VENTURES FOUNDER EXPIRES
One of the co-founders of the legendary guitar-theme Rock band The Ventures passes away at 75. In 1959, Bob Bogle puts together The Ventures with Don Wilson when they are bricklayers. Probably two of their most famous hit tunes are Walk - Don't Run and The Theme From Hawaii Five-O. When I have wrist surgery in 1960 a high school friend brings a copy of The Ventures hit tune Walk - Don't Run. So that tune holds a special significance to me. The Ventures record many record albums. Most of them are in my LP collection. Don Wilson says that Bob suffers from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and he dies on Sunday, June 14, 2009 in a local Vancouver, WA hospital. Don remembers, I never had a brother, but he's the brother I never had...he was much more than a brother to me. He was one of the kindest men I ever met. The original members of The Ventures are: Bogle - lead guitar, Wilson - rhythm guitar, Nokie Edwards - bass and Skip Moore - drums. Howie Johnson later replaces Skip on drums. The Ventures big guitar sound first hits Billboard's singles chart in 1960 with Walk - Don’t Run which zooms to #2 nationally. John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival inducts The Ventures into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008: That song started a whole new movement in rock 'n' roll. The sound of it became 'surf music' and the audacity of it empowered guitarists everywhere. Don Wilson says Any guitar player would tell you, Bob is the most unique-sounding guitar player ever. The way he used to do the whammy bar - that vibrato bar. He kept his little finger on it while he played it all the time. He'd make it sound, like at the end of a chord, Wow-wow. We were the first ones to ever get recognized for doing anything like that. When you heard him play, you knew it was him. Bob Bogle leaves behind his wife, Yumi; children, Gary, Mike, Paul, Kathy, Randy and Brandon; brothers, Clarence, Dennis and Curtis; sister, Sybil; grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A private funeral is on Friday, June 19th.

TRIVIA QUESTION:
What is the first double record album? The answer appears below.

CMT MUSIC AWARDS
Country comedian Bill Engvall hosts the CMT Music Awards on Tuesday night, June 16, 2009. The big winner of the evening is Brad Paisley who walks away with a field-leading three trophies. Taylor Swift receives the female video prize with her Love Story. Trey Fanjoy who is her video director wins Director of the Year. Taylor also wins the overall best video prize, also for Love Story. As I watch the event it's mighty difficult to determine which are real Country tunes or is it a Rock'n'Roll revue with flashy lights, shiny outfits and big dance show routines?

CHUCK CASHMERE (San Diego, CA) Hey Jim, has anyone heard from Al Sharpton on the Letterman/Palin controversy? I mean he led the charge to get Imus fired for a similar joke about that female basketball team...oh my goodness I forgot Palin is only half native American/Caucasian and I guess Letterman's defenders overlook that it was her 14 yr old daughter who was at the game with Sarah. Letterman should at least suffer the punishment of eating moose meat raw.

SUKOSHI RICE (Blairsville, GA) Hi Jim/James, Are you the same James Rose who was Miles' r.m.? If you tell me that, I will tell you my story about that James Rose. Thanks for your emails, Sukoshi Rice; Master Usui Reiki; Licensed Massage Therapist; Relax & Breathe Wellness Center; Blairsville, GA. The Lord respects me when I work, but He loves me when I sing. -R.Tagore

ANDY CARR (San Antonio, TX)
George, Thanks for responding to my comments in Jim Rose's paper. It is so good to hear from you. I also remember and liked "Howard Eddards," as he sometimes referred to himself jokingly, but my tribute is only to you, so take a bow and accept the accolades: You were a pure radio personality. You entertained and I admired you for that. Unlike some of the trash talking morning jocks of today you carried your large audience because they liked and respected you, the funny and crazy things you said and did, and the music you played. I have also felt like a forgotten entity at times although I was the only jock in San Antonio playing country music at night on KMAC for many years starting in 1965. If anyone listened to country music at night (and would admit it) in San Antonio they had to be listening to me. My former listeners hardly ever acknowledge the KMAC years and only seem to remember when I worked at KBER and KBUC. It is great when someone acknowledges that they remember us. I worked weekends at KKYX when I was attending graduate school at OLLU back in 1989-1990: A female listener called and said she had been listening to me since she was fifteen. When I ask her current age she said "forty five." It only takes one of them every once in a while to make it all mean something. George I've been listening to you since I was in my twenties. Thanks for those years of good performance. I don't think I ever met you but I felt like I knew you. That was the magic of good radio work. Oops sorry, I didn't mean to say "Magic." Best Regards, Andy Carr, A devoted listener.

GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX) Subject: Thanks. Hi Andy, Your kind words in Jim Rose's column were greatly appreciated by this old man. Howard Edwards on KONO and I on KTSA combined carried over 70% of the morning drive audience for many years in San Antonio. Of course, that was when the ratings system was structured much different than now but very few two morning jocks had numbers like that even in those days. When I read about all the great radio people of the past I seem to be a forgotten entity, almost as if I never existed. It is gratifying to see that someone remembers me. Thanks, George Lester
