months later at Medallion. She was buying a recliner for Jess...when she saw me, she took off. But when I was at KRLD-TV, Barker wanted me to go to Gainesville to interview her and Porter. I got to her house before he got off work. She invited me in. I sat and visited with her and held Lee Harvey's kids on my lap and gave them all the change I had in my pocket. When Porter arrived, he was upset that I was in the house and said..."get out...now". I tried to reason with him but we left without the interview. Marina had agreed to talk with me on camera but he said...No. So, we didn't get the interview. And then there is the story of Lee Harvey's diary that Hugh Aynesworth managed to get his hands on. I asked him if he had his hands on Marina in order to get it...she had a pretty good reputation as being rather...well... Let's put it this way, I never found out. One of Jack's strippers, Penny Dollar, was my upstairs neighbor on Live Oak. I can't remember her real name...but she was a knock-out in a bikini. She asked me for an autographed picture since she listened to KLIF all the time. So I gave her one and she framed it and put it on her coffee table. Yes..Dallas was a big city but really a small town in those days. GD (www.garydnews.com)
BILLY THORMAN (Ft. Worth, TX) As I remember, 106.1 was KTUF, smooth Jazz owned by Steve Atkin's owner of Atkin's Advertising agency in San Antonio. The call letters later changed to KESI. Later the signal moved to 106.7 and then KMMX. I know that because one of my goals was to take away their #1 25-54 status. We did so in three months. I know you miss Tejas and always will. Have you thought about getting a new pup? Do we need to take up a puppy fund? b
TRIVIA ANSWER: Simon & Garfunkel's 5th and final record album Bridge Over Troubled Water releases on January 26, 1970. It contains 3 other hits in addition to the title track: The Boxer, Cecilia and El Condor Pasa. The album is #1 both in the USA and Australia.
ANDY CARR (San Antonio, TX) Jim, it was good to see an email from George Lester. George had to be the craziest guy on radio in San Antonio. I listened to him every chance I got. As a country jock the music I listened to was rock, back when it made sense. I am always happy to hear from people. My email address is Imashrink@satx.rr.com. Andy Carr
GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX) Everything went great last night when I did the preshow at the Texas Opry in Crockett. I did a half hour leading up to show time at 7:00 PM. I did all upbeat songs. The audience seemed to really come alive for the session. It was an absolute blast for me. The show producer said I "did a great job". I might get the gig. I'll just have to wait and see for now.
LES BROWN (1945-p) Shoot for the moon. If you miss, you'll land among the stars.
