ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

LEGENDARY TV ANCHOR VERY ILL
Reports come in that long-time CBS News anchor whom we know as the most trusted man in America is gravely ill. Details are sketchy on the current health of 92 year old Walter Cronkite. But according to Newsday rumors that Cronkite is ill surface a few weeks ago when CBS begins to make phone calls to some of Walter's colleagues to give their reflections on his life. CBS asserts at the time that there is some miscommunication and that Cronkite was fine. Beginning in 1962, Cronkite anchors the CBS Evening News and remains for 19 years. He reports the Kennedy assassination in November, 1963; Vietnam War; the landing of the first man on the moon in July, 1969 and the Watergate cover up long before around-the-clock cable TV news appears on the scene. In March 1981, Walter retires from his anchor chair. Dan Rather becomes the new CBS News anchor. The St. Joseph, MO native begins his long career on the WWII battlefield as a UPI correspondent. In 1950, he joins CBS Radio as a Washington correspondent. In 1962, he becomes anchor of the then 15-minute CBS Evening News. In 1963, the CBS Evening News expands to 30 minutes.

COWBOY GETS THE BIRD
Since 2003, Hall of Fame Dallas Cowboys QB Troy Aikman is the spokesman for Wingstop restaurant. Its base is in Richardson, TX. Andy Howard, EVP of marketing for Wingstop, signs Troy as their national mouthpiece to a new three-year extension contract. The bistro brags that it has 23 consecutive quarters of same-store sale increases since Aikman signs on as national spokesman. Wingstop also adds 420 restaurants across the USA. In a statement to the press Andy says, We are excited to continue our partnership with Troy. It’s rare to find a spokesperson that fits so perfectly with a brand, even after a nine-year relationship, but Troy’s enthusiasm for our brand and wings, as well as his stature in the sports industry, make him the ideal spokesman for Wingstop.

TRIVIA QUESTION:
What title does David Letterman's high school classmates bestow upon him? The answer appears below.

GARY ALLYN (San Diego-Fallbrook, CA) Jim, you trivia buff you...I believe it was Glenn Ford who was the school teacher in Blackboard Jungle. I, too, am a big Fats Domino fan. I once got fired for playing the flip side of a Fats two sided hit. We only listed one side for air play, but I mistakenly cued up wrong side. Fired for "Gross Insubordination" It was new ownership of an AFTRA union station, so they were looking for ways to get rid of the old staff. Loved Gene Vincent & The Blue Caps. I also remember my first DJ gig doing an all night show from a Supermarket window in the Dayton, Ohio suburbs; I was 17 at the time. I remember various motorcycle gangs & others coming in requesting ELVIS PRESLEY! I thought it was such a strange sounding name. Needless to say I immediately asked the station for a copy of Heartbreak Hotel. Like you, I was never a big Paul Anka fan. Annette is still holding on I hear. Very bad shape. Brando was peculiar. His early movies were not bad. Later on, he was only in it for the money. Gotta admit, his Godfather role was pretty special. Memories...to be continued. Gare Allyn

ROB RICHIE (Madison, WI) I am so grateful to you and all your followers who jumped in to help. That is the real Texas spirit that I grew up with and miss so very much. Again, I am very, very appreciative of this, and thank you from the bottom of my heart. If I can ever do anything for you, please let me know. I will continue to receive your postings, and will read them more carefully now. My best to you. Rob Richie

HAROLD GUNN (Houston, TX)
Dear Jim, Congratulations on again being nominated for the Texas Radio Hall of Fame. I hope all of the voting members that subscribe to "Jim Rose Remembers" cast their vote for you. I'd be thrilled to be runner up. Harold

TEXAS RADIO HALL OF FAME nominations come in for me in 2004, 2005, 2006 and another this year 2009 for behind the mic on TX top radio stations since 1965: KHFI FM, WFAA-820/570, KBOX-1480, KLIF-1190, KNUZ-1230, KULF-790, KILT FM, and KILT-610. But Captain Harold definitely deserves to be the next inductee in the 2009 TRHOF. We fans cannot wait for the return of Captain Harold to the Houston TV movie host screen.

WALTER HAMMOCK (Houston, TX)
The liberties of a people never were, nor ever will be, secure, when the transactions of their rulers may be concealed from them. Patrick Henry

GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX) Subject: Charlie Walker. Penny and I have enjoyed watching "Grand Old Opry Reunion" on RFD-TV and several times I noticed Charlie Walker sitting there in background. It brought me back to when he was a DJ on KMAC in San Antonio while I worked at KTSA. Several times we ran into each other at Willow Springs golf course. It got to be a pretty regular thing and we would plan our get togethers at the golf course. We just seemed to sort of hit it off. A few years later he recorded "Don't Squeeze My Sharmon". That was the end of our golf games. His career was rejuvenated in a big way and he took off for Nashville and the Grand Old Opry. It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy but golf wasn't near as much fun after that. It was with heavy heart that I heard of his passing last fall. It's been over 40 years but I can still clearly see his smiling face and hear his laughter out there on the golf course. He will be missed.

SUMMER 1967 as the noon-3 pm DJ on KPCN-730 in my hometown Dallas, TX is where I play Charlie Walker's hot new hit tune Don't Squeeze My Sharmon. Sounds great in Power rotation right out of the news. KPCN is such a wonderful radio station with a fine staff full of talent. Real radio. Miss it very much.

TRIVIA ANSWER: High school students in Broad Ripple, IN vote fellow classmate David Letterman the Class Smart Alec.

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX)
Hi, From the summer of 1960, between the 1st and second grades, until I started the 7th grade I played the violin. I never did get very far. I preferred to play recordings by others than practice. The violin takes more practice than the other instruments I have tried to play. Anyway, Friday I bought a violin I found at a pawn shop at the corner of Buckner and I-30. I realized that it would not be an easy task to learn to play; however; I have already learned to play a few scales and the tune My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean. It helps keeping my mandolin near by since it is tuned the same as the violin but has frets making it easier to play, but you can't bow a mandolin... I like making home grown music I think the consolidation of the media is bad for performers, etc. I will never be a super star but it is fun to talk with others about music and other topics. I have started cooking fish on my George Foreman Grill. I like to cook fish and then have some rice on the side. Charles

JOAN of ARC (1412-1431) I am not afraid... I was born to do this.
